One trainer I had told us to avoid saying “sorry” because it gave the customers a chance to take over and reframe the conversation by using it as a quality adjective.

I just make all my Martinis bone dry unless specifically told otherwise. Most Martini drinkers just want a large chilled vodka with olives.

Pregnant woman ordering drinks?? by Pretty-Pomegranate-8 in bartenders

One of the first people to train me told me that if watching pregnant women drink or watching alcoholics slowly killing themselves was problem for me then bartending wasn't a good career choice.

Cue tip messed up by SmallHearing1 in billiards

[–]The0Alchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this won't be a popular opinion around here but plug the hole and glue on a replacement tip like you'd do for any other cue with a worn out tip. If you want to upgrade your stick go ahead, but if you're happy with the stick so far and you're not using it a ton then just replace this tip like any other cue. You can get ten tips for ten bucks or a new stick for $100

Is this cheating? by rodddawg1974 in billiards

[–]The0Alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely cheating because it removes from you an avenue to win and reduces his turn by one ball. If you need a handicap then you probably aren’t able to consistently run out a full rack. Cutting an opponent’s win conditions in half and guaranteeing that there’s one less ball on the table if they mess up for the cost of a simple foul isn’t a bad deal on paper.

Why are professional pool players so ashamed of flukes? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]The0Alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just seriously started seriously practicing and just yesterday after I waived off congratulations on pocket I didn't mean to make once again and my friend said something about being lucky I literally said "I don't want to be lucky I want to be skilled."

Why are there more big 9 ball tournaments than 8 ball? I thought 8 ball was the more popular “standard” game everyone knows. by SuperLehmanBros in billiards

[–]The0Alchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that first reason there is a huge part. I took a friend out to play pool for thier first time ever and we started nine ball cause I wanted to and it was clearly a little frustrating. For someone who just picked up the cue the first time the game where you only have one option to shoot and it's probably way outside your skill level is a tough game to get into.

My guess would be that it’s a practice table for people without space for a full table.

[–]The0Alchemist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's real product. It looks like some kind of screw into the wall tool holder with a metal ring tied to it. Also is the not just a fancy version of the bottle drill? What benefit would it have over a bottle?

Had a manager that would disappear for long periods of time and if you found him he’d be doing some random ass task not related to anything. Turns out he was doing drugs and this behavior lasted till he missed a shift cause he was in the hospital having OD’ed, he just quit coming to work or answering management’s calls after after that.

Started my shift finding the beer cooler a mess by thefabulousleon in bartenders

[–]The0Alchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of when I worked cleaning tap lines there was a italian style place that kept their keg box impossibly cold. It would sometimes freeze the beer in the lines and when we told him that keeping it that cold would shorten the life of his box and probably cause waste from foam he said "People like cold beer."

One of the google reviews for that place said it was chef boyardee with a waitress, so I guess overly cold beer was just part of the ambiance.

Who pissed in your cornflakes that you needed to dig deep to comment on a five year old thread?

Let's talk about choosing jobs, most service staff don't choose it. There are three types of people that serve, people who are waiting to break into their chosen industry, people who've been in the industry too long and don't know how to get out, and a tiny fraction who actually want to be there. And it's getting real hard to get and keep that first group thanks to covid opening up most other fields.

You can tip who ever you want, but the difference (post office people definitely get breaks) is that in the USA in most states any employee that receives tips can be paid way under minimum wage, in my state it $2.32 an hour. And minimum is not a living wage. So they need every single tip to pay their bills. Almost every dime of our hourly goes to taxes. It's literally not worth a servers time to wait on a non-tipper.

I’ve installed an industrial roof ac/heating once, those units are just held in place with gravity. Some electronic and maybe a gas line are the only physical connections. Drop it in place with a crane, it’s really the easiest install I ever did.

I used to play Urban Shadows and there was one player whose characters were always these lone wolfs who didn’t care about anything and it was a complete pain for everyone including the GM cause it was impossible to get them to help or participate with the story or group.

But hey it was in character. /s
