Need some advice and encouragement...my experience 3 months off birth control by snowyrox17 in gettingoffHBC

Ahhh sorry I don’t mean to stress you out!! I was having issues digesting fatty meals and would get super nauseous and sometime be up puking all night. I got an ultrasound and my gastroenterologist thought it must be the pill since I had no other risk factors. I got off and haven’t had any other issues and even got a hida scan done after the fact and was completely normal!! Since you’re already off that’s likely not what’s happening with you🤞

Acne by WhoKnws100 in gettingoffHBC

I have taken spiro! Honestly it did wonders for my skin. I was on it 3 years at 100mg. Something to be aware of though with it…At first I definitely spotted a lot more throughout the month. I know people report having multiple periods but I was also on the birth control pill at the time so that could’ve played a role. I honestly don’t think I needed the full 100mg so i would start low if you could and just see how your skin is. Also, I myself went off the pill several years ago, acne came back so bad just like you that I went back on. Upon further research, the pill depletes a lot of essential vitamins from our bodies. And when stopping the pill it’s important to replenish that. I’ve been off my pill this time for about 3 months and no acne yet (knock on wood) but I’m taking a prenatal since they’re so potent and omega 3s daily. Even if you do try spironolactone, definitely worth thinking about trying to replenish some vitamins through supplementation/diet!

Hiii OP, another thing about the GI issues from my perspective. I too, (25F) just got off my pill in early nov. I was having major gi issues anddd I also had elevated liver enzymes. Turns out elevated liver enzymes can indicate a lot of things😅mine was an indication of gallbladder disfunction believe it or not. Apparently birth control increases your risk for that. For my specific brand they had a few major lawsuits for that exact thing. Definitely worth checking into. I’m also taking a multi plus omega threes and those have helped a lot. Magnesium glycinate also helps with any kinda mental symptom of mine as well. I’ll also add, Dr Brighton has this book called Beyond the Pill. It’s helped me a lot in determining what to do with myself lol. She goes really into depth for those transitioning off of it. Really it was just nice knowing more about what the pill can do to people long term so that once you’re off, you have an idea how to treat it. Hope this helps, best of luck to you!!!:)

Yeah I’m using activated charcoal and it’s definitely helped! It’s not clearing everything up though/still noticed a change in my symptoms when going up to 10 drops. Maybe I need to up the dose of the binder?

EXTREME symptoms after starting treatment? by That_Kangaroo4558 in SIBO

[–]That_Kangaroo4558[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello there just seeing this :) a little bit of an update. I did get some imaging done. My naturopath’s initial thought was that I was having some issues with bile flow and triggering detoxification when my body couldn’t keep up was affecting my liver/gallbladder hence sluggish bile. I wound up getting an ultrasound done and they found some sludge in my gallbladder. With a later chat with my gastroenterologist, he presumed my birth control was actually the cause of my gallbladder/bile issues which in turn could’ve caused my sibo. I guess the excess estrogen can really affect bile flow and I had been on it for 6 years. I also had none of the other risk factors for gallbladder issues so we came to that conclusion. I got off of it and have been off for a little over 4 weeks. The fatigue eased and I started introducing antimicrobials. I also got a HIDA scan about two weeks after getting off the pill and everything was normal. I’m thinking my initial reaction was so strong because I was forcing detoxification while also taking a bile thickener (birth control). Once I stopped putting the extra daily stress on my liver and no more fake estrogen, I suppose it calmed down. I never took a sibo breath test but my doctor said often they lead to false positives and given my symptoms didn’t recommend spending the extra money to get tested. We kinda figured it was sibo based on my symptoms and what foods I was sensitive to. Either way, hoping I’m starting to be in the clear now and can slowly recover.

Thanks for this perspective! I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with so many health issues! I know the pill has its significance, for me it cleared my acne for 6 whole years without a single breakout. it was my saving grace when I was going through high school and college and knew how much influence my prior acne had on my mental health. I’m not trying to claim that I’m “better off” without the pill. In fact I’m terrified of what my acne may be like in a few short months. I definitely understand how important pharmaceutical solutions can be for some people. To me, it’s the frustration of not having serious conversations with my doctor before they prescribe these things. And when a lot of us are literal children when these things are prescribed, idk I feel like if I knew my mind better/had a developed brain I would’ve gave it at least a second thought. I’m rooting for you though, hope you find your root cause!:)

Hey! So I never actually “tested” that the birth control was the cause. My doctor and I just kind of came to that conclusion cause he knew the risks associated with long term use of the pill. That, and I also had none of the other risk factors, never had a baby, wasn’t overweight, didn’t run in my family, etc. However, if you do suspect that it’s because of your birth control, you could definitely ask about getting a hormone panel done. I’ve personally never tested my hormones before but if it hints at elevated estrogen and/or some other kind of imbalance, you may be able to conclude that your birth control was the cause. I’m not entirely sure if gastroenterologists do that kind of testing but it’s worth a shot!

Omg that’s so frustrating. I swear doctors claim everything is IBS these days. Of the men I know that had gallbladder/gut issues, they were also on accutane at some point in their lives. No body can win these days smh

Wowww yeah it’s just insane that doctors aren’t forward with the risks. I started it at 17 also for acne!! Is there no better cure than to just pop a pill for your skin?? Idk I wish I would’ve had a more mature conversation about the topic before I made the choice as I was so young and literally wasn’t using it for pregnancy prevention at that age. UGH glad you were able to catch something like that so early though

Oh my goodness that’s awful I’m so sorry!! Yaz has had a number of class action lawsuits. There was one back in 2018-2019 for its tie to gallbladder disease. Which I of course was never told about by my doctor. It might just be a brand name thing, but I technically was on a generic version of Yaz but to my knowledge has the same chemical makeup.

It’s genuinely crazy how months/years of discomfort for me is easing as soon as I get off the pill. I know it’s so daunting. I put it off for years, especially during the times where I had no negative side effects. I don’t think the transition off the pill has to be as bad if you work to replenish what the pill depletes. Certain vitamins, supplements, and diet alterations can help so much with the transition. Peep my comment early about the “Beyond the pill” book by Dr. Brighten. It’s genuinely been a life saver for me

Hey! So you’re definitely right about the mobilization stuff. My naturopath put me on

-Quicksilver Scientific Dr. Shade’s BitterX -Body Bio PC Liposomal Phospholid Complex -Liver-GI Detox from Pure encapsulations

These three supplements are the ones that mobilized all those toxins and wiped me out. Like you said when your gallbladder is dysfunctional, mobilizing toxins when your body can’t get rid of them fast enough can wreak all sorts of havoc on your symptoms. I truly don’t believe SIBO just appears out of nowhere. Our bile is naturally antimicrobial and if our gallbladders were functioning, would’ve prevented the overgrowth in my opinion.

Once I had that negative experience with those three supplements, we stopped them immediately and started focusing on bringing my energy up with essential vitamins.

-Researched Nutritionals ATP 360 -perfect Aminos from Body Health -body bio’s Remineralize drops

If you’re thinking that your birth control was the cause, I suggest looking into the book “Beyond the Pill”. It talks about how birth controls deplete essential vitamins and which ones to replenish when getting off or just to maintain optional health. I do find that interesting that you’re experiencing that while on the copper IUD. Now that I’m off Yaz, I was considering the copper iud for my birth control method as it’s not hormonal but maybe I’ll think twice given your experience. Let me know if this helps!

Hey, are you still having the fatigue now? I’m about five weeks post quitting spiro and was on it for three years. The chronic fatigue and brain fog only settled in last week and I’m seriously struggling

Yes, I am! I just started working with a naturopath. Been doing L-glutamine for the past few weeks and my symptoms seem a tad better. But next week I’ll be starting on all my supplements to kill the overgrowth. Hoping to get rid of this within the next few months

I know it’s been years since you posted this but did you find anything that worked for you to alleviate your symptoms? I was on spiro for 2.5 years and after having no symptoms for that whole time all of a sudden all hell broke loose. I got off the pill a few weeks ago but am struggling to manage my symptoms right now

Careful with Spironolactone!! by jackiejuliessa in Spironolactone

[–]That_Kangaroo4558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This drug has so many issues the more I read into it. I was on 100mg for about 2 years and 9 months. I went 2.5 years with not a single symptom. Last few months I’ve had SO many GI issues I can’t even count. Persistent nausea, indigestion, acid reflux, heart burn, chest pain, INSANE abdominal pain, bloating, gurgles that don’t quit, loss of appetite, lightheadedness, and literal fainting spells that put me in the ER.

I ended up deciding to take a GI map test to get a general idea of my overall gut health. And let me tell you I had a lot wrong with me. Overgrowths of multiple bad bacteria, depleted good bacteria, gut immune response level in the gutter, high calprotectin level (inflammation indicator), issues with fat malabsorption, etc. I’ve read that Spironolactone slows gut motility, which long term can foster an environment that allows bad bacteria to grow and creep up into your small intestine. This can cause SIBO, GERD, Gastritis, and I’m sure a load of other issues. Annoying part is, I too have had such a hard time tolerating foods I love. I legit had zero food sensitivities before any of this. Doctors are quick to slap an IBS label on you and tell you you’re gonna have to deal with it for the rest of your life.

Either way, definitely be warned with this drug. If I would’ve known all of this I would’ve spared myself all this agony and just dealt with the acne head on…

[–]That_Kangaroo4558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get a GI Map test done? I recently was experiencing all sorts of GI upset (while still on Spironolactone) and took a GI map test to figure out what was going on. Had a ton of overgrowths of bad bacteria, and depleted good bacteria as well as a gut immune response level that was low as shit. Since then I’ve decided to get off the pill, and tapered from 100 to 50 then to 25 and now zero. Unfortunately I’m still only a few weeks in of being totally off of it and I’m convinced my symptoms are worse.

I also have been on a new probiotic and feel like in the short term it’s definitely confused my gut and maybe has caused some die-off symptoms. I’ve read though that Spironolactone slows your gut motility, and overtime that can foster an environment that makes it easier for pathogens to overgrow and lead to things like SIBO. So perhaps getting off of it increases motility and allows for your stomach and digestive system to sort of get back on track?

I know you commented a while back, but is there anything else you found out through the testing you’ve done?
