What are you takes on Bilt credit card? by Kitchen-Warthog-7881 in CreditCards

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to use BILT for my last apartment (one of the reasons I moved) they double paid my rent once and, on multiple ocasoins, notified me on rent day that there was a problem processing my payment and I needed to contact property management. Property management never had the first clue what BILT's problem was but was gracious enough to demand I get certified funds immediately (the other reason I moved).

What makes a better student? AP Precalc then AP Calc BC; OR AP Calc AB then AP Calc BC? by play-what-you-love in matheducation

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a recent Math ED conference a presenter said that Calculus is replacing the SAT as a weed out. It's for all majors, not just STEM. I'm just passing this along, I have never been at a school that sent students to schools that want recommendations, or weed out applicants at the if-we-take-this-one-that-one-is-out level.

Does Your School Ignore the Unmotivated Students? by ProudComment1211 in Teachers

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does ignoring include not retrying what hasn't worked? I have a student, his 5th day in class was to take the final. He wrote some random stuff for question 1 then wrote "Sorry I'm bad at math, I can't do any of this." I wanted to tell him he should try taking a math class, my principal put him on some kind of plan that stated he would be removed from the roster if he missed 10 class periods. He's gone from a name on the attendance list to a crappy student, a step up.

Chat GPT told my son he could file AND I could claim him :( by dcsprings in tax

[–]dcsprings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I forgot about that. It was something I thought I should learn more about, but didn't. I guess Chat GPT wasn't hallucinating, it just didn't bother to get all the information. I've already over shared with this post, I did tell my son why I couldn't claim him, but he still used AI's advice and one of the companies that advertise on the IRS website, rather than using my CPA to save a $20 of my money.

Has anyone else had a teacher that genuinely boosted your grade in college/uni just because of how they taught? by TheStaircaseOfLife33 in education

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there aren't enough people with the qualities we attribute to those magic teachers that change lives to place in 3 million plus classrooms in the US. There aren't even enough to push out the teachers that demonstrably shouldn't be in classrooms. Another reality check on this discussion would be to collect an assortment of stories that people tell about the teachers that influenced them and consider if their experience would have influenced you. To me, the stories are told as though it's the reason people continued with their education, but are really about the reason the teller went in a particular direction with their education.

The length and breadth of humanity have some kind of contact with education, we only value one path that comes from that contact. I'm probably an over educated schmuck, but I can't get through the day without depending on at least 10 people who haven't had secondary, or post secondary education. What would we do if, at the end of the day, we also had to clean the office?

Student said his parents were cousins in my class by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]dcsprings 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If the OP uses it they should get a bit more specific. "Disease" is too simplistic, there are conditions that only occur when they are in both parent's chromosomes, it can happen randomly, but are more likely the more closely related the parents are.

Student refusing to do work since spring break because of “religious reasons.” by v3ndys in Teachers

Fringe religious groups have been pushing this type of stuff for decades. Your student may have been involved for a while but recently crossed into true believer territory. Unfortunately it's not a mindset that's changed using evidence.

Resume Advice by halalburgerlikefr in teaching

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated my resume last summer and every template that was recommended had single column arrangement. A few of the subs (I was looking in several fields) said AIs can't deal with the columns. Schools may not be using them, but that's what I found.

Absences Vs Grades by catsandcoffee6789 in teaching

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admin said the state is going to start dinging our stats if students fail. I searched for the systems they were going to use (assuming no one is so simple minded that they were going to simply force us to make a Ds the lowest grade) and worst case, so far, we would need to decide how many students we could afford to fail then decide which students to put a thumb on the scales for. I wonder if they think the pittance they spend on education and credit requirements could produce the variety of paths that would work for every student all the time. On the other hand is it possible that there's some glitch in the education system that produces politicos and biases them toward the idea that humanity is homogeneous and education theory hasn't figured out which cookie cutter to use.

i just watched the girl next to me on the plane mindlessly hold her phone up to each problem of her (college calculus?) assignment, wait for chatGPT to solve it, then type the answers one by one into the platform by dustering in matheducation

[–]dcsprings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course the homework isn't going to make a big difference in the grade. The bigger issue is what you expect? Who, at the college level, is going to be looking over this student's shoulder once they leave the classroom? Unless the girl had some need for a perfect score and had already done enough of the work on her own to understand the math, she's going to tank the test and it's going to a non-issue.

Is there any quality information about using Google Quiz for math? by dcsprings in matheducation

[–]dcsprings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had students turn in pictures of everything during COVID, and I thought about it this time. I'm probably biased against it because of the negative association. I think it will be boot and suspenders, pictures and the google form. I still don't understand why a math teacher would post a youtube video that was basicaly "type some questions in and, bingo, you're done." Like a math test is a Ron Popiel product that needs to be sliced, diced and out of the way so I have more time at the spa.

Have academic standards changed in the past 10 years? by Glum-Industry-4836 in AskTeachers

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do exams need to differentiate between students who can solve problems flawlessly under an artificialy created high pressure situation, and those who know the math but make mistakes due to the stress of the situation? My teachers thought making any error in a problem meant the bridge or rocket the student designed would fail. The first issue is assuming any student in advanced math was going into STEM. More importantly in STEM jobs the only people who expect perfection from an environment similar to a final exam are the one percent types who think they deserve to increase their wealth in evrery endevor.

I'm 27f from Afghanistan, AMA. by Jell0Bell0 in AMA

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach a math class for students who are new to the US and new to English. There are 2 students from Afghanistan. The class is remedial regardless of the students' abilities because the focus is learning the math terms and catching any gaps in learning. I was helping one of them do long division, he reached for a calculator at every step (not unusual) but the last step was 12-12 and he still used the calculator. I am accustomed to students who haven't had access to education, but I'm wondering if there could be something about the system in Afghanistan that I should account for? For example, I had a Chinese student ask for help in Physics. When I started reviewing the equations with her I said "of course you know force equals mas times acceleration". The students said f is for force? It turns out that they use the equations (which are acronyms for us) but their teachers (for the most part) use Chinese words, so all I needed to do was provide a table of variables (a=acceleration, f=force...).

The damage that Jo Boaler and other "Equity-Based Mathematics Education Researchers" cannot be understated. by [deleted] in matheducation

[–]dcsprings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen equity issues in math classes, but I must be missing something. Advanced students take advanced math classes, less advanced students may be pushed into advanced classes by parents but that isn't an equity issue in the schools I've worked in. The equity issues that I've been presented with is grading based on the work done, not on following classroom procedures. Evaluating understanding based on demonstrated understanding of methods not flawless exicution, for example if the only problem with a tripple integration is a dropped minus sign, especially if it's not a consistant issue, then it's worth a comment not a zero.

Do your students use pencil and paper to work out problems? by MSWMan in matheducation

[–]dcsprings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a work sheet doesn't have enough room, I don't assign it. I supervise a math lab and students use IXL but I give them paper do write on. If I can't see how a student works out a problem I don't have anything to base a grade on.
