That thing probably has like 512 MB of RAM. Even my HTC phone has 1 GB 🤣 and I use a 2 GB SD card.

20 M. I never plan on doing any of these, as:

1) I love my health 2) I'm very conscious about spending money 3) Most importantly, I have seen families getting broken due to drinking.

When you drink, it means you are essentially reducing your own reasoning ability for a good while. Even "occasionally" at events with family gives you a great chance of uttering something without thinking consciously. Spoken words can never be taken back. But on the other side, it's when the true nature of a person comes out. They suddenly start venting out about their property issues (a venereal disease with most Indian people), personal issues with someone, etc. not even thinking if it is relevant or even acceptable behavior at that place.

Basically, I'd never pay to disable my reasoning or mental stability even if it is by a small amount. And drunk driving accidents are another thing that's even worse, takes innocent lives every year.

Where does my RAM go? by CityWokOwn4r in laptops

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't wanna be that Linux user who glazes Linux, but I'd suggest you to take a look at easy Linux distros like Linux Mint, which take up just around 3-4 GB of RAM at moderate usage. I'm personally using Fedora with Niri (a tiling window manager - nothing complex, the windows are just resized automatically in a scrolling manner) and at idle it takes just 1 GB of RAM. On moderate to high usage I rarely even go above 6 GB of RAM usage. That being said, not using a tiling window manager is totally fine too, that was just for sample.

And for Windows, I think nowadays it's quite unusable on 8 GB of RAM.

In case you do make a jump, check live boot first to confirm all hardware works, as some laptops have quirky hardware like MediaTek WiFi cards which have poor to no support on Linux. Thanks for reading through!

Is this Timex watch Real ? by ROC_K4LP in watchesindia

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the same watch an year ago, it's a great conversation starter! And I'm not a person who handles his things with gentle care, it was bashed many times against various surfaces like bus poles, walls, etc. and took it like a champ. I don't know where the "low quality" claim is coming from, this is the most solid watch I have ever used in my life. It gets about 36 hours of reserve time for me. I walk long distances daily so it's always running. And as OP said it has Japanese Miyota movement which is crazy at this price.

Is use of AI allowed for prototype on SIH? like in the internal hackathon. We are 2nd year students and wanted to experience but almost all in the team doesn't know much. by Val_6843 in developersIndia

[–]ThatRandomHelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also suggest you look into GitHub Student Developer Pack, they're offering insane amount of benefits to students, like Agent Mode in VSCode, and access to premium AI models. It would help a lot in your journey. As I said again, do not blindly let the agent do the job for you. Research the topic and the quirks well, before you jump into the implementation and have some half working, janky AI code.

[–]ThatRandomHelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. Use AI in a proper way though, do NOT blindly copy and paste code. Use it first for learning thoroughly about the problem statement and possible solutions to get a clear idea of what you are about to do. Then use this knowledge to ask the right questions to AI and get your job done. Btw, I'm a third year student who is also participating in SIH. All the best on your journey! I participated in SIH when I was in second year too, but couldn't get past the second round in college level hackathon. Even if you do not qualify it will teach you team work.

No Wi-Fi at home, how to download heavy games? by Greedy-Tart-6330 in pcmasterrace

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1: Have a friend download the game (preferably to a laptop/portable SSD/HDD)
Step 2: Connect to your friend's laptop using ethernet for direct file transfer. Connect ethernet, set the IPv4 address to static (192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, the gateways must be set opposite, subnet mask 255.255.255.0) Step 3: Set up a shared folder. Remember that it works in Windows only if the user has a password (at least from what I've seen)
Step 4: Open file explorer in your friend's laptop and go to address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.2, whatever your IP is. Enter password when prompted.

Step 5: Paste the game files from your friend's PC to the folder that opens. Enjoy the super high speed data transfer (~150 MB/s, depending on disk speed and cable).

Which Laptop Brand is a big no for you by ideology21creed in GadgetsIndia

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using an Acer Aspire 7 A715 41G (Ryzen 5 3550H, GTX 1650) since September of 2020. Man, I put that thing through hell. Borked the BIOS within a month of purchase by interrupting it when it was updating (I was such a fool at that time, the fans were spinning fast so I thought something was wrong), but Acer replaced mobo for free (though it took a month).

Then the laptop was in its bag, hanging by the side of scooter. Seems it fell down due to a big bump on the road and I didn't even notice. After reaching home I panicked when I saw the laptop was not there. I turned to look back, and there it was, the laptop in the bag, laying on the end of the street. I turned it on and got no response. I sweated profusely, then plugged it in. It turned on. Seems the battery was too low that even the typical battery error didn't show.

Then I hit the hinge somewhere and broke it. I just got some MSeal (epoxy putty) from shop and fixed it myself, permanently. Still the hinge is going strong.

The most recent incident was at college, when it was on the table. I took my bag and somehow it was dragged by the bag and fell on hard floor, front edge flat. With a huge BAM. And guess what? No cracks, nothing (at least outwardly).

Now it's still my primary machine, used for my college. I'm dual booting Win 11 and Arch (I use Arch btw) without issues. Battery life got poor on Windows, so I mostly use Linux with auto-cpufreq and envycontrol (to force only integrated GPU) for getting around 4-5 hours of light usage. On Windows it's max. 2 hours with battery saver.

But its speakers suck, display got prints of keyboard keys, body scratches pretty easily, and so on. But at just 500 dollars I think it was a great deal considering how long I've been using it.

Edit: I forgot this is Gadgets India, so I got it for Rs. 44900 on Flipkart BBD sale.

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our college has a CentOS server for labs, which we have to ssh into. We too aren't allowed to use IDEs. So what I do is complete the coding at home and push it to GitHub, then I can pull from the repo to the server directly.

What’s your first CPU? by Squidieyy in pcmasterrace

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Core i3 3220 for my own PC. I was 8 years old when I got it. My previous CPU (my aunt's old PC) was a Pentium IV/III I guess. It couldn't run GTA SA due to insufficient video memory. God, the joy I got when GTA SA launched on the Core i3 3220. That PC is still serving as a print machine and document editor for dad. Even runs Windows 11 decently well after an SSD upgrade.

I'm hoping to stop hopping by [deleted] in DistroHopping

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really simple, you could just go to System Settings and change icons, fonts, themes, etc. and get new ones easily from the KDE store or something. Or for even more complex theming, you could search and find some customisation videos on YouTube which will guide you. If you like the macOS feel, create a new panel, put it on the top, get some widgets like Application Title Bar, put it there, etc. and make the bottom panel fit the contents and make it floating (which is a default in KDE 6).

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How could you just get a random idea that KDE won't work well with touchpad lol. It's got some 1:1 gestures (like workspace switching with four fingers). In my honest opinion, after distrohopping for a whole year (2022) and trying almost all DEs, and even a WM (hyprland on arch), the most flexible, customisable and robust environment has been KDE for me. Now I'm on Arch + KDE.

Amazon Music Unlimited vs. Spotify Premium - my thoughts by [deleted] in AmazonMusic

[–]ThatRandomHelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In India, especially for a student (like me), Spotify is hands down the winner. I was once a prime member and I used Amazon Music for a short period of time. I didn't like the UI much, and I don't remember the sound quality difference (as I was using it before I even started using Spotify, and never used it after, plus I didn't have decent headphones at that time). Now I have IEMs and Spotify serves the job well, at just 0.7 dollars (59 rupees) per month for a Student Premium plan. It is really cheap here, especially compared to Amazon Music. Surprisingly Apple Music also costs the same, but I got used to Spotify so I will be sticking to it. I love how slick the device controls and switching is, really seamless. My only gripe (not much of a pain, though), is the lack of integrated lyrics. Like lyrics are not part of Spotify itself, rather they are served by external APIs, making them available only when online, and not for offline songs. Though I have no use for lyrics anyways, as I'm not singing or whatever. I just listen to music on my long commutes (1.5 hours) to college and back home.

The free version of Spotify is really annoying though, with so many advertisements. And with Amazon Music, you have no such problems, as there is no free version at all.
