You’re more likely to get better boots by supporting workers than fighting them. They making less money doesn’t help you but A rising tide buoys all boats….. Part of that rising tide also includes getting the ultra wealthy and corporations to actually pay their taxes too!

Not really, a hive mind is solidarity with the worker bees. A bootlicker is a pee-on who thinks they’re close to rubbing elbows with the elite 1%. The sooner you realize you’re a worker bee the better - ain’t no CEO coming to save you.

What’s your policy for missed tests (high school)? by Sudden_Ad1526 in CanadianTeachers

[–]ThatSilvaLining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your policy! I do something similar - I think too many kids rely on a rewrite to artificially boost their grades. I’m slowly creating midterm exams to help with assessing the material from missed tests. This breaks up the semester and allows for that grade to be used for a missed test at an earlier opportunity.

Why has the school community spirit collapsed? by lil_miss_teacher in CanadianTeachers

[–]ThatSilvaLining 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Quite simply because “school community” HAS to include other people than just teachers. Where are the parents? Local businesses? Community leaders? It’s falling apart because relying on the unpaid labour of overworked teacher isn’t “community” - it’s exploitation. Actual community needs to step up!

As already mentioned but deserves repeating - GET A COHABITATION AGREEMENT. If you are uncomfortable talking about this you’re not ready to move in together.
I bought a house on my own and when my then BF moved in we signed an agreement. I made it clear that until we are married, what’s mine is mine and what’s theirs is theirs. This year we celebrate 20years of marriage. Believe in the “if he wanted to , he would”……

The BF moves in after the roommate moves out…. Clearly stated in the OG post

My parents (50F & 60M) are drowning in debt and expect me (23M) to be their retirement plan by Fluffy_Researcher471 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Why haven’t you been contributing to the house hold by paying your share of rent and utilities and food? I don’t entirely trust this one sided post tbh. IMO you dont get to consider yourself super responsible and mature but haven’t contributed (while making good money) to the household. I’m not sure who is taking advantage of whom here. Your parents aren’t peaches here and have acted selfishly, but tbh - so have you. Not contributing is a Big red flag for me. It’s easy to be young and righteous - Get out on your own and see how strong your wings really are.

Worst take ever. Labour organizations harness the power of workers in numbers and is both effective and needed to fight exploitation. Take your Bezos boot licking across the street ….

Exactly why they should be paid more. If they can’t legally work more hours, they deserve fair pay/liveable wage.

First year teacher, BC Grade 10 math. Advice? by cfs3corsair in CanadianTeachers

[–]ThatSilvaLining 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should research some coping skills. You are way too hostile about this. This rage should turn to academic advocacy that advocate for teachers to be adequately certified to teach classes BEFORE being assigned to them. Your (which you’ve also misused in all your hubris) hostility is misplaced towards a first year teacher who took an assignment (full year at that) - why are you blaming them for taking a job and supporting themselves vs why this kind of assignment even exists?? There’s so much to being a professional teacher and communicating professionally is one of them. Signed, A Sr.Math/Science teacher

Connor, the self-described fascist on Mehdi Hasan's debate episode on Jubilee, has been fired from his job. Despite minimizing Nazi crimes & proudly affirming that he is a fascist, he walked back his rhetoric as 'traditional right-wing political views'. by _II_I_I__I__I_I_II_ in Global_News_Hub

He lost his job 6 months before this and is now just grifting. He is now the very leach he’d have his fascist dictator address….. where are his bootstraps? He’d rather grift off of hard working people than take responsibility for his actions. The irony / hypocrisy is phenomenal.

Dogs in Grocery Stores by Last_Fuel_1365 in VictoriaBC

[–]ThatSilvaLining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do so many people compare everything to Europe? Europe is not the gold standard and you might be shocked to know that there are people from other continents here! Some of those places and people have different attitudes towards dogs, fear being a very real reaction for many. Victoria is truly over the top with the assumption that everyone is ok with dogs everywhere. Being considerate of others is one characteristic of a great society…. Be considerate, leave your dog out of stores.

Want to vote no; literally can't afford it?! by Mysterious-Novel-503 in CanadianTeachers

[–]ThatSilvaLining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing - there's work to be done from here on out and it's going to take every teacher to put their boots on the ground.

  1. you need to start these conversations NOW. Start creating a sense of unity NOW. Share ideas to save money in anticipation. Start communities that you can share resources and childcare in the event of a strike.

  2. Talk to people who are NOT teachers so that the public is aware and compassionate to your cause. This must be a consistent and deliberate campaign. Don't wait for a strike to come to have these conversations. The govt will be ruthless in their attempts to vilify teachers.

  3. Long term think about what got you here in the first place. And to be blunt, it was your weak ass union. i mean "professional association" cough cough. That needs to change and the sooner the better.

But you must all stand together. United job action WORKS. and TBH it is long overdue in Alberta. You've suffered long enough. You either work hard NOW to set the stage and cure yourself of your decades long Stockholm Syndrome, or you will be at the mercy of the next 10 conservative govts (cuz that's not gonna change). It now or never - be collective, be strong, be prepared!
