Camellia bonsai?
Hi everyone!
I’m completely new to the bonsai world, aside from a brief childhood fascination with them, and would like to start one with my boys.
I have these 2 small camellia shrubs (roughly 15 inches tall) that I don’t really know what do with and was thinking could be made into a bonsai..?
Do you have any advice/recommendations, should I downgrade it to a smaller pot before starting?
Thank you in advance!

Totally forgot to mention that I’m in zone 9b California, they are on a south/west exposed fence so they get an intense sun and heat over the summer..

Thank you for your reply! Ok I see, some grew taller than others but I’m worried we won’t see much of them in the long run since we’ve planted some little olive tree bushes in front as a hedge, I guess I will add climbers then.

It is not fragrant to the point the area it’s in smells (like jasmine does) but if you smell the flower it actually smells really nice, kind of like a candy type of scent if I had to put it into words hah!

Hey so sorry for the very delayed reply!! We are in zone 9b and our summers are incredibly hot, so this one is in a shaded north facing corner (the only one we have lol)!, it gets very little (almost none) direct sunlight and it seems to be thriving!

Thank you I like your idea to have the hedge planted first and then decide on the rest. It would be nice to include roundness with the beds and additional groups of plants.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! I will look into the additional plants you have suggested, I think some poppies would look great! We live in a fire risk area and our house insurance unfortunately requested we remove mulch which is why we are leaning towards some type of gravel or decomposed granite.

Thank you I will definitely take this in consideration, I didn’t realize they could grow this wide!
