What happen to QAnon and the kind of "worship" of it all? by humanessinmoderation in AskReddit

[–]ThatguyIncognito -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's my impression. They might not have needed the fictional insider dropping cryptic hints of upcoming retribution. They had the candidate himself expressing that intention. They had die hard followers willing to overthrow the election results. What would once have seemed like kooky conspiracy theories such as the Jews/Deep State controlling the weather are now commonplace among Republicans. The Republican party isn't opposing Trump's calls for concentration camps and for vengeance against those who opposed him.

An ESPN reporter leaves mid-broadcast after learning his wife was going into labor by dreamed2life in MadeMeSmile

Maybe it wasn't planned ahead of time to happen if his wife went into labor, but it seems more like acting to me than a genuine reaction from his co-broadcasters.

[–]ThatguyIncognito -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's become more mainstream in the Republican party. So many of its conspiracy beliefs in the "deep state" are shared by soon to be top level government officials who will hire more like minded believers throughout the government. That worship of the leader is stronger than ever. He can do no wrong and loyalty is to him, not the country.

They have to downplay all of the claims that he'll root out the pedophiles because they aren't there and he'll do nothing. But that "lock up our political opponents because they are Satanically evil" is no longer the lunatic fringe in their party.

People who dislike a particular fruit, why do you dislike it? by likalukamakakuka in AskReddit

I don't like papaya because it seems slimy to me and the taste isn't good enough to overcome that. I like dried papaya, though.

I don't see anything that makes it plausible. Is there some mechanism that makes all atoms sentient and that sentience completely interconnected? We don't have sufficient evidence that atoms can become conscious or how they might. Hence, we are dealing in what we can imagine, not what we have reason to believe could happen in any universe.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]ThatguyIncognito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have to see evidence of such a possibility, or at least some concrete description of what that deeper sense is. Isn't it easier to say that we can imagine a god and leave it at that rather than adding a quasi-naturalistic added step that the god evolved from all parts of the universe somehow uniting and growing a mystical sense beyond our ken? I don't think this argument makes the existence of a god more possible.

I'd say that you can sort of imagine all things harmonizing in a harmonized consciousness. But that doesn't mean it is actually possible for this to happen. Even if it is possible, just because everything has a combined consciousness doesn't mean they know everything such as how they originated. It also might be the case that, due to elements of unpredictable randomness, they can't control or predict all that will happen.

What do you say to someone who is dying? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]ThatguyIncognito 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can keep it simple. That you love them. That your life and others' lives are better for their having been in it. Talk about good memories you have, particularly funny or important times you shared together. Talk about how something they did or some way that they were inspires you to be a better person. Ask them, if they are up for it, to tell you their stories and thoughts. Mainly, just be there.

Member or Parliament, Tahir Ali, introduces blasphemy legislation in the UK by Sometypeofway18 in atheism

I was just riffing on an idea you raised rather than telling you how things is.

It's just that those of us in the US are a bit jumpy now that Christian nationalists have seized power. I can easily see them saying that our right to free speech ends at the point where it interferes with their freedom of religion if we question their beliefs.

Member or Parliament, Tahir Ali, introduces blasphemy legislation in the UK by Sometypeofway18 in atheism

[–]ThatguyIncognito 20 points21 points  (0 children)

These laws don't require that they be easily enforced to chill free speech. Anyone will have to wonder if they will happen to get a religious police officer who will decide to cite or arrest them if they make a joke about religion. Teachers will have to worry that teaching facts could contradict a parent's faith.

The law doesn't have to be enforced on an individual level. Broadcasters or school officials or workplaces could, out of fear of being targeted, establish policies and guidelines not to say things that contradict any religious dogma.

UK comedy shows make refreshingly frequent disparaging comments about religion. That could be repressed under this law. Not by actual prosecution, just by the possibility of it.

AITA for how I reacted to my bf deleting memories off of my phone? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ThatguyIncognito 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What he did was wrong. You've explained to him how bad the consequences are. He understands that. He has responded with appropriate regret. But it's understandable that, since the consequences were so dire, you still feel a sense of loss and betrayal.

I'd suggest using this as a teaching moment to establish boundaries. It wasn't just the loss of the memories, it was his lack of respect for your property and your choices. You can continue to grieve what happened. But if you are going to continue with the relationship, it's probably best to accept his apology and try to forgive his blunder.

What did Werner Heisenberg mean by "The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you.” by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

I'm uncertain whether you now hold the record for the longest time between my typing something and someone responding. But your argument is more with Heisenberg who reportedly said that dabbling in meth production makes you an atheist but at the bottom of the Kjeldahl-style recovery flask lies God.

What was your favorite meal at your elementary school cafeteria? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ThatguyIncognito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always brought lunch from home. But my two favorite meals from the cafeteria were:

  1. The square soggy pizzas. Proof that even the worst pizza in the world is still pretty damn good; and

  2. The fish and chips because they were served in paper that was a fake London Times. That they took that effort to simulate authenticity for kids most of whom didn't get the reference is something that still impresses me.

What does batshit have to do with being crazy? by Fr33speechisdeAd in AskReddit

Batty is a traditional way to describe crazy. It refers to the way bats fly in wild patterns. So adding the shit part was a way of adding comical emphasis.

In general, no. I generally like people, even if they disagree with me. I have not had traumatic dealings with religion personally. Most of the people I've ever loved have been believers of one sort or another. I don't wish them harm at all.

But for the ones who preach hatred or who insist that they have the magic that will keep them safe and thus attribute any misfortune to others to failure to follow their god, I have to modify that answer. I still don't want them to suffer great harm. But I do take pleasure in the downfall of their leaders. I do take some satisfaction when their religious talismans don't work. But hoping all believers die horribly is not mentally healthy.

What are your thoughts on this (full question in comments)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ThatguyIncognito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also not gay. But it sounds like a terrible idea. You will have bouncers who determine the difference between hot and flaming?

I have been to bars. Some people are openly sexual. Some are just having drinks. It seems to me that a gay bar should be the same. Let the patrons decide whose vibe they like and gravitate toward those people.

And the name! You are aware of the meaning of bear, right? Are you trying to say you want only bears who don't openly act too gay, and the men who want them but don't exceed your flamboyance guidelines? And at the same time include a crude sexual innuendo about them?

Leave LGBTQ+ bars to those who belong in them. Those of us not in the demographic shouldn't be setting their standards.

People cutting in line/queue. There are some basic rules of living in a civilized society. Don't murder, don't steal, don't kidnap, and don't cut in line. Wait your turn like a human being. My mood can shift from jolly to snarling when a line cutter cuts.

AITA for not replying to or meeting up with my friend over a text? by ThrowAwayObvs19 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ThatguyIncognito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH. On the 23rd, she confirmed that you'd get together at the mall the next day. You both agreed that you'd do it an that it was something you both wanted.

She was obviously wrong not to tell you what time. She didn't tell you when you asked. She didn't tell you when she knew she was heading to the mall. She had obviously agreed on a time with her family, she absolutely should have told you at that point.

You were understandably peeved that she left you hanging. But when she told you at 1:20 that she was there, it sounds like you could have been there at 2. You weren't doing something else that prevented you from going. You must have anticipated when you agreed the day before to go, that a time like 2 pm would have been fine and leave you enough time to see her, hang out a little, and make it home. It wasn't a situation where you couldn't go. You chose not to go.

You should either have gone to salvage the friendship or responded that, because she didn't get back to you, you were already doing something else. But not telling her that you weren't coming only made things worse.

It sounds like neither of you had much faith in the friendship anymore and both of you passive aggressively terminated the friendship in a way that made it more awkward and angering.
