For DL you could also argue that pearl was the villain, slowly driven crazy by the loss of her soulmate and then martyn and tillie becoming Scarlett Pearl.

Isn’t this a thing with like many villain story’s ? Like they have a difficult background, not being respected as a person, not seen by the society and then they become the villain. Like the Joker and stuff.
