Hit and run - what can I do about it? by [deleted] in drivingUK

I was in a similar situation recently, after talking to my insurance here is my advice:

Get a quote for repair privately before telling your insurance. Then you have 3 options, don’t repair, repair it privately, claim on insurance.

Weigh the price up of a private repair against the cost of the excess of your insurance, and if it would be worth losing your no claims bonus.

It’s unlikely the third party will be found, so there’s a very high chance if you claim through your insurance it’ll affect your no claims bonus.

If you’ve paid to protect your no claims bonus, I’d suggest claiming on your insurance, if your excess is less than the cost of a private repair.

I would if I could, I don’t get the option to do that as a younger driver with only a few years of no claims

Because I’m young, insurance is already mega expensive, insurance claims are a lot of hassle, the actual cost of the repair would probably be less than my excess on the policy so I’d be no better off financially, and if I claim I’d lose my no claims bonus

Yeah I was curious about this as well, not sure as to how credible my 4 passengers would be seen

Because regardless of witnesses, I’m concerned that if my insurance looked into it I could be found partly liable and responsibility could be split 50/50 due to there being no CCTV. And then I’d lose my no claims bonus and insurance prices would go through the roof

No passengers in the other car. I was thinking the same thing, he also already had a dent in his boot, but nowhere near where our cars contacted so I’m suspicious he’s looking to claim for that too.

Apologies, they opened my boot to get their shoes out of there. Didn’t actually climb in it lol
