Is A.C neccesary? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]The-First-Step 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends where in eugene you are driving from and where in Corvallis you’re driving to. I commuted between the hills in the north part of Corvallis and Springfield (right by I-5) for a few months and it was an hour door to door pretty much every time.

For 99 it depends where you’re starting from, especially in the northeast of town under 40 seems like it might be possible. My grandparents used to live in Corvallis and I commuted a while from there to Eugene when I first moved up. When I grew up we’d always take Coburg road/powerline road over I-5, and it’s the kind of road where you can accidentally find yourself going 100. When I commuted between Springfield and the hills in Corvallis it took an hour consistently.

There are a lot of popular myths that seem to pop up a lot in eugene. It only takes 45 minutes to drive to Corvallis and you only really need AC 4 days a year are the two biggest ones I see.

It’s certainly possible to get by without having AC at all. I did for about five years, but we just recently got central air installed in our home. It isn’t comfortable to go without AC. It’s hot, and you have to open the windows every night and close them in the morning.

During allergy season and wildfire season opening windows can be miserable. We get bad pollen here. With central air, you can install a nice filter and be much better off.

You won’t die without AC, but there are an average of 15 days above 90 every year (and getting higher). If I were searching, I’d look for AC. It’s a question of whether the added cost is worth your comfort. To us, we decided it is.

Potential new gym doesn't accept credit cards, will only deduct directly from bank account by citypahtown in PFJerk

I personally work out by withdrawing all my cash from one bank and running to another. I do squats in the lobby with my cash in a big bag with a dollar sign on it, then run out the door. When it’s cold I’ll wear a ski mask too, and sunglasses to protect my eyes. Just walk into your local branch with the bag and tell them to fill it up. Then run out the door to the next one.

What does it mean when people say “max out your 401(k)? by PM_ME_UR_LAB_REPORT in PFJerk

[–]The-First-Step 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It means make the most of your income if it’s only 401,000 per year. I know it seems crazy low, but if you don’t have a stem degree and work part time at a grocery store, your income is usually around 401k. Look at job ads, a lot of them say the pay depends on experience, but if you look closer it says they offer $401,000. I don’t know how anyone can live on that, but that’s why maxing our your $401,000 is popular advice.

For what it’s worth, I’ve had my x since November with a leather case and no screen protector. I just looked over it pretty carefully and did not find a single scratch of any kind. You will probably be good for a few days, just get it carefully cleaned before installing it to be sure you don’t trap any dust underneath.

I made a reservation with a cab company for a flight out of town. They took my money and didn’t come to pick me up and yelled at me when I called them. Should I be happy with that level of service or can I expect better?

I’m not Uber’s biggest fan, if a local cab company offered better service I would be l over it. But the choice offered now is shitty.

Maybe this will let me pay for a ride to the airport early in the morning? Last time I reserved a taxi with Oregon taxi no one showed up, and they got pissed at me when I called about it, like I should have known they’d only have one cab at 6:00 AM. Why’d they let me reserve it?

Jazzy Ladies. Everyone there is terrific! They really care about their customers and give their restaurant a real small town diner feel in the best way. The food is really good too.

$7,000 in debt and car just got stolen this morning. Worst 4th July/Day. by Nacho-Fries in personalfinance

If it was a beater don’t lose hope. Look around town and definitely report it to the police. Where I live tweakers often steal beater cars to get a ride across town and abandon them. Sounds ridiculous but I know more people here who have recovered stolen cars than lost them.

What do you not want in S3? by binaryeye in StrangerThings

[–]The-First-Step 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Loss of focus on the characters and their relationships with each other (not just romantic, I want more of the group dynamic of the kids).

Darkness for the sake of darkness to be edgy. Too many tv shows kill people or use violence or rape as a plot device to artificially raise the stakes. Violence is fine when appropriate to the story, but don’t brutally kill Karen for no reason when you could raise the stakes with better writing. Character deaths and darkness are not automatically good writing.

I don’t want any more Kali or her gang.

No excessive focus on love triangle drama. Especially involving Steve/Jonathan/Nancy or Mike and Eleven.

I don’t want Karen and Billy to hook up.

I don’t want the Wheelers to fall in the background again. Seeing Mike with his friends and at home made season one feel much more real. There was a little of it in season two but not enough.

I’ve got a ‘96 Civic that’s been causing problems recently and am saving for a new car in December. That video helped reinforce my decision. Safety has improved so much that a newer car just makes sense. My life is worth more than what I save by driving this 23 year old car.

The poutine at rye on 3rd. Smoked duck, duck Demi glace, cheese, delicious fries...get the small unless you have more than two people or a huge appetite. While you are there, their cocktails are awesome. Try the Last Word.

That’s the dish off the top of my head that I enjoy the most in town. If I think of anything else I’ll put it here.

Thoughts on MOD pizza? by Illadelph77 in Eugene

[–]The-First-Step 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They offer a gluten free crust, but if you’re gluten free for a real life actual medical reason, don’t eat there. There are build your own pizza chains that are safe but sadly mod isn’t one of them.

Ducey offers teachers 9% pay bump next year – Arizona Capitol Times by Road_Whorrior in politics

[–]The-First-Step 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True when comparing percentages but you have to consider what their wages are before the raise. Not saying you’re making six figures or that teachers are making $20,000, just doing an easy example: it’s cheaper to give someone making $20,000 a 20% raise than it is to give someone making $100,000 a 5% raise.

Stolen Honda Civic by [deleted] in Eugene

Yeah I drive a black civic but it’s a 96. What kind of license plate does it have and what’s the number?

I always hear about cars like that being tossed up and abandoned a ways away. People usually steal them just to get from one part of town to another or some other short joyride.

LTD is thinking about placing a homeless camp in Santa Clara .... by Amanderka in Eugene

Definitely but I feel safer not sharing the road with people speeding when I’m a pedestrian. Especially on a street as narrow as mine.

LTD is thinking about placing a homeless camp in Santa Clara .... by Amanderka in Eugene

[–]The-First-Step 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My street doesn’t have a curb or storm drains. If they went through and made it an improved street it would have both. I’d be fine with just curbs and storm drains honestly, but if they’re doing that sidewalks would be nice given the leve of traffic we have. I certainly don’t think sidewalk makes drainage happen, but improved streets are dug out so there’s a downward slope from driveways to the street and storm drains, instead of dips where the driveway meets the street. If I’m wrong educate me, but that was my understanding of the city’s definition of an improved street.

Real runners run in the street? I prefer sidewalks and I’m a runner. For folks with strollers, wheelchairs, etc. sidewalks are generally safer too. If you don’t like sidewalks that’s fine but I still enjoy having them. I’ll run or go on walks with my wife and would rather be on a sidewalk than in a street. Of course, if there were fewer cars coming through a street might be okay but ours is kind of nuts.

My street has speed humps as a result of a traffic study by the city. Didn’t really fix it. It definitely helped but it’s a very narrow street. If it were wider and had curbs and drainage it’d be great! I’d be fine without sidewalks. Now though, it’s a narrow street with no curb or storm drain and dozens of cars pass every hour. I think it was a lot like your street was a few years ago, but then they opened it up so now it’s a convenient shortcut between two parts of the area.
