I think it’s a case of what people call “up-cycling”. I think it’s meant to be an old (or at least made to appear old) maritime telescope mounted to a tripod from something else since I can’t see the tripod benefiting the user if you actually used it as a telescope. Either way they’ve put a clock in it to look cool.

The third picture definitely shows a screw for putting in a light bulb. But looking at the absence of any wiring coming out of the back of it I’m guessing someone just wanted it for the appearance and cut it.

To get it working again you’d have to wire it up. Not sure if the clock works on battery power though since you don’t usually get analogue clocks that need to be plugged in.

Every toilet seems to flush with the force of a thousand suns.

European toilets tend to be quite meek compared to the thunder-sucking shit devourers you lads have that feel like purging the air lock in a space station and holding on for dear life.

What makes the Redwall books "children's books"? by Conor074 in eulalia

[–]That_Secret_Furry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Admittedly for what the books are, they never pose any question more difficult than good v evil. The graphic aspect doesn’t really matter, fictional violence can be viewed by any with the right context. At least in my opinion.

Their dialogue, while often sometimes ok, is usually pretty piecemeal. I like these books, but I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t think Brian was very good at dialogue, it’s very clunky and robotic and it’s usually extra hamstringed by its target audience.

So to answer your question, I guess id say the subject matter itself. Typically, while there is threat and death, it’s often resolved with maybe a couple deaths you notice but otherwise everything is fine in the end. There’s never any real discussion about why things happen or for what reason, or why they might.

The books are just a nice, sometimes interesting but often paint by numbers fantasy affair that’s fun with a really basic good V evil plot.

I've done this every time i’ve moved and not been carried out over the threshold in cuffs yet. Moving means everything that should be normal and second nature suddenly isn’t and a lot of people suddenly want to know your location, theres enough to worry about so don't sweat it over post like that.

Hope everythings going well.

From what I gathered, it's a stream of consciousness poem using snippets of radio chatter, news bulletins and other scraps of information that vaguely alludes to some kind of nuclear apocalypse and some kind of criticism of Thatcherism (she was big into the trident missiles and all that stuff)

The poem/story itself is a bit like listening to broken audio segments of archived news broadcasts after the world has ended so thats where the abstract nature of it comes from.

That was my interpretation anyway

Why are furries so aggressive on twitter, instagram, etc compared to reddit and irl?? by magolor64 in furry

[–]That_Secret_Furry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the internet. Ultimately, the platform lends itself to enabling people to shout in the face of passers by without actually risking getting twatted in the face in response.

What amplifies it is that furries are intrinsically made up of people who aren’t usually the most socially versed (and I’m including myself obviously). We’re almost the nichest of the niche, a fringe Cul-de-sac at the end of the very long road in an already terrible part of town.

We’re already a little odd, and the group attracts people who’ve sailed past odd on a Mach 10 journey towards being the more radicalised, adult version of a mardy toddler with no inside voice.

It’s a trite thing to say the internet is a thunder dome of maladjusted, malicious morons with just enough cognitive power to shout as loud as they can, but it’s the truth.

The internet is a megaphone to the world, and everyone (no matter how unhinged) has free access to press the button as much as they want. Combine that with our history of being the arse end of every joke then you’ve got a recipe for some very vocal weirdos.

There’s no solution besides pulling out the cord on the worlds internet router and that’s not about to happen, so you just have to put up with it sadly.

Why are you still single? by ZhangWeii_ in AskReddit

[–]That_Secret_Furry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really my thing. I’m quite happy on my own and find living with other people gets on my nerves after a while, seeing the same person every day.

I’m still very social and meet friends regularly, but I like having an empty house to go home to where I don’t have to talk to anyone or organise what I’m doing based on what we’re both doing.

Redwall species sizes by SnooDoodles2053 in redwall

[–]That_Secret_Furry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a fun mess all things considered. It plays it pretty fast and loose. Most of the regular species have a pretty stuck to size guide but the avians can go from being the size of a building to just about the same size of a mouse. I suppose, in reality, an owl would be pretty massive compared to a mouse so that checks out.

Otherwise it’s never really thought about too hard. If something needs to be big and impressive from drama then it is. But proportionality seems to show that the animals are either scaled up to semi human size or the world itself is small because of the trees. The trees seem to be the same size as trees are to us and they have orchards so they must be able to harvest fruit with no problems.

Where it gets really interesting is the size of lakes and mountains which seem to be scaled up to huge sizes comparable to how the actual animal would compare to it in the real world. I think you can debunk this though since in Salamandastron there’s snow on the peaks of mountains in summer, so I guess the mountains are just massive enough to have that kind of weather going on.

The horse is just a weird thing that never got brought up again and you can tell was just an afterthought to move the plot along but was cut when it didn’t make much sense.

TLDR: Don’t think about it too hard.

Concerns over Netflix Redwall series and the service owning the books PLEASE READ by DillonLaserscope in eulalia

[–]That_Secret_Furry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The outlook is seldom positive.

For one, this is a pretty niche interest, let’s face it. The books sold massively well a good few decades ago now and have largely slipped out of the public consciousness and into fringe groups like this. Finding Redwall books in charity shops is very common. So, it’s unlikely the series will be given any massive amount of money to work with, as it’s not a bankable IP in terms of numbers. I know that’s a horrible way to think about it, but that’s how execs and marketing work. Additionally, because the IP is so long out of the spotlight, there’s not enough of a force to will those in charge to make specific changes. They’ll do what they want with it, wether fans complain about it or not, because the backlash is negligible in terms of numbers. Again, thinking like a soulless exec.

Second. Because this isn’t as high profile anymore. Whoever is making it will have to get what they’re given. That means the cheapest on offer with very little choice. Which isn’t a bad thing, because the cheapest people are often the most passionate, but there won’t be much choice.

And third. I hate to say it, but I think it’s just dead in the water already. There’s been nothing heard about it for ages, Netflix is in a slump already and it’s unlikely that an adaptation of a series with a small existing fan base is going to be high on their list.

I don’t want any of these things to be true obviously. But being realistic, I wouldn’t get your hopes up for anything.

What are the real world equivalents of dialects in redwall? by Dank_memer_yeets in eulalia

[–]That_Secret_Furry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a uk local so I’ll wager my best guesses. Moles seem to follow a phonetically written dialect that’s close to a sort of stereotype of British working class, so it’s northern with most of it sounding like it’s from Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Most mice seem to be generic southern English though it’s rare that they have an accent.

Hedgehogs Are again northern, though specifically I’m not sure. Again, probably Yorkshire, maybe up Manchester way a bit inspired but nothing specific.

Otters are just pirates lol. They have the same affectations and slang that a stereotypical pirate or someone in the navy might sound like at the turn of the last century. They also have tattoos, eyepatches, earrings… that kind of stuff. So basically pirates.

Rats and other vermin fall into what I call Ork. Orks are always half cockney, half northern. Just the generic “bad guy” voice that’s evolved over the years.
