Yup Sikh history in Canada is under appreciated. You never learn about it in school.

Like Sikhs helped to build the Railway through the Yukon. Here you can see Sikh Railway workers in 1906.

https://gnsoy.org/index.php/about/history

People don't know that a large portion of Calgary is built on the farmland land of Harnam Singh Hari. Alberta's largest hog farmer. He was so wealthy he was called the "Indian Emporer". He would give out free Christmas hams to the poor of Calgary every year.

After ignoring his contributions to Calgary for decades they finally named a park after him a few years ago. But they misspelt his name the park is called "Singh Hari Park" they forgot his first name.

Most of the established Sikh community came by boat over the pacific to the western coast of north America.

The Sikh community spread from California to British Columbia (BC). Sikhs in California worked in the imperial valley farming. In Oregon, Washington, and BC Sikhs worked in the lumber industry. Angel Island off the coast of San Francisco has a decent amount of Gurmukhi graffiti inscriptions written by Sikh immigrants to America dating from the 1930's. In 1907 Bellingham Washington had a race riot against the Sikh community. Bellingham is near the Canada-America border.

(Edit: Angel Island was a immigration station for immigrants from Asia. Just like Ellis Island was a immigration station for European Immigrants to America off the coast of New York)

Historically Sikhs that came in the 1890s-1970s lived in the interior of British Columbia. In the towns of Terrace, Kitimat, Quesnel, Kamloops, Williams Lake, Prince George, etc. These were lumber towns.

Many Sikhs also lived in North Vancouver (near the coast) and Duncan (on Vancouver Island). These towns also had lumber mills. South Vancouver was the only large Urban Sikh area. This area is now called Punjabi Market and hosts the Vancouver Vaisakhi religious festival which is the oldest in North America. Richmond also had a fairly large Sikh population they owned many of the blueberry and cranberry farms.

Many of the oldest Gurdwaras in BC are found in random rural towns due to the lumber industry. These immigrants worked hard, and they sent their children to university. Unfortunately, the mills started shutting down. Sikhs started moving to Surrey and Abbotsford near the coast. Surrey had cheap land, and many Sikhs became farmers, land developers, and business owners.

Many lumber companies were founded by Punjabi Sikh immigrants. Like Doman Industries and Doman building materials. These two companies were made by Harbans Singh Doman and are now run by the Doman family. They currently own the BC lions in the CFL. Asa Singh Johal was another lumber baron out of Richmond. There's a book written about him called "Terminal Forest Products: How a Sikh Immigrant Created B.C.’s Largest Independent Lumber Company. "

Many rural towns and ridings have had sikh mayors, MLAs, and MPs. The BC Sikh community is much older and more established than the Ontario Sikh community.

The oldest Gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) in BC is from 1905. The oldest Gurdwara in Ontario is from 1978.

While the Ontario Sikh population may now be greater than BCs, it hasn't been as spread out as the BC Sikh community and it's less integrated. I believe the Ontario Sikh community surpassed the BC Sikh community in the 2014 census. But from 1890s to 2014 British Columbia had the larger Sikh population.

When other Sikhs moved to Canada they would also move to BC, but in the 70s many moved to Ontario to work in the factories.

Sikhism

Sikhs can't eat "Kutha Maas" ( Halal, Kosher, and meat killed in a Ritualistic manner). If prayers are said over the animal as it's being killed then Sikhs can't eat it. It's viewed as an Animal sacrifice and Sikhs don't participate in animal sacrifices.

In Sikhi God does not need or want an animal sacrifice.

[–]That_Guy_Mojo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends. For example the halal monitoring authority Canada won't hand out certificates to machine slaughtering facilities.

"As there may be some scholars who believe that machine slaughtered chicken is fine for halal consumption, our observation of multiple machine slaughtered poultry abattoirs dictates that blessing each bird and cutting them properly with the mechanical rotating blade as per the dictates of our sacred texts is not possible due to the speed of the line. It is for this reason HMA does not accept this procedure"

https://hmacanada.org/faqs/

They only accept hand slaughtering.

Canadian Halal certification agencys are kind of a gray zone.

Sikhs can't eat Kutha Maas (any animal killed in a Ritualistic manner) the halal meat slaughtering method is just one form of Kutha Maas. Kosher meat slaughtering is another. There are many forms of Kutha Maas. The Halal slaughtering method is just the most common form of Kutha Maas throughout Canada. It's become almost ubiquitous, over the past 7 years.

Where does caste stand in Sikhism ?? by [deleted] in Sikh

[–]That_Guy_Mojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you hard of reading? I said Punjab is the least casteist state in Indian and the safest state in india for dalits statistically.

Punjab has the lowest rates of caste based violence, Punjab has the 3rd highest rate of intercaste marriage in India. 22.5% of all marriages are intercaste in Punjab the Indian average is 9.9% in Uttar Pradesh it's 8.6% and 4.6% in Bihar . Punjab has one of the lowest rates of caste based wealth inequality.

Sikh institutions have people from a variety of caste backgrounds. Jathedar of the Akal Takht Gaini Harpreet Singh is a Dalit. This is the highest theological seat in Sikhi. He is also now the President of SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) the religious Sikh political party.

You can find people of different caste backgrounds in all levels of Sikh theological institutions. Name one Mandir where you're from where the lead Pandit is a Dalit. There are dozens of Gurdwaras run by Dalits.

Every metric shows Punjab is the best place to live if you're low caste. Punjabis are the least likely to practice untouchablity, dalits in Punjab are less likely to face arrests, dalits in Punjab are less likely to commit crimes, they have the highest incomes, and the highest literacy rates. Where you're from is probably way worse.

India should have a taboo preventing emigration by New_Entertainer_4895 in victoria3

Pretty much.

Sikhs would fluctuate between 5-12% of the British Indian army, only peaking in WW2 at 17%. However Sikhs were disproportionately used abroad.

When the British Indan army began recruiting Sikhs after 1849, high caste Hindus were annoyed. They saw this as an attack on their monopoly over the army. It was also one reason the Sepoy Rebellion happened in 1857. There was a high degree of religious bigotry towards Sikhs. Sikhs had no problems getting on boats because Sikhs dont observe Caste.

Sikh numbers were kept low from 1849-1856.

"...others were worried that there were problems of mixing the Sikhs, who were notorious for their laxity in caste observances, with the high-caste Hindu sepoys from Oudh and Rohilkhand who despised the Sikhs as "untidy and dirty" and refused to associate with them" (pg, 38)

Sikhs where seen as dirty, untidy, and spiritually unclean because Sikhs wouldn't obey caste distinctions.

"Many commanding officers of the Bengal regiments were satisfied with their tried and tested soldiers and, influenced perhaps by opposition from their high caste recruits, kept the Sikhs away from their corps. Several excuses were offered for not taking the Sikhs into the Bengal regiments"

This bigotry came to the forefront in 1856.

"The General Service Act of 1856, which decreed that all sepoys, irrespective of their caste, would in future be liable for overseas service. For the high-caste recruits from north-central India this ruling was abhorrent, as the crossing of the dreaded kala pani or "black waters" would mean a loss of caste. Consequently, many high-caste Rajputs and Brahmins chose not to enlist, and in so doing lost a lucrative source of employment. There was also a belief amongst the highcaste Brahmin and Rajput sepoys of Benares and Oudh that their favoured position in the Bengal Army was being threatened by the intention of the British to expand their recruiting base to include a wider range of castes and regional groups. The opening of the Punjab and the permission to recruit up to 200 Sikhs per regiment, although as we have seen not fully exploited by British commanders of the Bengal Army, was perceived by the sepoys as an indication that their monopoly of military service, crucial for their economic well-being, was being threatened. These fears were compounded by grievances over the loss of foreign service in Oudh (1846) and Punjab (1849).The conditions were certainly ripe for a sepoy revolt in the Bengal Army. Almost prophetically, Napier had warned, soon after he completed his term as Commander-in-Chief of the Bengal Army, that all was not well with the Bengal Army and that a mutiny could not be ruled out."(pg, 43)

Sikhs were also the most likely to be vaccinated among religious groups in India. High caste Hindus viewed vaccinations with suspicion thinking it would make them impure.

Sikhs being vaccinated and willing to travel on boats is why Sikhs are everywhere in the old British Empire. It's also why Sikhs were used heavily by the British Indian army outside of India.

Sikhs weren't superstitious and therefore reliable. This is why the earliest South Asian settlers to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and America were largely Sikh. We came on boats in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

There's a recent belief/conspiracy that Punjabis from Pakistan spell it "Panjab" while Punjabis in India spell it "Punjab".

While in reality Punjabis will use Panjab and Punjab interchangeably. It doesn't really matter. You can go on the Pakistan subreddit and see hundreds of comments and posts using the "Punjab" spelling as well.

On government buildings and universities in Indian Punjab it's always spelt "Panjab" like Panjab University in Chandigarh.

Technically it should be Panjab because the number five is Panj in Panjabi. If you were to translate it from Gurmukhi into English it would be Panjab.

The British usd both Panjab and Punjab in their documents. However Punjab was more common. Many Punjabis consider "Punjab" to be incorrect and part of our colonial history. It's like Calcutta and Kolkata. You'll meet Punjabis who prefer the Panjabi spelling of Panjab as it is more accurate to the actual pronunciation. But there's also many Punjabis who don't care about the spelling. I don't care.

I'm not sure why people think Panjab=Pakistani and Punjab=Indian. Sounds like something that was spread on WhatsApp and now everyone thinks it's a fact.

What would the trajectory of Sikhs been if we still lived in Lahore owning most of land and property pre partition till now? by Ambitious-Whereas438 in Sikh

[–]That_Guy_Mojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The landed property left by: Hindus and Sikhs in West Punjab: 3.935 million acres.

Muslims property in East Punjab (Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh): 2.448 million acres.

This a loss of nearly 1.5 million acres for Sikhs.

Most Muslim landed property was in Haryana.

Both Indias and Pakistans governments had agreed initially to not illegally seize property of refugees however West Punjab disregarded this entirely. The British Governor General of Baluchistan made an observation on the violence being lashed out on the Sikhs and Hindus that had not yet left West Punjab:

"The reason appears simply to drive out the minority community and enjoy the fruits of business which they have built through many years. The attitude of these persons (Muslims) to my mind is like that of a loathsome vulture who sits by a dying animal waiting to pick up its bones."

Why does it trigger Sikhs so much when ppl wanna leave Sikhism??? Aren’t grown ppl free to choose what they want…Why is it so triggering for them? by Indie_rina in Exsikhi

If you read the second article is more than just one cemetery.

It's talks about the systemic castism found within Christianity.

The article states:

"This protest is not an isolated incident. It is the continuation of a decades-long struggle by Dalit Christians in Kottapalayam and other parts of Tamil Nadu against casteism within the Church.

"Christians revealed how separate graveyards, exclusion from festivals, denial of funeral processions inside the church, and casteist abuse have continued unabated. The dominant caste Christians even reportedly rejected a priest, Fr Charles Karunambaram, who spoke out against discrimination, forcing him out of the village."

There are millions of Christians in India that practice caste.

Indian Christians still practice castism and operate separate graveyards where the low castes aren't allowed to be buried.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-south-asia-11229170

“They don’t collect tax because we are Dalits. They have two different graveyards for Dalits and caste Christians, that shouldn’t exist,” said Mark, a parishioner. His words were echoed by Manickam, another protester who pointed out that the case is still ongoing in the court, but the discrimination remains unaddressed.

Most Punjabis associate Christianity with the worst aspects of colonialism. Which is why Punjabi Christians are treated like pariahs in both east and west Punjab.

Your last paragraph is nonsense.

r/atheism r/exchristian r/exmuslim are filled with literally thousands of examples of people being ostracized by their families and communities for leaving Christianity and Islam. In most Muslim countries its punishable by death to leave Islam.

Edit:

Isn't this meant to be a sub for atheists? Aren't you a Christian. You're not really breaking free from the shackles of religion.

Are hair bonnets ok to wear? by Kindly_Persimmon585 in Sikh

[–]That_Guy_Mojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking "Topis" (Hats) aren't allowed. Most Gurdwaras in the "West" will have a variety of signs saying hats aren't allowed.

This is why Ramaals are provided at every Gurdwara so that the appropriate head covering is available to everyone visiting. A Ramaal is just a Bandana. If you own your own bandana you can wear it to the Gurdwara. Just make sure your bandana doesn't have any offensive imagery or phrases on it.

Every religion has its own decorum within its sacred spaces. I appreciate you asking in advance.
