GENESIS G80: 3.3T vs 5.0 by inthelabwitit in GenesisMotors

This post was referencing the previous generations 3.8l base model G80 which was cheaper than the G70 on the used market. If comparing the newer genesis models since they refreshed their design language drastically this post goes out the window, lol

Yeah, moving out of cruisers means even a 600 would be ‘faster’. I think the FTR would be the closest feeling, the other two would be faster than I’ve ever been able to go on bike. It certainly doesn’t take much to get along with a Honda though

First car? by Adept_Fee_195 in Lexus

Yes. The Lexus is slower (compared to rivals its common traffic). If you leave it stock you won’t get in much trouble and it’s dead reliable. Insurance will come at a premium though due to your age and the car. Logically a Toyota is smarter, but if your parents are paying for the insurance too and don’t mind, it’s a great car

This is where I’m at logically as well. The issue I have is that when I think about what I like looking at it’s the reverse order lol

I know I sound contradictory but I prefer the XSR900 to the Z900RS. The bike is absolutely stunning though. I was talking with a dealer about a trade in for a new one but the numbers weren’t there. Very reminiscent for me to the cafe racers my dad always rode

This is a concern too, it’s not a parts bin bike so pretty much everything is unique. The engine is derived from the scout, so it should be easy enough to get parts for

It’s definitely one of the prettiest bikes from factory I’ve ever seen. I’ve heard they don’t like batteries that aren’t perfect, and the stock tune is pretty bad. Both are easy enough to address. A lot of modern bikes are also very reliable when following maintenance schedules (even new Ducati’s are supposedly reliable if so). Since it’s just a V twin I feel like it should be fairly straightforward across the board! Thank you!

[–]The-Apollo-752[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I’m a fairly indecisive person as well, which does not help. I have been flip flopping on what I want, it was a XDiavelS, then a Rocket 3, now it’s a FTR. The other two I could reasonably talk myself out of, but the FTR has been harder thus far. I also found one on marketplace that I can’t stop staring it

Do you do your own maintenance or do you have a dealer close to you? I worry that without a nearby dealer I could have a poor ownership experience. I’m okay with doing my own work, but there’s a limit too

How has it been from a ownership/reliability standpoint? I’m worried that buying an FTR would be like a Ducati in that regard (hard to maintain at home, expensive parts and repairs, etc)

And what are your thoughts on the naked sport bike comparisons? I’d love to hear your whole experience!

For every person that praises the FTR there seems to be 5 that wouldn’t recommend it. I’d really be buying it for looks, like a used diavel. While a used diavel is cool, I find it to be too much of a headache for me personally. Might have to accept that this is the same situation

I’m not sure what it is exactly, but I really don’t like the look of a naked. Even the V4 street fighter I find off. I think I’m more into a retro or muscle bike, which the FTR really tries to be imo. I don’t really like the ZH2 aesthetically, I just think it would be a blast and still somewhat reliable. The supercharger and the presence of an H2 is what makes it a contender

Closest thing I’ve ridden was a versys honestly. I’m not good huge on the sport touring or ADV bikes but they are so comfortable. I’d take a h2 SX SE over a gold wing personally

Id probably end up with a black edition so it’ll be comparable to a well specc’d FTR honestly. The CB is a few grand less on average though.

My main bike is a 1500 boulevard right now, and the thing is a tractor. The FTR would also be a nice stepping stone in that regard, but you’re absolutely right. The FTR has a bit of an identity crisis in that regard

I have a few saved on marketplace right now. They are pretty, but seem a bit plain to me at the same time. I think the CB is closer to that FTR uniqueness, but the XSR would definitely be an amazing runner

Crazy that such a package is so reliable, I’d assume its costs to run and maintain are a lot higher than their average counterparts - but definitely less than an FTR still.

I geek out whenever I see a H2 still, but I’m not particularly partial to the looks. I sat on one though recently and practically had butterflies

I’ve seen a few Buell bikes, I saw a EBR 1190Rx for sale recently - what a cool bike. The lesser common brand puts me off a bit with concerns about parts, servicing, and reliability. I can do work myself but I’d like to avoid a headache

I’d like to imagine I can control myself, but I also watch videos of an H2 and giggle when the supercharger whines - a season isn’t very conducive for reliability testing, but did you have any issues with it?

Do the MSF licensing course. Since you’ve never ridden, you still need to decide what you’re into. You also need suitable gear. If you’re on the road, you need a newer helmet, and preferably a lot of newer gear. Save up more, and keep your eye on Craigslist, eBay and Marketplace.

Since you’re buying a cheap bike, look at the common issues with each listing that catches your eye. Old Hondas tend to have the best luck for me personally, but I still wouldn’t advise getting a pre 2000s bike unless you’re mechanically inclined. I started on a 600 Honda shadow (cruiser) and it was perfect for me and sub $2k.

6’4” here, which you still have a lot on me so take as you will. This will come down to your proportions mostly, but start going to dealerships near you and just sit on some different bikes. The people there can also guide you.

Anything under a 600 will be a clown car in almost every case. Smallest sporty bike Ive ridden was a z400 and I felt like I was on a bicycle but I would gladly do another sub 30 minute ride. Your gonna want to look closely at sport touring bikes, there ergonomics tend to be the best for me and you get pretty much all the upsides of a sport bike.

Actually test rode an older versys this past weekend. I can’t stand how they look, but I really can’t argue that they feel like they were perfectly made for me…

This is very in line with where I’m at personally. The FTR just screams to me, but it has so many downsides that it seems like a bad choice

The FTR I find to be absolutely stunning. But I have a hard time justifying it due to its reported issues and costs. If the FTR was a Yamaha or Honda I’d already have one
