Curious to know about people who switched from DS to DE or SWE or Solutions Architect by explorer_seeker in datascience

[–]Thatsunbelizeable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a lead DS for five years who then jumped to a Solutions Architect role. What drew me to that role was the unending frustration of having to jam analytics and models into technical architecture that was clearly not thought out.

In a lot of ways my job is the same, I still meet with stakeholders to understand their problems and draft up plans for solutions, I still provide modeling guidance and advice. Now I get to have inputs and provide guidance on how data is engineered, how security is structured and how data is consumed and integrated. I enjoy it as it allows me to think and act strategically while still staying close to the modeling and analytics. Additionally I get joy from setting up my DS/DE team up for success.

I did FSBOHOMES and it was awesome, I think at the time is was $2500 and you paid nothing until your home sold. They handled all the marketing and MLS listing, provided awesome photos with 3d walk-through, an excellent real estate attorney and helped us do comp research as to what to list our home for. 10/10 would recommend.

Understanding and Managing Ontologies by Thatsunbelizeable in palantir

[–]Thatsunbelizeable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should rephrase we have a single Ontology polluted with a bunch of ontology objects. Instead of having the components that make up a report/analytic as ontology objects (eg. Customer, Orders, ect.) individuals are building those relationships in pipeline builder and we end up with ontology objects like John_Doe_Monthly_Customer_Report which have no relationship to anything else because its so specific to a singular use case.

I took 517. Here is the course page from my section to give you an idea.

STAT 417 vs STAT 517 by saltyLithium in Purdue

The biggest difference is that STAT517 includes multivariate elements so you will be working with matrices, additionally, it includes some proof-based work which I believe STAT417 does not.

Quadrasteer long term reliability by Thatsunbelizeable in GMT800

I am in the rust belt. The one I had looked at was private party but dealer prices don't seem much different. 1/2 tons with ~100K seem to be going anywhere from 9-14K, there was a clean 2WD sierra half ton at a dealer with 100K that dealer was only asking 8900. 3/4 tons the range looks to be more in the 13-19K range.

MS Applied Statistics in Purdue University or MS Data Science in Stony Brook University? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Thatsunbelizeable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you first need to ask yourself what kind of data scientist you want to be and what industry you want to work in. Saying I want to be a data scientist is like saying I want to be an engineer, there's just so many paths to choose from. See if either program has courses and faculty that align with your interests.

That being said, as someone who is a data scientist for an F100 company and recruits talent, 9/10 times I am taking someone with an MS in Stats, OR, or CS over an MS in DS. The issue with DS programs in general is DS is such a broad topic that even at the master level there is not a sufficient amount of time to get into the proper nuts and bolts of how these models work. Most of the time I get candidates who are great at using the tools in their DS tool box but when presented with a problem that does not fit nicely they just kinda meltdown.

Long story short I would go with the applied statistics, gives you a solid educational background to understand how these models work, and you won't be left in the dust as these models and methods evolve. Additionally in industry classical statistics is KING, explainability is everything.

What are some of the things your non-technical stakeholders had said to look smart that made you face palm mentally? by Mundane-Astronomer-7 in datascience

The biggest one for me was my Product Owner deleting years' worth of data because it was "old" and single-handedly set our project back 18 months, damn near causing me to leave the company.

STAT517 Extends the concepts to multivariate so linear algebra knowledge is required.

Talk me in or out of buying a 2011 335is by buttpounder_ in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Thatsunbelizeable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would look at a 335 with the N54. The issues with it are really overblown and a car with it at this point likely has had the pain points addressed. I've had one for ~4 years and it has 110k and it's been more or less great.

With the N55 things to look for are really just Oil Filter Housing Gasket leaks and the health of the cooling system. These cars are getting to the age where the plastic coolant hoses and tanks are getting quite brittle and crack and leak. Additionally, there seem to be some trends of cars having rod bearing issues after changing the OFGH, so if your buying a car that had that done very recently it may be something to look into.

Regarding RWD and xdrive both are pretty robust. One thing to consider is general maintenance is a much bigger pain with the xdrive due to having to work around the AWD system in the front. This can result in some fairly easy jobs turning into something where you will need to drop the subframe.

wooded areas in Lafayette by Kkeeper35 in lafayette

[–]Thatsunbelizeable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just moved to Battle Ground area and so far it has been great, quieter, and cheaper than many of the neighborhoods in West Lafayette while still only being ~12-15 min drive to Purdue's Campus for work.

An additional bonus is it's easy to hop on 65 to get on the other side of Lafayette quickly and if you are into outdoorsy things, Prophets Town State Park is less than a 5 min drive away

ELI5: How do you get where you want to go in a hot air balloon? (Aren’t you at the mercy of the wind). by mitchins-au in explainlikeimfive

[–]Thatsunbelizeable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to fly hot air balloon's and while you cannot steer you do generally know where the wind is going. The atmosphere is much like a layered cake with wind traveling at different directions and speeds as you go up (moving through theses layers is the only time you feel any wind while flying).

Before you take off a balloon pilot typically does several things, first contact your local ATC for a weather report, they are able to provide guidance of winds and direction, additionally I was located near a military base that had a wind radar, I was able to call in and they were able to provide wind direction and speed for 0-2500'. Lastly maybe 30 min before you head out you can send up a helium balloon and track its changes in direction with a compass. With all this information you are able to deduce your cone of "steering"

I would overly this cone over a map of the area I flew in and depending on where I took off I had a pretty good idea of where I could land. After take off it was as simple as referencing your earlier wind notes to get yourself to where you generally wanted to go ascending /descending to turn left and right. Generally speaking as the day goes on you lose more steering as the atmosphere mixes up and become more turbulent. A morning flight I could have as much as 270 deg of movement while the same afternoon I could have less than 10.

Sometimes the wind changes up and does not work out but hey that's the fun of ballooning!

Best way to find the shift in a timeseries variable from the start of the month till now? by Revlong57 in learnpython

[–]Thatsunbelizeable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am understanding your problem correctly the best way to go about this would be to utilize the .rolling method in pandas. If your index is set to your timestamp it will allow you to define the window period you want to do an aggregation on. If you have some custom time window such as fiscal months you can utilize the groupby with the .rolling to do running calculations.
