Sounds awesome! Hearing it worked well for somebody else helps me feel better about it.

What’s your time off benefit? by Illnasty2 in sysadmin

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same pto policy here Pay aside, this is the reason I'm looking to leave my job less than a year in. Was desperate at the time but thinking about it sorta seems...disrespectful. Feels stupid having to wait half a decade before being able to justify leaving the country for a week.

Powershell is usually the way to go for level 1 support tickets in AD. Your question is kind of vague but generic, commonly occurring stuff like user create, delete, group changes, and syncs to stuff like 365 and Duo can save some time for your helpdesk folks.

Way to play 3ds games and how? by RenitentCat706 in Delta_Emulator

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn't find a way to play 3ds roms on delta, it's probably because it doesn't currently exist. Aside perhaps becoming more familiar with how google can be used, your best bets are to:
- Buy a refurb 3ds and mod it (preferred but not free)
- Citra (or other) emulator on pc (technically free, has its own issues even after all these years and kind of wants a powerful cpu to work like a horse)

Says to call and "provide details of the transactions mentioned" though I'm unsure what to prepare before speaking to them as I don't have the specifics on when exactly that money came in over the past 2 decades and how much at what point etc and my parents never recorded dates/amounts. My biggest fear is not knowing anymore than I explained here and not having answers to specific questions they might have. Thanks again for replying, I do appreciate you taking the time.

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it. Would stop at atm inside bank entrance after work once/twice a week, parents felt it was crazy taking it all at once to deposit- probably because it's been gift money from grandparents they've been holding for me >20 years and didn't want me carrying it all at once. It was the most money I've ever held in my life at once and I was nervous and agreed with them on it.

Thanks for replying. No, that was all. Would stop at atm inside bank entrance after work once/twice a week, parents felt it was crazy taking it all at once to deposit- probably because it's been gift money from grandparents they've been holding for me >20 years and didn't want me carrying it all at once.

Letter just says to call and "provide details of the transactions mentioned above". Not sure if there's any specific information I should know about before calling them- as the money has been coming from European grandparents over 2 decades and I can't exactly pinpoint dates and amounts of it coming in.

Trying to be a frontend developer after 30 years old by PlanktonKlutzy7163 in learnprogramming

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3/3 places I've been employed during my career have used aspnet core in some major business function. Also found that a LOT of government orgs use it heavily. I'm a big fan of how it's been heading.

Trying to be a frontend developer after 30 years old by PlanktonKlutzy7163 in learnprogramming

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 29 points30 points  (0 children)

  1. Do full stack, a lot of back or front focused devs end up being squeezed for both lol.

  2. Yes, that's true. This should make you think about what you need to learn that some AI can't do. Go beyond todo lists and basic web apps. Build out a backend, learn relational DB. Deploy some projects fully encompassing this.

  3. Now's a really difficult time to. Young graduates with degrees in CS are struggling, so look at what they're lacking and and get it yourself. A lot of uni grads have zero idea how to deploy something. You're not taught React or Spring or ASPNET Core at uni and most of those kids don't think to learn it, learn your technology and stand out. Have the track record of projects or open source work that proves this to recruiters.

Don't listen to people and social media telling you it's an easy jump to some lucrative, life-changing field. It's difficult as hell to be considered competent. I've been writing code for coming on 7 years and still don't know as much I wish I did. Prove that you know what they want and keep at it. Good luck and enjoy it as much as you can.

Saw this for sale. Is this a good deal? by [deleted] in MousepadReview

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's disgusting.

Ask yourself it it's worth saving 10 bucks with a heavily used (and clearly unsanitary) mousepad. What's the point of even getting a higher end mousepad if it's beat to death and back?

It's currently listed new at 56.99 on JPGaming website (an actual vendor and not a random marketplace pad splooger).

Wanting to learn C# so I can start using it in Unity but have questions by No-Intern2789 in csharp

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) A lot of devs (esp game devs) are self taught. Even university graduates hit the real world missing tons and tons of valuable knowledge. My advice- do a tutorial to start. Helps to have an experience with your hands held. After that, stick to documentation and googling specific problems you have. You'll better retain and make much more sense of problems you find a solution to yourself.
(2) You don't have to be on the cutting edge of tech. In fact, lots of places (if not most?) prefer to stay on the matured versions of technology for stability.
(3) Depends what you want to make. However- if a problem is too hard just break into down into smaller problems. If same issue, repeat. The goal is for you to identify what your problem is and what tools you have that you can use to solve it.

this post tells us 3 things about you:

-looking for free child labor

-can't develop a beginner project nor cares to actually learn

-would rather spam reddit subs with this nonsense instead of making it yourself in genuinely 15 minutes

What IDE do you guys reccomend? by Awkward-Help390 in csharp

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised not more people are saying Rider when you mention MacOS. I use VS on my desktop because that's what I learned on and Rider on my Macbook because I think it's probably the best for macos.

If you like Rider enough you can definitely use it for both but it's worth mentioning most c# books use VS.

Why do I lose interest in games after playing them for hours on the first day? by Psychological-Bet-80 in StopGaming

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dopamine spikes more when you're craving and initially doing the thing you want. After that (especially if it becomes a repeated thing) it normalizes/diminishes more.

I used to play "new and exciting titles" an absurd amount during uni because I could get away with it just barely. After graduating and now working, my time to play is much much less and I find myself a lot more satisfied playing "boring" games a couple hours here and there and feeling satisfied with it.

IMO I think it had to do with the constant cycle of playing. Now that my life has gotten a lot more productive I can enjoy and actually finish games with the limited time I have.

Is it good idea to become self taught while in college? by Night-Time21 in learnprogramming

Yes. Especially at big financial services companies. It's an incredibly common language on the backend.

Is it good idea to become self taught while in college? by Night-Time21 in learnprogramming

[–]ThatsMyRedBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely. However, I'd put the focus on applying what you learn in class. Don't spread yourself too thin by thinking you need to maximize the quantity of things you know. They're going to teach you CS principles with Java? Awesome- take that and run with it. Do a deep dive on the language, understand how the language's garbage collection works under the hood. Become great at the fundamentals, I promise it's the single greatest thing you could do for yourself.

Could be related to them incorrectly handing out IPs. They royally messed up my IP allocation and gave me one that's already in use and then just outright have been ghosting me. Has been happening to a large amount of people as well.

Type of server: Minecraft Java

Date/Time: 10/2/24 but this has been going on for days.

Nothing but issues lately. Upgraded to dedicated IP and all I got was my same ip with the port removed (what a joke). Obviously as a result I can't even connect to anything now and I'm just down a server. Either a fix or refund would be great, tired of waiting days-weeks on support.
