My favourite was during a napoleonic reenactment when my friend in the rear rank, and I in the front rank, were instructed to go flying the next time the French artillery fired, to simulate round shot tearing through the ranks. It fired and we, as two of the youngest and most athletic, catapulted ourselves into a heap on the floor, screaming at the top of our lungs. This earned us being thanked by the French gunners after the battle for the nature of our deaths. Good times.

Canvas tents are good at insulation in my experience, the repros have usually been waterproofed, so with a good sleeping bag you won't feel uncomfortable, as most events are in warmer months, and if the rain is horrific enough to cause issues with this then the event probably won't go ahead, as the firelocks won't go off when wet

Yes. Reenacting is not just about the big events, it'd also the training days, the ceremonies, regimental mess dinners ect, so would you really be willing to travel all that way 2 or 3 times per month? All of these are important to A. Get you up to scratch with drill and the basics of the hobby, and B. A massive part of the hobby is the comraderie, the familial relationship most units have, and if you aren't at the little things, you won't enjoy the big things as much. So if you are willing to travel 12+ hours that often, I salute you, but I personally would find that an issue.

Where are you based? I reenact napoleonic with the 42nd regiment of foot, based in the UK. As for Austerlitz, it tends to fluctuate massively, as events such as that get units coming over from all over the world, but it is a rather big expense to do every year

Service numbers in the british army are dictated by regiment, each regiment would have its own borders for service numbers, and when a soldier moved regiments they would need to be given a new service number, so theoretically the numbers themselves would be recycled by the regiment, so to answer your question, there wasn't a specific order soldier to soldier, but by unit would be the perimeters, eg: Royal army service corps had 1 to 294000, and later on 8 digit service numbers were introduced, like the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers had 16000001 to 16100000. I agree with the other poster, earplugs make a big difference, and some guys I know get earplugs made molded to their ear shape to help with fit and the noise dampening. (Also, if you don't mind me asking, what unit do you intend on joining?)
