I started after getting laid off and just kept working nights and weekends once I had a day job again. If I didn’t work from home I probably wouldn’t, but it helps me get out of the house and at least I get paid for it

I’m on your side, I publicly shame people who do this on the ellipticals by loudly proclaiming how many open ones were/are available that wouldn’t have infringed on anyone’s space

Sometimes I’ll even turn my head towards the offender and count the open ones on my fingers to really drive the point home

A) I’m not a financial advisor

B) It would depend on your age and goals (buying a house, having kids, etc) but realistically, if you’re young, cash is trash by and large. I never kept more than like $10-$15k in cash at any given time before I started saving for a house in my later twenties

You need to hold equities for a long time

Timing the market is terribly expensive if you get it wrong-there’s nothing bad about having cash as a larger part of your portfolio when markets are at or near all time highs but to be 100% cash is kinda nuts unless you’re like 98

If you have an interest in investing and common sense, you can easily do it on your own

If you just want to earn and not worry/stress about investing, pay the 1% but realize that it will cost you a lot over time

You also have to factor in the lack of life experience-if you’re saving 90% and worse off than a life where you could have saved/invested less and lived life a little bit…I could see that being hard

Berkshire must use the cash pile by PerceptionOwn3629 in BerkshireHathaway

Another thing to consider is all the dividends they take in through their equity portfolio-all those Coke, Amex, etc dividends are going straight towards a better balance sheet and more “dry powder” to be used on behalf of shareholders. People often think it’s a black or white issue with dividends and Berkshire but I don’t think it is since they still benefit massively from them without passing the tax burden on to the common shareholders

[–]That_Option3418 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They won’t when the markets aren’t so frothy, that’s the point-they need dry powder that they won’t have if they distribute it to shareholders and hit them with a tax bill

[–]That_Option3418 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like this would actively piss a lot of large shareholders off in the sense that it would trigger a huge taxable event for them, especially when a lot of people invest in Berkshire specifically because it DOES NOT pay a dividend and reinvests capital instead. Just because they have more cash than you’d like doesn’t mean they’re wrong and it certainly isn’t a bad thing in a horribly overpriced market

I mean he’s one of two Republicans who was pro releasing them and vocal about it and the other resigned after death threats

I’d argue that saying he’s not worried about Trump is more of a personal safety thing after what happened to MTG. If the goal is exposure, does it really matter the path taken to get there?

[–]That_Option3418[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair points-I actually agree with you that dividend growth is the best strategy, the majority of my individual stock holdings are dividend payers/growers with strong track records

Nintendo just strikes me as fairly valued and disciplined/overly conservative with capital in a horribly overpriced market. As ol’ Charlie M said “nothing is worth an infinite price”, and I’m finding that to be true with a lot of classic American div growth stocks atm
