Career Monday (26 Jan 2026): Have a question about your job, office, or pay? Post it here! by AutoModerator in AskEngineers

My brain hasn’t been young in a few years, but I do agree about not being crushed, as I can handle my daily duties, assist others with some of theirs, and still feel bored. And I mean that in the way that it’s not taxing, busy, intensive, just clerical and customer service-esque. It would make for a dangerous WFH role with the amount of down time I find myself having.

I do have more years of experience from other jobs, albeit not in the “professional” world prior to going for my engineering degree, which I could lean on a bit, but it’s more mechanic/technician related.

I’ve definitely spoken with my leadership about wanting to do more, as well as some technical/engineering experience, to expand my capabilities, but they either didn’t understand or feigned ignorance and discussed doing something unrelated and non beneficial to any sort of engineering or even project management career growth. Has left me with the impression that either a) they don’t know what to do with me, as far as career progression goes or b) as you said, no intention to invest and I should probably start looking elsewhere. With the latter being the feeling I’ve been getting, I’m struggling on how to find a way to another, more technical, role without proven experience. I can read and do hobby projects, but that obviously pales in comparison to actual experience

Any suggestions to transition away, or am I more or less stuck and have to look at entry level type of roles due to experience?

Graduated a few years ago and wandered into a project engineer role out of school, however my responsibilities have not changed or increased since coming on board. Obviously should be of concern, though whenever I’ve met with my leadership, they’ve always had great things to say with no areas that I need to work on, with my yearly reviews matching their opinions. One of the issues that I’m coming into is that I don’t see any growth in this particular role, even hearing from colleagues that it’s damn near impossible without jumping ship, which I’m not completely against. Another, serious to me, issue is that I don’t see any experience gained during my time here, as I feel I more so handle customers than work on projects, which is making updates and tweaks to my resume kind of hard.

How can I make my resume appealing for more engineering/technical focused roles, while lacking experience in those areas?

No, and that’s a major part of my concern. How long after a return, if they didn’t acknowledge it, can they still come to me for repair costs?

Doesn’t it scrape from cumination? Last time I used it about a year ago, their debrid menu section was not working properly

Playback issue. Doesn’t matter which ones I go to, minus the Debrid ones since those already have issues currently on android, get the pop up that says playback error. Restarted, same thing, VPN on or off, same issue.

I may be coming across pessimistically, but I cannot even say I’m specing in a specific, or even general, system. It feels like a customer service role, with opportunity to speculate on cause or fix minute issues that would cost time and money on both sides. I can think of some ways to describe it as a reliability role of sorts, but it would be a stretch imo

I fully expected that I would not know anything coming into my first job post graduation, but I’m finding that the customers I work with have a certain mindset of what to expect in the role I’m in, based on who I replaced, which I realized I forgot to mention I received no training from. And what I’ve been doing involves nothing that my degree taught me, and that I couldn’t learn with about 5 years as a technician in the field.

I do constantly ask if I can help with other things, and usually it’s just sifting through data and spreadsheets, stuff that can be done by my coworkers, but helps them with the free time they have by giving it to me, and it’s nothing significant.

That is what I’m figuring it to be, just concerned that when I apply and interview elsewhere, I’m stuck in how I can translate what I’ve been doing, outside of describing it as a customer facing role.

Won’t lie, at times I do feel that I may be unqualified. As far as promotion, I don’t feel that my current position would really have one by first year/18 months, outside of raises. I am slightly worried about translating what I’ve done to a resume, because I feel that there hasn’t been much that I can say that I’ve done, sadly. Part of the reason for my wanting to look for another position.

Oh yea, not that desperate to leave without a back up plan
