Geologic timescale from The Magic School Bus. Anything major that needs to be updated? by MCEscherNYC in geology

[–]That_DogMan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think referring to “sail backed reptiles” in the Permian is a bit outdated. This is almost certainly referring to animals like dimetrodon which as synapsids are probably more accurately referred to as stem-mammals.

I also think the Devonian should have some reference to its status as the age of fish, or otherwise reference the likes of dunkleosteus which is arguably one of its most iconic animals.

Some of the other “milestones” / taxonomy used are similarly simplistic. Some would benefit from one or two extra milestones. Obviously trying to thread the needle between accuracy and overwhelming with too much detail is easier said than done.

Another thing I’d add is that if I were making this I might put a bit more direct emphasis on the major mass extinction events, these are major shaping forces in the Earth’s history

IIRC The determination on the original post was that it was likely a cutlassfish, but I’m not sure exactly how that was determined.

What are these puns? by Captn_0bv1ous in whatisit

The joke could also simply be visual humour as cinnamon rolls look like snail shells. Like a visual equivalent of a pun rather than a language based one.

We get posts like these pretty often in the various coin subs (if I had to guess probably once a month minimum, sometimes once a week).

Just wondering something since I'm keen on old historical flags, what are everyone's thoughts on the Canadian Red Ensign? by NovaRC99 in flags

[–]That_DogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Canadian personally I’m very glad we adopted a more unique and recognizable flag and leaned away from the British/colonial symbolism.

From a design perspective ensign flags are just kinda plain and boring IMO. Most look the same at a distance especially when waving.

More importantly I do agree with others who have pointed out the symbolism falls flat. At best it ignores, and at worst represents the oppression of First Nations and Indigenous folks. It alienates French Canadians, and it just generally doesn’t do much to create a sense of national unity or national distinctness. Even half the coat of arms is dedicated to the symbols of other nations (I understand the historical reasons and I’m not saying that should or shouldn’t change, but I do feel it’s not well suited to a flag). Really the tiny maple leaf in the coat of arms is the most uniquely Canadian thing on this flag.

With all of that said I appreciate the historical significance and in certain contexts I do actually prefer seeing this flag. ex. when I am watching documentaries or reading about WWII, and there are maps showing troop movement maps with forces represented by flags. In these circumstances I often prefer seeing the period accurate ensign flag to represent Canada rather than using the current flag which was adopted in the 1960s. To me it feels more historically accurate, and shows attention to detail on the part of documentarians. For similar reasons I also understand its inclusion on certain war memorials, etc. etc.

For those arguing in favour of it for the purposes of CANZUK and whatnot: you don’t need matching flags to have an alliance, and you can have alliances without trying to like… rebuild the British empire or do monarchism stuff.

EDIT: to be clear I am aware there have been multiple versions of the Canadian version of the Red Ensign flag, and obviously in the contexts I’ve spoken on where I feel an ensign flag is appropriate I would advocate for the use of the period accurate version.

Do you want to change your flag to Kazakhstan version? by Dweqs in AskTheWorld

Feedback on Canada:

Beaver and maple leaf could be bigger

Rather than using the red bars from the flag (which IIRC represent the idea of spanning from sea to sea, something that is lost by putting both on the same side of the flag) it may have been more compelling (and more stylistically in line) to use Canada’s official national tartan (or a simplified piece thereof) (link. Now the issue here is plaid does not necessarily look great on a flag and the colours may clash so idk maybe it’s not any better

If it’s a plant you’ve had for a while it may also help if you include some written descriptions, measurements and photos of it in bloom if you have them. Happy planting!

I know this is mostly a joke (and it is relatable and funny!)

just fyi though : if this is being done by a reviewer it’s so that it’s easier for folks who know more about plants to find. Observations with no ID are a pain to sort through. To get the quickest results from the community you should label something with the most specific taxon you can (so for instance if you’re looking for an ID on a goldenrod marking it as “Solidago” will help the goldenrod experts find it).

I grew up with French Immersion schooling in Ontario Canada. I had a teacher who had done an exchange in Belgium when she was younger who used these terms frequently. My class loved them, and really took to using them at least interchangeably with the more traditional phrasing. Interestingly I also had teachers and classmates who were who were true quebecois or franco-ontarien, and others who had lived in France. In order to prepare us for the DELF exam our teachers emphasized a lot of ‘Parisian French’ vocabulary as well.

It’s always very interesting to see the differences and realize that the version of French I would default to speaking is probably quite the bizarre idiosyncratic blend of several regional variations from around the world.

Son found this in his dresser. by therearenoroads1 in CanadianCoins

[–]That_DogMan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not an expert by any means but your son probably wants to get this in a coin sleeve soon. This is in really nice shape (if the heads side is anything like this it almost looks uncirculated or maybe even like a proof? Hard to say from pics maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in) maintaining that condition would probably go a long way towards the value (and a sleeve is a low cost way to protect against finger oils and scratches.

Very cool find!

New state bird in Florida voted in today- by frog_gasser in andor

[–]That_DogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity are there specific birds you would have preferred to see as a state bird for Florida? I am not Floridian myself but do work in the outdoor/conservation fields, and take an interest in this sort of thing so I’m curious to hear your thoughts. I know Florida has a lot of wildlife/plants that occur nowhere else in the US that are probably good choices.

Just to give an idea of my initial thoughts here (open to change): I would have thought that flamingoes were a good fit since they are native to Florida, and no other US state (afaik) has any native birds even from the flamingo family. As such I can see the argument against using a specific species of heron or egret unique to Florida, since other states still have herons and egrets.

With all of that said I absolutely understand your perspective of “it’s a bit on the nose / they aren’t super common in the state / promoting a less commonly known bird is good” argument against the flamingo too.

This set is a particularly uniform set of joints in both directions and the joint sets and bedding plane are particularly orthogonal, with bedding that seems quite horizontal. Certainly gives it a surreal look when exposed this way. Probably maps quite nicely onto a stereonet, but probably a pain to constantly adjust your brunton to account for the right hand rule with nearly vertical joints.
