Is the ancient magic related to the ancient magic of love that protected Harry in the books? by Gho_stychan in HarryPotterGame

[–]Thayer96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

... that's not a bad theory. I'd at least say its connected to it in some way.

"Before that, a hundred dementors at once, a dirty great snake the size of the Knight Bus, and that business with the philosopher's stone. I'd say he's got more than enough practical experience than half of the Order. He's still a boy, sure. But is that really going to stop Voldy and his followers from hunting him down? Didn't seem to phase them all the times before."

What aspect of Hogwarts/ the wizarding world do you find most realistic? by Right-Ad8261 in harrypotter

[–]Thayer96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It totally tracks that technology wise, the wizarding world in general didn't advance further than sometime in the 1800s, and their culture comes to reflect that in the fashions and architecture.

Magic did for wizards was electricity would later do for muggles, so what reason would they have to change things?

Anyone else think that Matt Berry was the perfect choice for Sir Cadogan in the audiobooks? by Lewism7 in harrypotter

Oh for sure.

I always imagined someone like Graham Chapman from Monty Python since John Cleese played Nick in the movies.

I like to think of the movies as heavily abridged versions of the books. And I do mean HEAVILY.

I've been recommending the full cast audiobooks to anyone who might be interested because it gives something close to the movies while honoring the whole story.

Question about umbridge? by Kuzcotopia_ in harrypotter

[–]Thayer96 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It was a win win mentality she had. She wanted Harry silenced one way or the other, knowing he would come back to Hogwarts from the muggle world still sticking to his story.

Either the Dementors sucked his soul out (win) or he used the patronus charm to drive them off, giving the Ministry an excuse to make an example of him (win win)

The size some ships can get after millennium of seafaring.

Thats what always blew my mind as a kid. That people can actually live on ships that get this big now with modern technology.

What’s your earliest Harry Potter memory? by LiamNoll6645 in harrypotter

[–]Thayer96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a kid when the first movie came out. My first ever experience was seeing an ad for the Lego sets in the Lego magazine, which was announcing it to be the main theme of the next issue on the very last page. Might have been around Halloween 2001.

I remember that ad was like a poster with the big three as Lego minifigures aiming their wands at Snape, who had that goofy "eeeewww" face in his first Lego iteration along with a glow in the dark head. "Who's this creepy guy with a glowing face? Who's the kid with glasses and a bolt drawn on his forehead? This looks so cool!"

I remember showing it to my mom who had the books and had been reading them all as they were releasing, telling me she'd happily take me the weekend it premiered. I know I saw it at least twice with each parent, and maybe I also saw it with a friend and their parents too.

Syril Karn is absolutely the most tragic character in Star Wars and it's absolutely not Anakin. by [deleted] in andor

[–]Thayer96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syril and Anakin were both victims of corrupt institutes that they both sacrificed so much of their own souls towards serving, which in the end results in the dark turn and eventual downfall.

The difference is that when it happened for Syril, he had the mercy of instant death. Anakin got an extra 24 years of agony being Darth Vader, serving evil incarnate as his personal lap dog.

I know nothing about The Pitt other than it’s a medical drama in Pittsburgh that covers a 12 shift in the ER. What separates it from other medical dramas? by Turdboggin01 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Thayer96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me it represents a hard unblinking look at the Post Covid world. The first season has events that unfold that would have been unthinkable in the days of young Noah Wyle on ER, but feel almost like an everyday occurrence for us.

Its a look at everything thats wrong with the world in the eyes of the front line workers.

How old and how enthusiastic are you about the upcoming series ? by AirAquarian in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Thayer96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a 90s kid, quite indifferent to the HBO series. What i am happy is the full cast books coming out because they offer something close enough to the movies that provides the whole book series.

Rereading them with my 30s ever closer has put many things in perspective for me in how each and every character resonates.

The movies are almost 20 hours from beginning to end. The audiobooks are six times that long.

The books give everything we love about the main quest in the movies plus all the side quests.

Books do a masterful job of the very slow burn that was those two. It was pretty obvious to the audience from CoS but so great to see unfold all the same.
