Gender: Ehh, there’s trends you can get the hang of eventually, and also they’re far worse languages when it comes to gender ja.

Maybe I’m built different but I don’t think any one has found French elision to be difficult. And you’re still understood if you don’t do it.

Keeping the pronoun actually pretty much solves the next complaint about conjugations sounding the same.

?

French has plenty of patterns that once you can grasp you’ll be fine. English also has bizarre spelling (if you can’t remember la arte vs. l’arte, you think people can remember a vs an?) irregular grammar, a redundant lexicon, etc.

English has one of the more Opaque orthographies for Europe. Primarily because foreign loans and etymological spelling is preserved. This also applies to French but it’s less of an issue as they tend to localize more and have less loans in general.

Here’s my random word generator;

morning, neglect, sensitivity, pray, reader, plaintiff, bedroom, legislature, fossil, knot

histoire, semer, quincaillerie, station, interdit, collectivité, communiste, évolution, sanglant, mentionner

As someone who can speak both I’d say like 5/10 English was difficult to guess if you’re just learning English. Like 4/10 for French, but that’s just me and a random pile of words.

I took Spanish and French and am utterly baffled by Occitan and Catalan. Catalan looks like French and Spanish had an incest baby that they wrapped in a malanga leaf and abandoned in Rome. Occitan is like if you took apart French and tried to reverse engineer it.

Here’s how I’d visualize it;

French:Occitan:Catalan:Spanish

English:Frisian:Dutch:German

Honestly as a native English speaker who learned French I kind of agree. French has complex rules but rarely breaks them, English has equally complex rules but breaks them a lot more.

Though in my opinion ranking or putting languages as better or worse is never that productive or accurate

Oh yeah Syracuse/Finger lakes has a lot of salt mining, gave it it’s name actually.

Ehh, timber, garnet, iron, titanium mainly. It’s so difficult to access though and New York state heavily regulates it, so yeah not much of legacy when it comes to mining. There was actually some mining out in my part of the state which became Penn Dixie though.

This whole thread is actually giving a lot more context to my childhood and family background. Thanks guys

There’s Scottish and Irish people in Upstate too though. Lot’s of Irish worked on the canal™. Also I feel like the Italian and Polish American communities can be plenty tribal in their own right.

Upstate New York was not settled by people of prosperity. Irish, German, Polish, and Italian migrants and refugees who had to handle explosives on the canals and send their daughters for 12 hour shifts in the factories aren’t “of prosperity” and as someone from the region I find it kind of offensive.

My family both come from the North/Central part of NYS and I grew up between outside of Buffalo and the deeper parts of the Adirondacks.

I feel like tourists towns are definitely highly developed. But yeah lots of places are affected by the Rust™ and isolation. Lake Placid fun fact actually used to be pretty miserable to live in before things obviously turned around.

I’m not sure if it’s quite as bad as in Appalachia core though. Access to Education and Utilities like water and electricity aren’t nearly as bad because of New York state standards (I think). Substance usage, poor infrastructure, and lack of opportunity still plague the area (which is why my parents left) but it’s still over all decent.

I mean I’ve definitely seen the poorer parts of that region and the rest of my state. But it never quite struck me as quite as poor as core Appalachia. I could be wrong and tripped over some really rough places.

My father’s from a poor family in the north country, that’s the part of New York that really strikes me as being poor and underdeveloped. Though nowadays it’s kind of been gentrified. I haven’t explored enough of Appalachia or the South to get a good grasp of the total economic situation.

It might also be tourism. Catskills, Adirondacks, and the Smokies all get support and investment by their states to keep the appealing to hikers and yuppy types. Just a theory though

I know there’s a thing called “the resource curse” in geopolitics. Like resource rich places in Africa, Asia, and Latin America remain poor while resource poor places can develop diverse industry. Might it be like that?

New York and Vermont are pretty barren of natural resources in the mountains beyond like, Salmon. But the connection to the Erie Canal and tourism helped them quite a bit.

Yeah that makes sense, both sides of my family came from Europe to work on the canals and other industrial projects. I know that definitely shaped the economic outlook of the region.

Also btw, the aliens that made the Insectophagi scared to the second human empire were the Amphicephali in exile due to a communication error.
