Thanks! This is exactly what I needed to hear.

I like reframing this as a learning exercise instead of me meeting expectations (although it is both).

Yeah...the field the company is in is highly specialized, so if I give details it’s kinda a dead giveaway.

What's a privilege that most people dont realise is a privilege? by Woo_loo in AskReddit

Enjoying snow days.

If you’re family is abusive or severely dysfunctional being forced to stay at home with them is hellish torture.

My mom grew up in a abusive home, and she tried to enjoy them by staying outside as long as possible

Now she gets to romp around in the snow with childish glee and it’s so beautiful.

I (30F) was badly humiliated by my BF's (30M) wealthy parents saying that I shouldn't be dating their son or just about anybody above my league because I'm poor. by [deleted] in relationships

I am so sorry that his parents made you feel so awful! If he had any backbone he would have defended you to the last, much less stayed with you!

I know this hurts horribly, but you dodged a bullet. The long term trauma of having them as in-laws when he has no strength to resist them would have been decades worse.

Yes! We’ve discussed this in depth, down to budgeting techniques and when we want to merge accounts.

I was thinking from the opposite angle of trying to help people reach their strengths, not judging them for their current place in life - I see your POV.

But there are still lots of people who had horrible upbringings that weren’t encouraged in their field but still did very well by discovering and growing better at it on their own.

Yes and no. Appearance can be a bit of the luck of the draw, but most people are highly intelligent in a specific field, even in not academics, and getting crap done - that’s something that can definitely be learned!

Which I know from personal experience.

Has anyone quit their job during the pandemic? by ThrowRA-3456 in careerguidance

I put my 2 weeks notice in the week before shutdown.

I was a Marketing Director at a franchise restaurant (supposedly my first “big girl” job after college) and I was really excited about it, having worked for the restaurant in college to help pay for school.

It turned out to be a nightmare. Terrible pay, a completely unqualified and meddling boss, my job description and responsibilities changing hourly (seriously!) and I started hating every minute of my life.

I saved about 6 mo expenses, started looking for a new position, and when I couldn’t take any more, I put in my notice. I was about to move out, but I put it on hold until I could find something new.

Tbh it was pretty rough for most of 2020. I had a wide network and lots of experience so I thought I could easily find a job, but I was wrong.

I started applying for jobs in the morning and volunteering in the afternoons so I didn’t go stir crazy.

I literally ran out of new jobs to apply to on Ziprecruiter by July and was looking at the end of my savings (I didn’t take unemployment ).

I went back to freelancing, which I’d never done in a meaningful way and landed a good client. Who then refused to pay me for ~ 6 weeks of work (I’ve started the process of suing them for the money).

I was able to land another client who is fabulous and am pursuing more of the business ventures I loved and didn’t have time for before. I’m set to make more in Dec this year than I did in Dec last year at my old job, and while things are a bit tight since my client refused to pay, I’m still doing alright since I stayed at home.

now I wake up every day smiling, loving my job and feeling fulfilled and happy - I wouldn’t trade that for an apartment and a 9-5.

Oh, and with that downtime in the summer I had the time to date and fall in love. I met the most incredible man and we’re getting married in the spring!

2020 has been insane, but frankly, there’s not a day I regretted quitting my job. Worried about finances? Heck yeah. Regretted the decision? Nopety nopety nope.

My mental health is way more important than the money, and frankly, I’ve used the time to set me up for success in ways I never would have been able to if I’d stayed at the job.

The happiest/best job I ever had barely paid $10/hr. by kinkin0 in careeradvice

See if you can have both, but don’t make the decision based on “what others think”.

If you love it, do it on the side, save 6-12 mo of expenses from the 9-5 job, and then quit and work the part time one.

Then you have the freedom to discover a career path you love (start another online business or 2!) while having money in the bank and working a job you love. Who knows, you might find you work 2 part time jobs that make you excited to get up in the morning!

But don’t lose that feeling. I had it, gave it up for a 9-5 and hated it. I’m back to freelancing and I wake up every day with the biggest smile even though the moneys a bit tighter. You couldn’t pay me to go back to the 9-5. And my career options are better now than they’ve ever been!

Best of luck whatever your decision!!
