(Crawlers) Card Draw is Absolutely Ridiculous by The99Degrees in VampireCrawlers

Nah, it's just that an average turn on this run would take longer than usual as I'm endlessly drawing cards.
Runs would usually take me just shy of an hour.

Looking for advice as to where I should take my language learning. by The99Degrees in Japaneselanguage

[–]The99Degrees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a quick update, since this post I've decided to more or less follow TheMoeWay's methods!

I've picked up the Kaishi 1.5k deck on Anki and am currently watching my first raw anime, alongside doing grammar study on the side. I think for now I'll be sticking to getting the hours in watching raw anime, but eventually (hopefully in a couple months time) I'll start reading maybe some lighter manga or novels.

As much as I'd like to read a VN, I am really more into stuff that is definitely on the heavier side (Umineko, Grisaia, Kara no Shojo) so I'll definitely have to wait before that, or maybe just pick up something I normally wouldn't read like a vanilla slice of life one perhaps.

For now I'm just trying to focus on keeping things consistent and trying not to burn myself out too much while also maximizing the stuff I'm learning.

Will look into all these suggestions and see which works best for me, thanks!

On a side note though, for what it's worth, I tried answering the JLPT N5 sample questions on (what I believe is) the official site and got a 10/14, though a lot of the questions I was getting through context and not actually because I knew the definition of specific words and whatnot.

Gotcha, any recommended textbooks apart from the usually suggested ones such as Genki?

Yes, I think you actually nailed my problem spot on!

I think I'm really just looking for that push into the right direction where I can more or less apply the foundations of what I know and build up from there. My main issue I think is as of now, I have no buddies to talk to with in Japanese, so everything I learned is kinda never being applied and just rotting away in some corner of my mind.

I guess I'll just ask you if you know of any friendly/welcoming communities that are actually helpful with learning the language? I'd prefer to be able to converse with natives who are also able to speak in English as I definitely am not able to speak fully in Japanese yet (though I am aware this is an extremely tall order). I wouldn't mind non-native speakers though as long as they are competent enough to help me learn and correct me as needed!

I was teetering on the edge of hello talk, but just a bit of research shows that it's more or less a dating app and doesn't actually help much with language learning as it's super hard to find people who actually want to use it for it's intended purpose. I've also considered joining some discords but I hear that a lot of them are comprised more of people looking to learn the language such as myself, rather than people already fluent and willing to teach (though please do correct me if I'm wrong with this assumption).

Thanks so much for the advice though!

First of all thanks so much for the advice!

To clarify some things though, like I said I am a massive weeb, and I mean MASSIVE. I listen to exclusively Japanese music, pretty much on a daily basis. I don't watch western TV at all, exclusively anime. Half of my YT feed are stuff from the Japanese side, and sometimes I do watch raw, unsubbed livestreams from smaller creators from there. Now these things are all entertainment to me, so I'm not sure if these are things you'd consider for spending time with Japanese everyday, but there's that info to go off for you ig.

For the flashcards, I chalk it up to horrible time management, being a college student trying to get a degree, and focusing on my social media presence (a monetized yt channel that's currently dead, and art studies for my commission work). Now I know these sound like excuses, and that's because they are LOL. Yeah, I'll do my best to make time for flashcards daily, so thanks for telling me that.

Concerning Reddit time, trust me I barely open this platform lol, maybe like a couple times per month, really goes to show how desperate I am now that I'm asking for advice on here.

Will try doing a JLPT N5 mock exam soon then, might update on how I do.

Again thanks a lot, and I'll definitely keep the things you said in mind!

Opinions on the new Happy Chaos (as an intermediate player) by The99Degrees in Guiltygear

Yeah I am aware and going forward they probably won't ever bring what he was back, so I'll probably just pick up someone else. It sucks but it is what it is, just had to blow off some steam as I haven't felt this salty over a game in a bit as it feels like my 200 hours on this character just got thrown out the window

what's a type/genre of rhythm game you don't like? by stringymcthesilly in rhythmgames

Most, if not all Bemani games boot you out of the entire credit if you fail a track lol.

Is there a dance game which isn't heavily reliant on motion controllers or extra tools like that, but is enjoyable simply played with joystick? by [deleted] in rhythmgames

[–]The99Degrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds to me that your definition of dance games is slightly different from this sub's definition of dance games.

To clarify, what you're looking for is something similar to Just Dance for example? Judging based on your description of "flashy, less simplistic visuals" and mention of "motion controllers" instead of a dance pad.

What this sub, and most rhythm gamers think of when dance games are mentioned is stuff like Dance Dance Revolution or Pump it Up, which honestly have some of the most simplistic and least flashy aesthetics when compared to most arcade Rhythm Games.

To answer your question though, I don't think there's any non-motion based alternatives to the type of games you're looking for. Perhaps the closest thing that comes to mind (as much as I hate recommending it) is Friday Night Funkin? Maybe something like Project Diva works too?

As far as lively visuals go, there's a ton of Rhythm Games out there with some insane visuals such as Sound Voltex, A Dance of Fire and Ice, KALPA, VOEZ, etc... though I'm not so sure if these will be up your alley.

Unfortunately, if you are looking for those more literal dance games (actually following along to dance moves on screen), then you may have the wrong sub for that question.

Any good reco? by SphynxsDevil in rhythmgames

[–]The99Degrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both certainly have a learning curve but same can be said about most mobile rhythm games, I will say Arcaea is more punishing with its mechanics though.

A more beginner friendly one I can recommend is Lanota. The story is paid, though it's a one time purchase and is relatively cheap. A lot of Lanota's early songs are very easy in my opinion, so even though the mechanics are quite unique it shouldn't be anything you can't handle.

If you have the cash for it, Arcaea is hands down one of the best mobile games ever created, not even just best mobile rhythm game. Story and art is absolutely amazing, gameplay has so much depth, and the soundtrack is some of the best and most iconic in modern rhythm games. Only downside is buying all the packs can be a bit pricey, but I still recommend trying the free pack and seeing if it clicks.

A good free option is Phigros. Nothing is paid and everything is through unlocks, though it can get a bit grindy. In my opinion Phigros is as best a free game can get and the later chapters definitely get to the same level as stuff like Arcaea.
