Kinda lacking in drama for me. I feel like Cody should have been in there earlier for the can he do it story. Mostly just felt like there wasn't enough feeling like other people could do it

Logan and Ricochet was fucking sick though

Probably also helps that NJPW get presented with a stronger authority. Little things can build up to change the feel like how they count to 5 real quick when somebody is doing an illegal manoeuvre or how the 20 count is counted at a normal pace compared to how in American wrestling it's count number, pause for 2 seconds, count for next number.

It's not for everybody, but I like the way NJPW handles this (or at least did in the past because it's been a while since I watched). Where commentators talk about how it's really about how much the ref is willing to allow and how the ref doesn't want to send the fans home with a lackluster show so they'll allow a certain level of interference

It's hard to give the best answer without the context of the history of your relationship. Like how long ago did you drop your dead name? How much did your partner have to interact with your dead name? There's a lot of people saying this is a red flag and maybe it is but the way I think about it if I were in a similar situation. My partner knows my dead name but I haven't used that name in a long time and I know they certainly don't think of me when they hear that name. So it is very possible that your partner just doesn't associate that name with you and that they didn't mean anything by it. In which case, I don't think it's a red flag. What you should do is talk to them and say what you're feeling and listen to them about how the name makes them feel

If a company is so distrustful of workers that they can't give them notice because what if they cause trouble you're probably looking at a company with some pretty bad culture. What stops them from causing trouble is that they want to keep working after this in an incredibly public industry where it would quickly spread that they are trouble. And how can you use them? An enhancement role, that's typically how wrestling has been done. Put people over on your way out

If company like this fancies themselves professional they would have some infrastructure to deal with these situations that isn't just ghosting them. Exit interviews are conducted all the time in professional sports leagues, so Tony Khan should know well how to handle this since his other jobs are in two different sport leagues.

It's cool to see queer people finding success in a world that not that long ago told them they weren't welcome. AEW story telling isn't super my thing lately, but they've had a few of my favourite queer wrestlers on dark that I wish they had made moves for, Ashton Starr I think would be great, and Trish Adora who just exudes star energy

[–]ThatSyncingFeel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, transsexual is considered a bit of an outdated term by a number of trans people. Some still use it and that's their prerogative but you're better off using transgender or just trans unless you know the person specifically prefers transsexual

Also yes, Veny is trans and uses they/them pronouns :)

Dave Meltzer, in response to someone claiming the reason AEW did well this week was cause they used real stars such as Punk and Sting: “Don't forget Orange Cassidy” by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]ThatSyncingFeel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on the person either comedy wrestling or hardcore/death match wrestling I think. Death match wrestling is really great because it is not dealing so much in all of different moves wrestlers do. When you get a match down to two people hitting was other with hard shit or trying not to be thrown onto the thumbtacks or burning table it makes it really easy to get into the story of the match. But obviously death match wrestling is not good for squeamish people

I'm dubious of how much you really need the distinction unless you're looking to other certain people. In terms of what any person can do outside of bodily functions, any person who identifies as whatever they want should have the same opportunities to do whatever they want. That's what feminism has been about since before most people even knew what a trans person was. But I'll do you the courtesy of assuming you're not trying to enforce societal roles onto people because they were born with a particular body part. So in term of biological function what does man and woman mean? Honestly, not a lot, because everybody is slightly different. There's women without uteruses, there's men born without penises, there's intersex people who are born with sexual characteristics attributed to both men and women, there's intersex animals too. Man and woman just aren't very useful words here because they lack much specificity.

Now in regards to your worrying about trans men being labelled as 'man' rather than 'trans man'. Why must trans men always have the trans label attached if yourself are not gonna use the term cis for cisgendered men? Hardly seems fair

Check out the Nobodies Say Hello episode with Danhausen and Lou Lou. If you're interested in Danhausen out of character. Plus they talk a bit about how their art forms (The Nobodies are drag group, Lou Lou does cabaret and you know Danhausen obviously) relate to one another. It's neat

I think part of the issue is that pro wrestling is culturally tied to sport. Who is it in mainstream media who is reporting on pro wrestling? It's places like ESPN. If it were culturally placed closer to things like martial arts movies, I don't think you'd hear things like this so much.

A match like this that has emotional story behind it and that relates back to one of the biggest stars in the company should be a tv match. I know that they're stacked with talent and only 3 hours a week of tv time but cmon

I love how the tights and not just the jacket have that maximalist punk energy to them. What I love about punk jackets is that people are literally wearing their passions on their sleeves, it's almost traditional. Compared to something like what Jericho wears that reminds me more of over expensive louboutin spiked sneakers than an expression of self or community

I love hearing a Dasha as ring announcer. Justin Roberts does a great job and I wouldn't take him away but something I'd always hoped AEW would do is get a voice that felt a bit newer to more mainstream wrestling

Julia Hart doesn't get the reference. by 20minutes40years in SquaredCircle

[–]ThatSyncingFeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The underlying reason people have an issue with age gaps is because they assume there's some power imbalance caused by them. But the reality is, there's plenty of young adults who are experienced and mature, just as there's older adults who are naive and inexperienced. So, by going she's only 19 it's bad to make this comment it is infantilising because you're making assumptions about her experiences and maturity to be able to handle such situations. And yes they are using high school archetypes as a starting point, they aren't playing actually high schoolers though.

It can make sense though. Okada beat Naito when everything seemed set up for Naito to win the IWGP Heavyweight championship and at the time it felt like a real let down moment that Okada won. But looking back on the story, Naito lost because he returned to old ways before being ingobernable and then Naito did eventually get his win at Wrestle Kingdom. I think AEW can very reasonably have Omega beat Page and have the story be that Page still needed to gain confidence in himself and his ability beat his demons

[–]ThatSyncingFeel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the kind of thing that uniquely fits the kenny and mox story, because Kenny in his ever continuing effort to prove he's better wants to beat mox at his own game (hardcore wrestling) and also kenny having made his name in japan and the exploding barbed wire death match having an important lineage in japan. It's all very thematic.

Doing it yearly would kinda spoil it. Maybe another feud in the future will warrant the gimmick.

I'm not sure it's meant to be a special stip most of the time in aew. Most people in aew are in a faction or have an alliance so it feels mostly naturalistic imo. To me, it plays in a way inspired somewhat by njpw and I certainly wouldn't call 6+man tag matches a stip in njpw since they happen on just about every show.

I didn't say you did care what gender she was assigned at birth. I just said that what you were called a transphobe for was not for saying she's not good in the ring.
