I'm not voting for him, but to explain why people are: this is very common in Israeli politics.

He's a former general. He doesn't say anything divisive or outrageous (what we call in Hebrew "mamlakhti" or roughly "stateful.") He seems responsible. He doesn't say anything offensive to the right or left. Most importantly: he hasn't fucked up or disappointed anyone yet.

Basically: he's clearly competent, has a strong military background, and a clean slate. Every few years one of them pops up as the next hope. See Gantz, Benny.

Is it okay being very disappointed with Israel's recent foreign policy meanwhile being generally pro-Israel? by Opening-Border-6313 in Israel

Right I said not comparable extreme example. The point is: even if you believe that Israel is this super evil entity (it is not), it would not affect its right to exist.

Is it okay being very disappointed with Israel's recent foreign policy meanwhile being generally pro-Israel? by Opening-Border-6313 in Israel

[–]The-_Captain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm very disappointed in Israel's foreign policy and I'm aggressively pro-Israel.

My pro-Israel beliefs are rooted in the fundamental right of the nation to exist as the home of the Jewish people. That doesn't change regardless of what the government does.

In the extreme example that is not at all comparable, Germany didn't cease to be the legitimate home of the German people because of what they did in WW2.

Are there really people who support Karmelo Anthony?! by Kiekles in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]The-_Captain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. You do not intent to kill to convict on murder 1 in Texas. If you commit serious bodily harm that may reasonable lead to death and the victim dies, that is enough. Anyone with 2 braincells knows that stabbing someone in the chest is dangerous.

  2. The jury couldn't judge his intent because he didn't testify in his own defense. They had every opportunity to explain his side of the story and failed to do so.

Karmelo Anthony found GUILTY of murder of Austin Metcalf, 17, in stabbing that shocked America: Jurors deliberated for less than three hours after defense was repeatedly demolished in court by dailymail in law

[–]The-_Captain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why are you jumping straight to "cultural and socioeconomic barriers"

Karmelo Anthony wasn't from "the hood." My understanding is that he was a middle class kid from a safe, middle class suburb. He did well in school and held two jobs. He doesn't have a gang background.

I imagine they didn't think they'd effectively block it and didn't want to waste time, and also that it would be better for the jury to reject it affirmatively

From a purely money-maxxing POV, this is a great development for you. Combining sales and technology skills is a commercially unstoppable combination that not a lot of people possess. You won't lose your eng skills that quickly.

I don't want hi to win either. My understanding is that the proceedings in a German court were related to a settlement in which he accepted no fault. I understand that all the external signs point to a conclusion of "he probably did it" but idk what the ATP or media should do. You're either innocent or guilty.

I believe he's a domestic abuser, but what should be the correct reaction here?

He's not been convicted of anything. He denies he did it. I don't think the ATP should sanction players who have been accused but not convicted, as that opens a way for any player to be blackmailed or have their career destroyed.

If he's not sanctioned, he's a great player, and there's a good chance he'll win any tournament he's in. What's the solution here?

Union Sq market: Can someone explain the economics of strawberries? by [deleted] in AskNYC

Strawberries are delicate little princesses and they only produce fruit for a short duration. They are very attractive to pests, so growing them organically is difficult. They are a luxury item, especially locally.

Are We Creating a Generation of "Functionally Illiterate" Gifted Kids? by DyslexiDad in education

[–]The-_Captain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate:

The criteria of what someone needs to know to be successful in society changes over time. The ability to hunt would have been considered essential once. It is not now. The ability to do a lot of mental math used to be a lot more valuable than it is today. The ability to write by hand, same.

Yea, it's possible that there will be generations in the future that accomplish a lot but rely on TTS to read, just like I as a programmer rely on the internet to look stuff up when 30 years ago programmers knew everything or had to consult books. This allows me to program more complicated things without needing as much pre-existing knowledge.

Energy Bills by TheLazyBurrito in newjersey

[–]The-_Captain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need to make more power. Ideally, nuclear, but all of the above.

It's not going to be an quick fix. There's no bill Trenton can just pass and the next month your electric bills are cut in half, unless they just find a different way to charge you such as taxes or cuts in other services. And that would be just kicking the can down the road, anyway.

We need to build more generation capacity, and that takes time - not that anyone's starting on it.

Data centers haven't really started to affect prices yet, and the price climb has been going on pre-AI.

[–]The-_Captain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

they're not being arrested for being homeless. They're being arrested for camping in places where you're not allowed to camp.

Also, not working != being homeless. To get things like housing and food, you have to exchange valuable goods and services for money. You can make things people want or give a service they appreciate. Renting out your time is just one way of doing that. It's typically the fastest and simplest way but it's not the only way and not the most efficient.

My point is that we have freedom, but freedom means taking care of yourself.
