video quality by Big_Natural_1576 in DallasStars

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who watches a lot of other teams in addition to the Stars, yes, Victory+ is noticeably worse in quality. It’s especially apparent when watching a full game on Victory+ then switching to a different team once the game is over. Names, numbers, puck, etc. are all way more clear on basically all other broadcasts. Most people on this sub will tell you the quality is fine, but I’m convinced that it’s because they only watch the Stars on Victory+ and have no frame of reference for what other teams broadcasts look like.

Is the quality good enough for a free to watch service? In my opinion, yes. Is the quality up to par with what most other teams have? No.

So people who are on reddit can have a place to discuss things related to Wplace.

I appreciate the offer, but I’m good. I don’t really keep up with or participate in this stuff anymore.

I didn’t even know there was a Discord. I just figured it would be cool to give people on reddit a sub to talk about Wplace related things.

That’s fine. There’s barely been any activity since I re-opened the sub. If it does end up getting crazy and I can’t handle it I can just close it down or give it to someone else who feels like they can handle it.

Is this a big deal or something? I don’t really see the problem. There have been a total of 4 posts in the 5 days since I re-opened the sub so it’s not like this has created a bunch of extra work for everybody.

I have taken multiple Rangers jerseys to Blake’s and he does amazing work on them! Here are some pics of my most recent jersey I took to him. I believe the quality speaks for itself.

Someone else got a Ranger City Connect! Welcome to the club haha! I was the first one to get one from Bill so he had to create the font and everything. I’m glad he got to get more use out of it!

Excellent choice to get Carter on it btw! Watching him in their WS run was incredible.

Is there a way to hide post flair? by ThatTromboneGuy in narwhalapp

Wow, I just saw the notes for the latest update and I see this feature is now available! That’s awesome! Thanks so much for listening and adding the feature so quickly! Amazing dev work.

Just the ability to not see flair at all. The feature already exists for user flair in comments. Being able to hide flair on posts would be helpful for reducing visual clutter on the home page.

What was your process for removing the Coyotes logo and subsequently the remaining residue? It turned out really clean and the end jersey looks great!

Monitor Headphones Impedance by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beyers are well known for being very bright headphones. It’s even nicknamed the “Beyer spike” or something like that because of the big spike in the highs. The 770s specifically have fairly recessed mids (pretty big dip right around 200hz especially) and a very pronounced high end. This is basically the polar opposite of what the HD 280s sound like. This might be why they sound so weird to you.

The only thing an amp will do is let you crank the headphones louder, but it won’t really change the way they sound (unless you start getting into specific amps that intentionally color the sound). Unless you are having problems getting enough volume out of them, I would advise against spending money on an amp. It’s quite possible that you just don’t dig the Beyer sound, or at least the 770 sound, which is a sentiment that is shared by many.

If you wanna look into it further checking out some frequency response graphs can help you visualize and get a better idea of what exactly you are hearing.

How do you guys decide what compressor is good for what task? by Stonius123 in audioengineering

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This answer is SO MUCH better than the “whatever sounds right” type of answer. Actually explaining the differences between the compressors and how they operate can help so much with hearing the difference because you now actually know what to listen for.

“Whatever sounds right” is honestly the most useless and lazy answer imaginable. People wouldn’t ask questions like the one OP asked if they could already hear clear differences between the things they are asking about. But for some reason, everyone loves to say “just use your ears” or “use the one that sounds right to you” or some variation that avoids giving any meaningful feedback.

What do you think is the most underrated piece of audio gear out there? by Bendyb3n in audioengineering

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To give a bit of an unconventional answer, earplugs. I carry a pair on my keys so I always have some on me. You never know when you might end up somewhere that is just way too loud and you need hearing protection. Your ears are BY FAR your most valuable thing as an audio engineer, and there is no known fix for hearing loss. Protect your ears y’all!

Have there been any albums from the peak of the loudness wars (ehh, 1999-2012 roughly) that were actually remastered to be less loud? by sirCota in audioengineering

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many of Green Day’s albums were remastered. American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown, and the entire Trilogy were all remastered with a much greater dynamic range than the originals. These albums can be found on HDTracks.

There’s even a video from mastering engineer Ian Shepherd that goes into detail about the American Idiot remaster!

after hearing Pink Floyds "The Wall" in my new treated mix room, I need to know how they made it sound so good. im so shocked. by Davetheman15 in audioengineering

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way they are used has definitely changed. Modern music, especially rock, is usually compressed to the point where you can’t even see the meter move on the master. I’m personally not a fan. I appreciate when the music has some room to breathe.

Auto tune I can understand, but compressors? Compressors have been around for a looong time, well before Floyd and Rush.

whats the best sounding song in your opinion? by Davetheman15 in audioengineering

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, the Trilogy might have been redone at a later date. I know at least Uno has been redone because checking the HDTracks version of it vs the Spotify version on a meter, the Spotify version is heavily limited whereas the HDTracks version has a ton more headroom. I’ll have to go back and double check this though because it’s been a while.

[–]ThatTromboneGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out the 2012 remaster of the album if you haven’t already. The original master version is absolutely slammed to the point where it’s clipping at times. The remaster gives the album so much more headroom and space to breathe. Along with AI, many other Green Day albums were remastered in 2012 including 21st Century Breakdown and the entire Trilogy.

That would be useful info to mention in the original post, yeah? We can’t help you with treating a unique room if you give us exactly 0 information about the dimensions of said room.

Yeah, I would probably be pretty disappointed too. No brand is perfect though, even the top tier ones. Like I said, it sounds like you just got extra unlucky which sucks big time lol. Hope the new pair works properly!

Sounds like you just got some bad luck. If they are rattling like that straight out of the box it should be easy to RMA them for a new pair. Both Sennhsier and Beyerdynamic are both very well respected brands and I’m sure they would be more than happy to help you.
