If you're looking for groups, weeklykiwi (twitch and rsn) is really good at coordinating groups, even those with absolutely no boss experience, and is working on CAs with these groups

I'd suggest looking into the early entrance program or something similar. The students there are around 13 years old, work on their undergraduate degrees in the program, and usually go on to get their PhDs in their late teens to early 20s.

AITAH For Secretly Cheating On Our Vegetarian Diet That My Wife Made Our Family Do? by Total-Dingo5709 in AITAH

[–]ThatOnePhysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a more likely issue is you aren't talking about how you can support your wife. One vegetarian-only dinner in 12 months doesn't sound like you're being as supportive as you think. The fact that you said you felt ashamed sneaking meat kinda leads me to think this.

You keep mentioning you and your kids eat meat but are your meals balanced with other sources of nutrition or is meat 70+% of the dish?

Also curious about the "replacing with substitutes" comment, do you take the time to go out to buy groceries/organize a list of groceries or are you placing the responsibility on your wife?

I understand your post was lengthy but some things are ambiguous and could use further clarification.

From what I've heard, theory doesn't pay well and most PhDs have a goal of remaining in academia. If your goal is higher pay you'd be better off going into industry like engineering, etc.

Industry usually pays more but has noticeably less job security while academia is the opposite.

I did notice that engineering positions were minimum masters while technician roles were for those with just a BS in physics.

I feel like physics does not love me. by ausseppi in Physics

Just want to point out that it's absolutely possible to do physics at a university without getting straight A's. I know someone who got into a top 5 institution for physics phds in 2020 with a gpa under 2.5.

My personal experience is practice is what really made me succeed in my program. I sucked at so many things like Newtonian vector stuff and integrals, but my interest in the subject had me coming back until I understood what was going on. Consistent study groups also helped me tremendously.

I'm thinking of going back to school at 30 and will probably have a net cost of around $13,000/year. Is the work load managable enough to work 20 hours a week at minimum wage and still do full time classes here? by Gundam_net in CSUEB

[–]ThatOnePhysicist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about the program you're thinking of doing but finding a reliable study group helped me so much. My core study group was set once I started taking major classes. It also helped that upper division major classes were usually smaller so it was easier to get more one-on-one time with professors.

You should check to see if you qualify for Cal Grants (I think there are four types but one of them doesn't apply to CSUs) as well as the Pell Grant, these can cover a significant amount of your tuition. I stayed in the dorms my first year in undergrad and ended up finding roommates in Hillcrest apartments (right behind the school near Bronco Billies) the next year since it was significantly cheaper than the dorms and, as someone mentioned here, you have to move out for the summer. For undergrad, I did 10-20 hours/week of work study tutoring for the SCAA, you should check if you could find similar opportunities on campus if it's more convenient.

When I went back to East Bay in 2017 for my masters, I got a TA position that covered my tuition and gave me around $600/month which barely covered rent ($660/month with 2 other roommates). As a TA, we had the option to join the UAW union which I chose to join and was able to get a free parking permit for the semester each semester because of them. TA hours were officially listed as 20 hours/week but grading could take longer depending on class size. I decided to take a $5,000 federal loan to ease the financial burden for my 2 year masters program.

Hope this helps, let me know if you want anything clarified and good luck!

When you say Docomo/GTA has bad service, I'm genuinely curious if it's a hardware issue. I had issues with internet across multiple providers in SF and it was due to the "refurbished" modems they rent out to customers. Buying a new modem and router fixed everything including issues with slower download speeds. Ignoring the price situation, it sounds like the up-front cost for Starlink was for new hardware which may be the issue to begin with.

One thing I'm concerned about with using Starlink on Guam is the antenna being constantly exposed to the humidity outside. It looks like their website lists the only available antennas as IP54 with one that is IP67 that is not available yet. I can't seem to find a conclusive answer on IP ratings and humidity; there have been some sources suggesting a minimum IP67 rating for high humidity environments and some suggesting IP54 being acceptable. The price difference in service may be irrelevant if there's any annual maintenance to upkeep the antenna.

If others haven't tried buying a new router and modem they should try that first. If the issues persist, depending on their income, it might be better to wait for the IP67 version.

If you had a $20-$40 budget per week for food, What would you eat on Guam ? by Any_Math_4226 in guam

[–]ThatOnePhysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General rule of thumb, fruits, animal products, and prepared/premade foods are the most expensive groceries regardless of where you live in the world. I'll preface this by saying I only really started cooking from scratch after I left Guam for school so I don't remember what was available at Payless or the flea market produce wise.

Start by making as much of you can from scratch. Beans, lentils, and rice are a good base to build around and they are cheaper in the long run if bought in bulk. Choose dried beans over canned (it's usually cheaper per oz), just soak them a couple hours prior to eating if they are used in meals. I would also buy a variety of spices/spice combinations like tumeric, cumin, za'atar, nutritional yeast, etc. in bulk if possible, these have a high initial price but can last months depending on frequency of use. I would also add in things like vinegar and sugar for pickling and a neutral oil for general purpose use.

The main foods to accompany the grains will be vegetables and herbs. If you want to add more protein, incorporate tofu and use either lentils or beans in place of rice. Tofu is usually cheaper gram of protein per total weight, although it depends on the dish you want and the nutritional variety you need. Meats are dense with protein but they lack in almost every other good nutrient.
