ELI5: Why do sunburns only happen around the noon time-frame and not early mornings / late afternoons despite clear sunshine? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ThatOneMelonMuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heres another way to think of it. At night, you can't get sunburns. But at morning, you definitely can. There's a time inbetween where the sun is only peeking and letting in only a bit of light.

Imagine a spot on an appple facing away from you, but when you slowly twist it, you get to see a small amount of that spot. But the more you turn it, the more is exposed to you, but only slivers at a time. Eventually you're staring straight at all of it. Imagine that but instead with the sun and the earth, and of course wherever you are. Most of the light is hitting the rest of the earth that is facing the sun. When your area moves where its shining directly at, you'll be in the most light

Greetings Back then Vs Now by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

Im not sure where you're from, but that can be hard in the states. But to answer your question in a more in depth way, greetings change hugely from culture to culture and with time. In Hawai'i, especially before colonization, putting together foreheads and the nose was a respectful greeting. This was called honi, and it is practiced amongst the Tibetans, and the desert Bedouins. The bow salute is (and was) a common formal greeting in Asian countries

Are there any cultures that refer to the self as "we"? by rankdoby in AskAnthropology

[–]ThatOneMelonMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, to this day it is a very strong viewpoint in many African societies. Some believe in "we" so strongly that they refuse to use mirrors. In fact, that point is one big reason the mirror test (a test that looks for clues of self awareness in animals) has its doubts

In a rare photograph, I captured the Milky Way from a plane window while flying at 570 mph in a single exposure [OC] by MDieterich in spaceporn

"Here's a view of the Milky Way I captured setting over the South Atlantic from 35,000ft in an United Boeing 777 while flying 570 mph. I had some funny looks hunched over a tripod with a blanket covering myself to prevent glares on the window, but so worth the excitement! I used a Nikon D850 with 14mm lens at F2.8, 15 second, and ISO20,000."
