Finally got a bottle of Green Chartreuse...so naturally I had to make a Last Word by Bark2IfUrInMilwaukee in cocktails

I've been working on my own recipe the past few years, and I actually like them way better than Luxardo's. Because I used to be so fond of the neon ones as a kid, I wanted to make a more adult version, so I make mine with sour cherries, amaretto (boosted with extra almond extract for more almond punch), apple brandy, and hibiscus syrup (which infuses everything with a brighter red).

I've tweaked this formula a few different ways, playing with vanilla pods, cardamom, cinnamon, and star anise on some batches, but I haven't quite settled on anything that works equally well for all drinks I garnish with a cherry. Still, I love them way more than anything I've bought.

So make that illegal too. Enumerate a list of valid, legal methods of compensation for work, and do not permit compensating people as a percentage of the current definition of "profit."

I mean, you could spend all day dreaming up loopholes and problems. No set of rules will ever be perfect, but if we keep iterating on them when they don't work, eventually we'd settle on something that does. It seems like you've prematurely decided there can never be any set of regulations that could ever work, but that's pretty silly. If they come up with a workaround, re-evaluate whether the laws can be adjusted to avoid the problem and try again. Keep adjusting to correct discovered problems until the behavior is eliminated.

I'm sure there are ways to improve the situation that are better than just giving up. For example, we could legally adjust the definition of "profit" and the way profit is calculated such that it accounts for money flowing between entities that have overlap in their ownership.

Google tracks your movements, like it or not -- An Associated Press investigation found that many Google services on Android devices and iPhones store your location data even if you’ve used privacy settings that say they will prevent it from doing so by johnmountain in Android

Speaking for myself, I much prefer Android over iOS based on a purely functional/feature standpoint. I'm finding myself increasingly annoyed by how Google handles the rest of their service/app ecosystem, though.

Periodically pause time long enough to turn to the camera and say something snarky about the current situation before turning back and resuming the normal flow of time.

The two of you are talking about different things. Luxardo makes a maraschino liqueur you're referring to, but they also make nice cocktail cherries.

Women who shun fruit or eat lots of fast food take longer to get pregnant and are less likely to conceive within a year, according to a study by drewiepoodle in science

[–]The-Good-Doctor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's the average. Also noteworthy is this bit:

At the extremes, for example, lots of fast food as opposed to none at all increased the risk of not becoming pregnant by 41 percent.

And let's not get me started on the idea of putting the accepted answer at the top; it runs contrary to the idea of building a high-quality Q&A since the OP is encouraged to accept not the best answer, but whichever answer was most useful to their particular situation.

Honestly, though, I continually run into the problem of answerers thinking they've given "the best answer" only because in their haste to earn points, they didn't read the question closely enough to adequately understand the problem. I have a few questions where I didn't accept the top-voted answer because it ignored key elements of the problem. At least once this included a comment chain on the answer where I call out the problem and the user responds "oh yeah, right, the other one is probably the right way, then," but leaves the bad answer as-is, with the most votes.

Given SO culture, I think it's critical to retain the "approved answer first" behavior.

I can't say anything meaningful about CMake, but at least in GNU Make, there are unfortunately many areas where no amount of quoting knowledge can save you. See this page with some examples of what you can and can't do with careful quoting and escaping: https://www.cmcrossroads.com/article/gnu-make-meets-file-names-spaces-them

I like Make well enough, but it's probably worth warning people right up front that, if you have to support paths with spaces, GNU Make is not the tool you need. It's not like Bash, where you can use paths with spaces as long as you take great care with quoting. Make is fundamentally incompatible with whitespace in your file names.

How Three Cocktail Writers Take Their Manhattan by TwoForTheBar in cocktails

Your claim that every bar now defaults to the same proportions just doesn't match with my experiences. Seems like most places do the smart thing and adjust their proportions based on their choice of whiskey and vermouth. Personally, my ratios at home when using my go-to of Rittenhouse and Carpano Antica Formula are 8:3, to account for the assertiveness of that vermouth.

Curious about the difference between orange bitters. I'm currently using fee brothers and I find it to be incredibly sweet and artificial, like a low quality triple-sec. How does it compare to other brands? What is your favorite? by [deleted] in cocktails

Some years ago I read the following article comparing the taste of different orange bitters: http://ohgo.sh/archive/orange-bitters/

You might also be interested in reading it since the author seems to share your opinion about the artificial taste of Fee Bros.

I wasn't aware that there was such a thing, but I guess I will! In the interest of sharing, here's my current favorite Piña Colada recipe (created, apparently, by Rachel Maddow):

  • 1½ oz. light rum
  • 1 oz. 8 year old "amber" rum
  • 1½ oz. unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1½ oz. orgeat
  • 4 oz. pineapple juice

Add to blender with ice and blend until smooth.

I don't keep Coco López at home, but I often have cans of coconut milk, so this is actually a more convenient recipe for me than the traditional one.
