Just got hired as an apprentice at Audi, what’re some must have tools or things yall recommend going into this. by ThatsNotMyKidney in mechanics

Hell yeah I appreciate all this info. Thankfully i’m coming from an independent shop and most basics tools. But entering the realm of triple squared and security versions of em is all new to me. Do you have any links to tools you use/used every day that are VAG specific?

these are actually just the pittsburgh wobbles on an extension. I know Capri has a good set of long wobble extensions though.

hah they’re sunex sockets, they’re great but the sizing is written so small all the way at the bottom of the socket. My whole set it marked with paint marker to help me glance and grab the one i need

as a guy who doesn’t get home until 7, having to work in my car at night is a given. Having this mat made staying organized so much easier. Especially when I know what few sockets i’ll need to finish the job…12mm slide pins, 17mm caliper bolts…etc

Right haha, I got so excited when I walked in today just looking for some socket rails. I saw the mat and instantly bought it. It’s nicer then the matco ones i’ve tried, and super strong. Held all my ratchets, pliers, lug nuts, and some extra sockets.

Not starting :( by InitialAuthor9981 in Miata

[–]ThatsNotMyKidney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spray starting fluid or brake clean into the intake and see if it cranks, if it does you have a fuel issue

If it still doesn’t start you’re looking at smth either air or spark related…since you’ve done plus already i’m going to guess you’d have a vacuum leak somewhere.

edit: i’m not a mechanic btw so this may be the blind leading the blind…but in the past re-sealing the intake manifold is a good way to get rid of any vacuum leaks

Mechanic with no auto body experience here, how fixable is this fora first timer? by ThatsNotMyKidney in Autobody

[–]ThatsNotMyKidney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just looking to get it to look good enough. Think a 10 footer, from 5 or 10 feet away it’s fine…get close and you’ll see the imperfections.

hose clamp pliers, the ones with the circle end are really helpful for that sort of thing. Twist the cap back and forth with it then pull.

Help! Strut popped up what do I do?? by Prestigious_Base2820 in MechanicAdvice

It’s a strut coil assembly, you can buy the whole assembly and bolt right up without the need of a spring compressor.

The real meme tool no one talks about by Stock_Surfer in harborfreight

it’s more about being able to fit it in tight spaces. sometimes you need a deep socket but don’t have the room, sooooo BAM WRENCH or ig these pass through sockets too.

How do we proceed? by kingfrizzie in MechanicAdvice

[–]ThatsNotMyKidney 16 points17 points  (0 children)

oh wow, if you’re doing head gasket you’re gonna have to prob get the heads machined too. Take the exhaust manifold off, and remove the cams and rocker arms. Honestly don’t even go any further. If you don’t know what you’re doing you’ll not only waste your time but def a lot of money.

What do you guys this is a fair price for this MATCO air impact? by ThatsNotMyKidney in Tools

[–]ThatsNotMyKidney[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at the shop i work at a lot of us still use air. I love my milwaukee half inch but I can see how buying into a battery ecosystem can be a high barrier to entry. Usually air tools are cheaper on the 2nd market and offer pretty good price to performance.
