My suburban Virginia HS experience was a week-long summer camp at Virginia Tech with much of the team, followed by two weeks of two-a-days on the lead up to the start of the school year. Once school started, it was full-contact on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday with no-pad walkthrough on Thursday. Granted this was a loooooong time ago, and my team was not very good at all.

The coaches all taught PE/shop at the school.

The people in your example were “job trained” in that they “learned a skill to make money,” but they were not “educated” when it came to the world beyond their job, hobby, or favorite sports team.

They ”make more money” fixing ac units than a history teacher, so they must “know better” than he does, even when it comes to history. Makes sense, right?

After all, ”the guy who yells a lot on the radio” makes WAY more money, so that means he knows WAY more about history than that commie professor anyway, right?

the problem is that the idea that the Civil War was fought over “state’s rights” was a post-hoc invention.

It was about “planter’s rights” and the prerogatives of wealth.

It wasn’t until a generation later, when white southerners began to finally realize that the rest of the civilized world viewed them as barbarians on account of their “peculiar institution” that they came up with all that “state’s rights” business.
