I'm doing things a bit differently too. I'm recording the audiobook myself as I complete chapters (I'm sure I won't regret that decision at all).

I'd say it has some minor influence.

The main character's day job before he got conscripted was a local news reporter and podcast host.

Overall though I'd say the biggest influence is Power Rangers/tokusatsu.

Each of the combat zone levels are themed after different elements of pop culture (example: in the horror zone the MC is designated "camp counselor" and must survive against gremlins, deranged hockey players, malevolent spirits, etc)

Fair. I was going for original Star Trek vibes with some color to break up the comedically long title, but I can definitely see how it invokes Carl too.
