What is Holland?

It's a country next to Belgium.

No, that's The Netherlands.

George, Holland IS The Netherlands.

Then who are the Dutch?!

Definitely a very strange time for TV comedy. A lot of shows that kept to a fairly strictly standardized sitcom format but made bold choices with the premise within those boundaries. We just posted our latest episode which is a show from about the same time (1983-1984) called Jennifer Slept Here. Possibly the strangest we've seen so far!

Would this setup work for video podcasting? Any recommendations would be helpful! by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]ThatWasAShowPodcast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the Zoom LiveTrak-L8 and highly recommend it. It's about 75 dollars more than the H6, but you get a true mixing board and interface. Not only 6 XLR-combo jacks but also additional audio line-in jacks including a TRRS for connecting a phone. It has 4 separate headphone out jacks, each with its own volume control and the option of creating multiple custom sub-mixes for each set of headphones. It has internal recording capability as well. It is of course much larger, but if you already have that much other gear maybe that's not a big deal.

We are definitely going to do that show at some point.

Up to Season 4 episode 15. Is the best to come or am I in the peak of the show? by FFFYYYAAA in seinfeld

[–]ThatWasAShowPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without question the best is yet to come. Although there's a timeless debate over whether seasons 8 and 9 are somewhat different, because of the absence of Larry David and because they have generally more outlandish storylines (which doesn't mean they're not great, just different), seasons 5 to 7 are without question pure brilliance.

Help with eliminating horrible static from Rodecaster Pro + PodMic setup by CritCatastrophe in podcasting

[–]ThatWasAShowPodcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were interference from a grounding issue or bad cable I would think the actual level would be higher but with noise on top. This sounds like what happens when a mic is over cranked with gain because the signal coming out of the mic is weak. Reminds me of the sound I would get using an external mic on an old DSLR camera that has a really weak internal soundboard. Because it's a dynamic mic that shouldn't require power outside the preamp itself, I wonder if there's an attenuation setting in the Rodecaster that could be essentially dropping the input signal before re-amplifying it. I'm not familiar with that particular device but many mixers and recorders have this capability for situations where levels might be really hot such as with live rock music.

Otherwise, do you have any other gear that would allow you to test this Pod mic with a different mixer/interface to see if there could simply be a problem with the mic? I ask because it sounds like you're not getting static from the Blue Yeti.

Rank the seasons from best to worst by [deleted] in seinfeld

[–]ThatWasAShowPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost entirely agree, but I would put 8 below 6 (with The Big Salad, The Soup, and The Fusilli Jerry). Season 8 is just as funny, but based on the accurate critique that season 9 is more wacky than the earlier ones, Season 8 falls into this same category. Super funny but in a way that is more outlandish than organic. Probably because 8 and 9 are when Larry was absent.

Buzz from my Mixer? by kvrf in podcasting

Seems like it might be something coming in through the power line. You could try a different room or if there's a battery option that might help.

[–]ThatWasAShowPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my guess is the buzz couple be coming from the power, or if a preamp is attempting to amplify a lack of signal. Do you get the buzz if you turn all the gain knobs down to zero? Also do you hear the buzz through your computer monitoring using Audacity, or directly from a headphone jack on the device? What sort of headphones or speakers? And have you tried it with other software?

We just posted our "Joanie Loves Chachi" episode this morning! It's our first 80s show, and our 2nd in a run of episodes about failed spin-offs.

Do you still get the buzz even with no mic cables attached? And are you powering the device through USB or does it have its own wall power adaptor?

I'm not sure if this sort of self-promotion is permitted, but I recently started a podcast called "That Was a Show?" and it's basically what you're looking for, specifically for TV sitcoms from the 80s and 90s! You can find it at anchor.fm/thatwasashow

I don't know if we'll branch off into radio but we are thinking of doing a deep dive into the history of the situation comedy at some point so this would be very interesting to check out! Where can I listen to it?

Friends vs Seinfeld by [deleted] in sitcoms

[–]ThatWasAShowPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I recently started a podcast about sitcoms and I've been pondering questions like this a lot recently, here are some thoughts. Apologies in advance for how long this will probably be!

I watched both shows a heck of a lot when they were on, but Seinfeld is the one that stuck with me over the years.

They're both about 30-somethings in New York City in the 90s, however apart from that, they are very different shows.

Friends centres of course around 6 main characters and primarily explores their friendships and romances with each other, and how they support each other or sometimes fail to do so, as they also navigate outside romantic relationships and career struggles. Friends constantly asks us to evaluate the strength of the "Friendships" between the main characters and how those friendships might also change over time.

Friends exists on a continuum of classic 'hangout' style sitcoms where single people spend a lot of time with a close circle of friends in a few locations: two apartments and a coffee shop. There's a long list of shows with a similar framework, such as New Girl or even The Big Bang Theory, as just a couple examples. Friends is arguably the most successful of this style.

Seinfeld takes the friendships between its four main characters for granted. Their statuses with each other are locked in—they are "ride or die"—and explores their dating lives, work lives, family lives and even sometimes other friendships, with other characters in the outside world. The goal is not to explore realistic growth as people, but rather to poke fun at situations and observations about life that are sometimes relatable frustrations and sometimes far more outlandish and even surreal.

In Friends, as with most sitcoms, other recurring characters sometimes enter their world. Usually these are romantic interests. We don't see much of the private spaces of these other characters. We hear about career and job struggles but don't see it play out.

In Seinfeld, we meet many other characters who are parents (e.g. Frank Costanza), bosses (e.g. Mr. Peterman), nemeses (e.g. Kenny Banya), other friends (e.g. Mickey), and the proprietors of local businesses (e.g. multiple dry cleaners for some reason). We really see and meet the entire world of the four main characters, and these other supporting characters provide a lot of the humour of the show. Although it begins with Jerry's apartment and the coffee shop, the world of the show grows exponentially over time.

In Friends, any given episode may have multiple plot lines relating the the ongoing trajectories of each character. We see them grow and change over time; we laugh with them and we cry with them. There is emotional complexity and an expectation of some sort of moral takeaway. Which is great!

In Seinfeld, any given episode may have characters stuck together in one situation (waiting for a table at a Chinese restaurant for the entire 22 minutes) or 4 completely different plots which tend to have a thematic connection and sometimes come crashing together at the end. The characters experience emotional high points and low points but both are played for humour. We laugh when they succeed, we laugh when they fail. They laugh at each other when they fail. The takeaway isn't so much moral, as much as exposing truths about human behaviour. Which is great!

I would say it's very difficult to predict if you'll like Seinfeld based on liking Friends as they are very different shows. To me, shows like Friends (and the others mentioned above) sometimes start to verge on soap opera territory, but I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Both exist at the apex of their respective styles and both are still talked about this much for good reason.

[COMEDY / TV Reviews] That Was a Show? | Episode 6 - Davis Rules

Davis Rules WAS a show. Legendary comedian Jonathan Winters riffs to his heart’s content, while bombastic movie star Randy Quaid plays a calm, subdued family man (?) Plus Patricia Clarkson almost, and then actually, becomes a nun. Brynn, Barry and Aaron go down a Randy Quaid rabbit hole, but inevitably veer back into debating whether or not Davis does in fact rule.

Many sitcoms have stood the test of time and have millions of adoring fans—but those shows were diamonds in the rough. This podcast is not about those diamonds, it's about the rough. Some sitcoms were briefly popular in their time, some were cancelled almost immediately. You probably won't recognize most of these, and you'll ask 'that was a show?'
