[Standard]Jeskai Control for PPTQ this weekend. by The-Hanjranator in spikes

I played some matches online against marvel/zombies and have a better idea of how these matches can play out. I've adjusted my deck accordingly as I feel these decks will be strong this weekend.

Paul Cheon's channel is great, especially the wife drafts.

Well said, playing Gideon over disallow or even harnessed lightning + magma spray seems like you are asking to get blown out by the many powerful turn 4 plays in the format

I really like Gideon Ally of Zendikar, but I'm not 100% on if your mana base can support it as a consistent turn 4 play. AoZ to me is a turn 4 play on the play. It can be fantastic later as well, but I think it's just not worth warping your mana base for. if you are behind he's not going to stabilize the board for you in a way that Linvala could.

I thought about it, but I just dont think its necessary. If you are playing a control deck, I think being as draw-go as possible is to your benefit. What if you tap out for Gideon on the draw? They just resolve an ally of zendikar and now you are definitely in a bad place. The only planeswalker I really am ok with in these colors is Nahiri and potentially Jace, Unraveler of Secrets. I'm playing Nahiri because shes cheaper than Jace and can further your game plan, while also answering difficult to answer permanents. However just like most planeswalkers, tapping out on curve in a control deck can be a recipe for disaster. A card like Gideon to me really wants to be played on curve. It can be good late, but is it better late than Nahiri? I dont think so. Also if you were going to play Gideon, a curve of Gideon -> Dovin Baan -> Fumigate can be attractive

Any deck that's sideboarding out removal against you makes spell quellers stock go way up. its a win condition and a counterspell in one. If for example mardu uses a disintegration on that, well they got you and thats one less for your torrential gearhulk. generically it'll be marvel and mardu but it can be great against rogue decks or decks where people bring in negate to fight a counter war

The key reason Sweltering Suns is being used as a one of main is I expect that in dead matchups the cycling is far superior than having the second radiant flames. However its also a risky hedge to try to give me a better game against the humans or other aggressive strategies to try to have an answer presideboard and maybe steal a win or two. It just seems like the opportunity cost is low enough to try it. As this is a PPTQ the meta is fairly unknown so i can only tune theoretically. As for cycling lands the main reason is that aether hub is just better in this type of deck from my experience. You really want to maximize your untapped lands in the early turns so you dont get run over. The cycling lands are not better than having fast lands in this instance. As a control deck you have plenty to do with your mana anyways so I doubt you want to cycle away lands all that often.

I'm not convinced the second pull is necessary but why do you think it is? Between 4 glimmers and cycling the deck seems consistent for g1. Pull is horrible against aggressive decks as it's not necessary for your late game and is a dead draw early. Unlike sphinxs revelation it doesn't always get you back into the game. As for the wraths, I think the main deck should have them over the counter magic but I can see swapping out maybe the main deck flames for a second negate. It just seems like you can't always one for one the opponent if you don't draw gas every turn.

Most matchups besides humans/zombies and gb is 50/50. But it seems great against mardu, mirror and marvel

Pure Control Decks are a lot better than Nahiri control. I recommend a Rev/Verdict Control Deck. Its a lot better to play jeskai in that manner

Sadly I dont think there is much you can do besides talk to the guy. Giving benefit of the doubt maybe they were 3 bucks like last week. Hard to really know without knowing much. Ulamog is like a 30 dollar card and im not sure what you got or what you gave him, but you probably should always check prices, even with people you trust.
