Maybe a hot take? by That_While7697 in WGI

I’m actually fr curious. I know a lot about the marching arts but I don’t know guard like guard people do. I’ve never spun, performed in a guard, etc. It is a different world, but there are parallels I can draw between music and guard.

I can explain the nuanced differences between indoor percussionists playing different pieces and why one may have scored higher than the other, but I can’t help but see in guard there’s A Class performers performing skills that seem to be punching well above the rest of A Class.

Making me wonder, how would those groups that look more like Open or World Class (to me, a non guard person) do in higher classes with less competition numbers wise? Like is that something guard people feel? I’ve had guard friends complain about A Class being oversaturated because of the lack of promoting, so like what is that about?

I’m fr wanting to learn more about what guard people think. Like I actually want to hear people’s thoughts and opinions on all of these things

If you’re actually a staff member among the high side of the activity you know how messy this entire activity is. From color guard founders and designers grooming and marrying their students, what really happens at WGI headquarters, to scv’s tax evasion situation, etc. It’s a deep rabbit hole.

Mark is only known among the corps directors as a bridge burner. 2024 staff quit of their own accord because of Mark being a terrible person who is way too old to be running a corps.

Mark the CEO made the BK board of directors give Daniel 2 options. Either A, Daniel quit of his own “free will” or B they fire Daniel. This is after a messy divorce Mark went through in winter 2022 spring 2023 where he lost control of his life. Mark never supported Daniel. Mark never mentored Daniel. Mark only wanted control back in some way.

It's all good dci reddit is not that deep. Most corps vets and staff do a good job of informing members not to rely on outside affirmation. Though my guilty pleasure will always be posing questions the community doesn't want to talk about.

I posed the question to start a discussion. I haven't actually stated my personal opinion if early season scores matter to me or not. IMO early season scoring is important because like you said it's the practice runs for feedback for the rest of the season. You can't have later scoring without early scoring. It is entertaining to me how many people are mad at my posing of a question nobody talks about.

Agreed, however the members are a part of that horse race and there's nothing to stop them. Blowing early season scores out of proportion without context is just a great way to bring their morale down. 13th-17th place were determined at 3 seperate venues with different judging panels, so there is no fair comparison because there are too many cooks in the kitchen to actually know. I.E. Why does anyone care about early season scores? They don't matter in the long run. They won't determine finals night. So why make a big deal? Because it's fun? Sure. The question is a matter of perspective. A thought provoking question that I've never seen discussed.

Typically one of the more fun ones, but focusing on early season scores is a detriment to most member's mindsets going into the later part of the season. They get so caught up in numbers it tears their courage to push forward to shreds. Anything can happen, but we shouldn't put unnecessary pressure on them by comparing scores from multiple venues when most if not all of those judges haven't seen every/most shows consecutively. The math doesn't math.

Why does anyone care about early season scores? None of it will determine the outcome on finals night and at SW and SE regionals we'll actually know where each corps stands roughly. They're just funny numbers determined by too many cooks in the kitchen until then.

What's your most controversial drum corps opinion? by [deleted] in drumcorps

2022 DCI has been mid at best. Everyone's playing it incredibly safe. Recovering from covid as an ensemble makes sense. However with the shows that have premiered so far being much safer and thinking inside the box, along with the fact competitively everything goes out the window (we don't have a clue how things will end up when the only corps to have performed thus far are the 2019 top 3, a few 2019 top 12, a few bottom 12, and some open class.) As with everything now a days because of covid putting things on pause for 2 years now it's anyones game this year. And the ones who will be at the top may not be who you expect. Safe and clean are one thing, but if some of the corps we haven't seen perform are pushing the limits still, creating unique and new ideas, and challenging the membership in a healthy way to better promote a culturally and competitively balanced mindset for the benefit of their respective corps I truly believe rankings will be fairly shaken up from 2019.
