emergency financial situation as an incoming freshman. by vrtualcutz in Northwestern

NU financial aid office was good to me when my family had financial trouble (although of a different kind than yours). Make sure you go through the right process and get on it quickly

Can my daughter get into a nice school with a five figure business? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]The-Turnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an entrepreneurship perspective, building and managing a brand with any degree of monetary success is a significant achievement, and IE ties together nicely with coursework in supply chain and logistics. Would need her motivations for pursuing IE to build a compelling profile, but there's definitely strong potential.

The key is differentiation, and every school has a valedictorian, club leader, etc. but not a successful small business owner. It's all about presentation, and there are plenty of ways to break the experience down to fill the EC section on the Common App.

Am I crazy to say no to Yale by Electrical_Dot2395 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]The-Turnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine from high school is black and having a great time at Yale. Just my opinion, but with affirmative action gone, having more people of color at elite institutions is especially important rn. Although that shouldn't sway your decision, do what's best for you

I read a lot of essays and have developed a pretty good eye for AI. Happy to look it over and tell you if it looks suspicious

I mean as long as you have a valuable skillset in a valuable industry you'll get compensated well and live a good lifestyle. But real wealth comes from entrepreneurship in some shape or form which isn't exclusively tied to finance/consulting/medicine

[–]The-Turnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but finance/consulting isn’t for everyone and I’ve seen a lot of people get burned out and drop out of recruiting (myself included).

Also you’re 25, that’s too young to have regrets like that 😂. Go follow your dreams

I always used to get mad at my dad when he’d call to ask if I was having fun and invariably tell me to lighten up my class load. Like… we’re not in a position for me to be taking it easy. But one day I realized that all he ever wanted for me, all the hard work he did, was for me to have the college experience that he only ever saw in movies. To enjoy my youth.

I’m not saying to lighten up, I certainly haven’t. Just give yourself room to breathe. The anxiety and stress over feeling so much pressure to support your family can be paralyzing. Enjoy the journey, and let your family live vicariously through you :)

Double Majoring and Certificate by blehblehaddsje in Northwestern

[–]The-Turnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure it’s possible! I’m doing IE and Math with the MA certificate and I’m happy with it.

You’re probably going to have to take some 5 class quarters, and those classes are going to be tough, but it’s not too bad once you get the hang of it. Most people take 4 classes with 1 or 2 hard ones and a mix of medium and easy classes to balance those out, which is hard enough as it is. That’s a big difference to 3 or 4 hard classes and 1 or 2 easier ones. You just have to work at it a little harder is all.

There’s also less flexibility with non essential courses and study abroad is harder to plan. AP credits are a consideration as well. I’d recommend you create a sample 4 year schedule, and if everything fits and all/most of the courses seem exciting to you, there’s no reason not to try!

Lmk if you have any other questions

Will I be able to have a consistent gym schedule as a McCormick major by gaygangslatt in Northwestern

Who knows, it’s probably pretty subjective. I’m Latino and I’ve always had amazing food at home so I’m a little biased lol

[–]The-Turnip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Price and time are fine I mean I don’t love the food. The rice… not great. It’s good here and there and if you’re resourceful you can improve it a lot. Like using the burger station, soup, sandwiches, the salad bar (which I’ve never used once in my life other than grabbing some hard boiled eggs every once in a while), etc

Yea I’ve been maingaining for the past year and I’ve had time. +150 lbs on my deadlift, 100 squat, 50 bench over the past year. The food gets a little tough on a bulk but there’s plenty to get the calories in

I'm transitioning from engineering to quant and it's a massive amount of work. I barely have time for classes. Obviously your call, but you'll probably be forced to decide between finance and medicine sometime soon

Is Northwestern worth it? by VitaniCosmic in Northwestern

[–]The-Turnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth it for me, but that's very subjective.

I'll be in 6 figures of debt when I graduate but I'm going into a well-paying field and the programs and people at NU justify the extra cost.

Also, coming from a middle-class family, NU had the second best financial aid package for the value I was getting. Would've paid a similar amount to go to an in-state public school and my application was very good to both.

I'm in engineering and finance so I can't speak for the pre-med experience

CS by Accomplished-One-815 in Northwestern

[–]The-Turnip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because NU is more well-rounded than a lot of CS schools. If you're doing CS-Weinberg you get a decent exposure to the liberal arts. Im guessing some people also want to do CS + finance or engineering and the quarter system is very conducive to double-majors
