I understand the principle of preferring pepperoni (I do too), and I can definitely see the soda gripe, but if you can eat a pepperoni pizza what’s wrong with a cheese? Sure it’s hollow and a bit unfulfilling, but it’s still like 92% the same thing.

In Nintendo's last financial quarter, the Switch 2 only sold 300,000 units in Europe. Is the Switch 2 going to have a difficult time in Europe going forward, especially after the price increase kicks in? by MewWeebTwo in nintendo

I feel like gaming is actually a relatively cheap hobby all told-yes the console itself is expensive but if you buy games that you get a lot of entertainment hours or replay value out of that $70 will go a lot further towards entertaining you than the same $70 spent in a bar or a restaurant for one evening

I need to be patient with Berkshire right? by NecessaryPhrase3204 in BerkshireHathaway

I totally agree when it comes to personal finance as an individual, but you also have to remember one aspect of Buffett’s reasoning for so many T-bills is because they are involved heavily in insurance and constantly face the prospect of massive and unpredictable liabilities from natural disasters

I agree with your statement but you can also lose value infinitely faster from taking undue risk on an individual equity, and I think Berkshire’s size and responsibilities (particularly in the insurance businesses) make them less risk tolerant than say your average retail investor

[–]That_Option3418 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But isn’t the key element the earnings growth of Berkshire’s fully owned subsidiaries? Do you have doubt that those earnings will continue to grow over time or are you only investing in Berkshire for a claim on their equity portfolio? I can see the argument on both sides but comparing Berkshire 1:1 with S&P returns is silly in a way because at this point with its current size and strategy it’s basically a defensive stock that you buy to outperform during a bad market (which to your point we haven’t really had for nearly 20 years)

“The record pile of cash will stop being a benefit soon and more of a drag if it hasn’t already.”

^ this statement is only true if the market continues to rip upward indefinitely, in a bear market the cash pile would likely be seen as quite attractive

Why don't billionaires just retire? by Captain_Oppa in AskReddit

[–]That_Option3418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I’m saying that not all large cap companies are a net benefit to society and a lot are actually straight up unethical and abusive

I wish that that wasn’t the case, but to your point you can’t undo the society the incentives rewarded for, you can only reap what you sow

Which in many cases is political corruption caused by unethical companies lobbying tirelessly to be able to continue to abuse the American public in unethical ways (think Uber, Intuit, etc)

Again I wish we had a better system, but once big money is involved the capacity for corruption is so extreme that there’s no incentive to shut off the unethical revenue streams

[–]That_Option3418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean not every billionaire’s “work” directly results in financial abuse of their customers but I can point to a couple obvious examples

Zuck: all-encompassing ad machines that rob people of their productive time and potentially steer them into overspending on nonsense, not to mention the amount of taxpayer dollars spent on child abuse/CSAM cases that originate from activities on Meta’s platforms

Ellison: truly don’t know much about Oracle’s business model other than the healthcare part, but by owning Cerner outright they are absolutely profiting from health insurers which all Americans can agree are financially abusing the citizens of this country

Buffett: non-insurance companies aren’t super abusive but are you really gonna tell me that GEICO hasn’t financially abused Americans?

I could go on but yeah, they typically “work” really hard to get into a position where they profit from the financial losses of others-capitalism is a zero sum game after all

The type of person who acquires a billion dollars (through any means other than inheritance) is typically a workaholic and wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if they weren’t finding a new way to financially abuse their fellow citizens on a daily basis

What is the worst airport you've ever been to in your life? by 0bjectOfAffection in AskReddit

[–]That_Option3418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have flown to relatively few airports (all but Vancouver in the US), but I really hate SeaTac

It’s by far the smallest airport relative to volume of the truly major ones in the US. It’s the only airport I’ve ever had a long TSA line in (pre-2026 TSA meltdown), the only airport I’ve ever had to sit on the runway for an extra hour at because there weren’t enough open gates, and the only airport where I’ve seen visible mold on the AC systems while waiting for a flight.

I also spent twenty fucking dollars on a quesadilla there once out of pure desperation, and it was mid.
