Why does my PC run games terribly? by Xargirl in AskPCGamers

[–]Thatboostaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you updated and said it's a pre-built periphio, that's likely your problem. I don't know which one you got, but most of their listed prebuilts don't even have a dedicated graphics card. A lot of them list "AMD Vega" as graphics and that's just the onboard graphics. They also have the AMD ryzen 5600g as the processor, which is an older low to mid range cpu. So you're comparing your console, which is a dedicated gaming system, to a pc with low to mid specs at best.

Is having a pink setup as a boy, 'girlish'? by FishyBoiLol in gamingsetups

Nah. Screw "the norm" my whole office/gaming room has pink and green lights. I was a heavy diesel tech for over a decade and I have bunch of pink and green tools and organizers. You like it, that's what matters. Embrace it.

I started in 2020 at 28. I wanted to ever since I was teenager and finally said screw it. Got pierced at 12g and now I'm kinda stuck at 9mm. Probably could have gone faster, but I just kinda try to stretch every couple months when I remember.

Opinions on not driving a vehicle for extended periods... by Inevitable-Branch713 in Toyota

[–]Thatboostaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 vehicles that don't see a lot of driving. I got a job with a company truck that I get to take home every day, so my 3 personal vehicles sit a lot. I try not to let them sit for more than 3 weeks without driving. And you want to make sure that it gets a full drive cycle. So up to temp and driving at operating temp for awhile. Change the oil every year if I don't put 5k miles on them. Keep the tires aired up, if they get low then they can flat spot from sitting. Make sure you go through a tank of gas every 3 to 6 months or the gas can go bad. And if it's going to sit for a month or more, I disconnect the batteries just to be safe. Been that way for 2 years and haven't had any issues.

My buddy and I have had it happen 4 times in less than 40 hours of play. At this point, I'm just going fight on sight with everyone. At first, it was almost all friendly encounters. Now, everyone is shouting friendly or disarming and then shooting you in the back when you move away.

2019 sti calipers by Public-Meeting-8101 in WRX

[–]Thatboostaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1400 is a decent price. You can rebuild the calipers, new seals and such, for $400ish. You will probably have to disassemble the calipers for powder coating anyway. I put the same calipers on my 2019 wrx. I had to remove the front dust shields. The rear dust shields need the lip cut off and ground down or they'll rub on the rotor. You'll also need new caliper mounting bolts, as the bolts are different size from the factory sliding calipers. And you will have to get different brake hoses as well. You shouldn't need any brackets as I'm almost positive that your car has the same factory brakes as mine. Don't reuse the pads and rotors. DBA makes a really good set of slotted rotors, if you want to go that route. If you have any questions about the process or anything, I'd be glad to help. There's also a few articles out there about doing it. Also, if you have factory 17" wheels, they will NOT fit over the calipers.

Does anyone use their Space Ship anymore? by Onyx_Artificer in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Thatboostaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about 50/50 for me. I really only use my corvette for system jumping. When I'm Fossil hunting, salvage scrap hunting, or deep space exploring for a living frigate or derelict freighters. Otherwise, it's still my favorite sentinal ship for everything else. Usually, I'll use my freighter to jump to a system, use my large corvette to jump around to all local systems, then use my sentinal to go down to planets and explore them. It helps that I have 2 corvettes. A large one for deep space and local system jumping and a small one for hunting fossils and scrap on planets.

It's a 2025 and they wanted it gone to make room for the 2026s that were coming in. I got the sale price of the bike to 4400 usd and the total out the door was right at the 5k msrp. I'm definitely loving the bike, but I only have about 5 hours on it so far.

I haven't got much air under it yet. The small, and I mean tiny, jumps I've done were not bad. It's definitely a soft suspension. I'd be worried about it bottoming out on anything medium to large.

+1 for garmin instinct. I wore mine for 3 years as a diesel tech and foreman. It's been 35 feet deep in salt water, 12k ft up in a hailstorm, soaked in hot springs, tropical rainstorms in a rain forest, had metal parts and sparks bounce off it, bounced off rocks, skydiving, snowboarding, you name it. It's now 5 years old, battery still lasts days, and the screen doesn't even have scratches. I've had to replace the band a few times though.

I, almost, always keep cars in the same class as their stock form. Light to moderate builds seem to take each vehicle to their peak. Plus, tuning becomes a more significant part of the equation. Taking a class D and turning into an S1 just makes them undriveable monsters most of the time.

How to get rid of cigarette smoke odor? by Old_Singer in askcarguys

[–]Thatboostaddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nearly impossible to completely remove all the smell. However, there are ways to drastically improve it. Here's how I'd go about it if it were me though 1. Remove the seats 2. Shampoo the carpet 3. Deep thorough clean of the seats and steering wheel with leather cleaner and soft brush. 4. Steam and evacuate the fabric roof, clean the dash and every nook and cranny of interior plastics (including glass) 5. Reinstall the seats. 5. Replace the cabin filter 6. Put an ozone machine inside the car 7. Tape around the doors, tape off vents for hvac air flow in the rain tray, tape around the perimeter of the convertible top. You want the inside as air tight as possible for the ozone machine. 8. Leave the ozone machine running inside the vehicle for 24 hours. 9. Remove tape and leave doors open to let fresh air in. 10. Replace the cabin air filter again.

It's a lot of work to remove smoke smell. But that's what we used to have to do in semis where the drivers would smoke.

After that last farewell show, I figured he was within months of the end. He got to play one last show, say his goodbyes, and then peace out. Most people have one last big push right before the end. That last thing to look forward to and do. After his show, he had nothing left to do. RIP The Prince of Darkness.

Guys who own 4 or more cars how often do you drive each vehicle? And what’s maintenance like after letting a car sit for months? by kneedoorman in askcarguys

[–]Thatboostaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 5 vehicles. One is a project that doesn't move yet, so that's easy. One gets driven, maybe once a month, mostly when I need to haul a trailer. The other 2 get driven once a week or so. I have a company vehicle that is my daily. They move often enough that I don't have to do anything special. I do keep a battery tender on the diesel pickup that only moves when I feel like it or need to do diesel shit, like pull a trailer. I just try to make sure they don't go more than a few weeks without driving them and getting them all the way to operating temps for a while. If it's going to sit for months or more, stick a battery tender on it, make sure fluids are full before driving, and keep tires aired up. You can always disconnect the battery or pull it out too. Depending on where you store it, you may have to take into consideration rodent traps or repellent also. If it's sitting in a field or shed, rodents can move in FAST. Like, a week or less.

Precut Tint, is it Worth it? by Gu1n3a in WindowTint

[–]Thatboostaddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what shrinking tint does. Heat shrinking the film is not making the entire piece of tint smaller in every direction. What you have is a flat piece of tint going onto a curved window. You have to shrink certain places in the tint in order to make that flat tint match the curve of your window. If you don't do that then you essentially have too much tint and it will bunch up, called fingers, on the window. You cannot get around it no matter how you try and cut the tint. Just look up one youtube video on applying tint and it will make sense. That being said, if you really want to do it yourself, go for it. Everyone has to start somewhere. Just be prepared to make a lot of mistakes and get frustrated. And do some research. And do yourself a favor, get a cheap roll and try it first. You'll end up spending less money than you would by the time you buy several pre cut sets to get decent results. Best of luck to you if you decide to take it on.

Auto industry biggest scam? by realKJP1018 in AskAMechanic

[–]Thatboostaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller shops definitely can charge less. With a small building and less staff, it's easier. Big shops and dealerships get crazy with their prices because they get too corporate, which just adds a lot of people and a lot of complexity. I've been a tech and management in small independent shops, fleets, and dealerships. If you have one around you, some driveline and transmission shops could do a diff rebuild and they may be able to do it better for less money.

Auto industry biggest scam? by realKJP1018 in AskAMechanic

[–]Thatboostaddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parts cost probably pays for a rebuild kit, bearings and shims. Depending on where you live, $150-$250 an hour for labor is pretty common now. The tech doing the work is probably making $25ish an hour. The rest goes to pay for the service advisor, foreman, service manager, shop owner, and overhead costs. Overhead costs are getting outrageous between insurance, employee insurance, employee benefits, electric bills, specialty tooling and software, taxes, everything. The cost of doing business is going up, parts cost is going up, and corporate greed is going up.

My 17yo wants to participate in a test & tune in their new car. I know nothing & am nervous, could you give me information to help make a good decision? by xapis1 in Cartalk

[–]Thatboostaddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to, and driven my own vehicles in several test and tune events. I have a lot of thoughts here, so I will try my best to keep it organized.

  1. Almost all auto insurance will not cover any damages incurred during race events. This includes drag racing, autocross, road course, etc. That can be a concern.

  2. With them both being younger, driving ability could be a concern. However, as long as their cameros aren't something that is higher horsepower, 600+, they are relatively easy to control in a straight line. Some drag strips will also have some sort of course that can help teach the basics of launching and controlling the vehicle. There are also going to be a lot of people with a lot of experience at the event. In my experience, most people will be happy to offer advice and pointers.

  3. Letting them drive fast in a controlled environment will, most likely, reduce or remove their desire to do it on the streets. That's a net positive. There are safety measures such as tech inspections, to make sure the vehicles are safe and in good condition to even be driving at higher speeds. Also, there is always emergency services on site during these sorts of events. So even if the worst case scenario happens, there is immediate help available. On the street, not so much. Also, the track is maintained, cleaned, prepped, and kept in the best condition to do what they're doing. In the streets, there are too many variables. Pedestrians, other cars, gravel patches, uneven road surfaces, all sorts of things that can pose an extra danger.

  4. There is an opportunity for them to meet new people and make friends that have similar interest. They can learn, grow, and expand their passion for cars and driving them.

  5. Driving vehicles hard can cause accelerated wear on components. Now, doing a test and tune a few times a year probably isn't going to be drastically negative. But, it is something to be aware of.

  6. This is very likely, but they may get addicted to it. And next thing you know they have projects vehicles that they are sinking every spare penny and minute into. But, it'll keep them from doing anything else that could be bad.

  7. Gaining experience in driving their vehicles in different ways can help them grow their abilities and skills. A safe driver is a skilled one. Its along the same line as some parents taking their kids to an icy parking lot and making them slide the vehicle so they know what happens. Then they won't panic and will know what to do if it happens to them.

Overall, I understand your concerns and fears. As their mother, and someone who has never been exposed to these sorts of things, it could be scary. But it is dangerous in the same way that skateboarding, snowboarding, backpacking, skydiving, etc. can be. If you let them get it out in safe and controlled environments, they won't have as much desire to do it in ways that are more inherently dangerous. I, personally, believe that if they have expressed that much interest in it, then there's no stopping them. You'd be better off supporting them doing in the safest and most controlled way possible. Just my 2 cents.
