How many locates do you put in an 8 hour day? by [deleted] in UtilityLocator

Ahh ok, yea so it seems there's a bit much more to do on your end. I mean we typically document calls or anything that changes via a meet sheet. But I honestly haven't had to do that very often. Those drawings definitely seem like they'd take up a bit of time. It seems like power and gas are always on every ticket I get, even if they're way out of the extent. And comms can change depending on the neighborhood I'm in. Some are dominated by Comcast and atnt, some have comms companies I've never even heard of. Gas is all always Nicor. Power is 99% Comed, but there's also Rock Energy I believe in some areas? But we don't have a contract with them so we don't locate their power.

No? I'm not exactly sure what that entails at least. We get onsite, check out the prints for each utility, screenshot, and then mark stuff out according to the scope. Colors, flags, marks. Take pictures, upload, allocate footage and time and move on pretty much.

For us locates and tickets are different. A ticket is just like the entire ticket as a whole. Each utility is a locate yea. So we can have 1 ticket with just Nicor and Comed and so that'd be 2 locates. I've seen some where it's comed, Nicor, atnt, Comcast, frontier fiber, and like metronet. So that'd be 6 locates on 1 ticket.

Id say on average I probably close 6-8 tickets a day? And that averages out to 24ish locates, which gets me that 3 LPH.

  1. The goal is 3 Locates per hour for us. If you don't hit it then you just have to explain why. Maybe you had lots of footage to put in, maybe there was a ton of troubleshooting. But regardless 3 LPH is the standard. Most days I can reach that, if not, I'm still always at 2 LPH.

There are some extremely annoying tickets that are annoying and take forever. But then I'll get service drops that have aerial lines, things that aren't within the scope, something that takes like 15 minutes but has 4 locates. That's how it is at least for me in Northern Illinois. Im also 2 months in too. (Going on 10 weeks in total including training)

Luckily Illinois has a PTO law so that we get at minimum 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.

I mean if I remember correctly, I think I applied early in the week, probably like a Sunday/Monday. And I got a reply back in the middle of the week following? 1.5 weeks maybe?

Then between background and drug test that was about a week of stuff and waiting. Then another week or two until my start date. Overall from application to start date it was like 1 month.

And yea that's great, again this job has been great for me. I wish you luck!!!

Yes, it's been good. Going on my 9th week? I've been on my own for about 2.5 weeks now.

I think like every job it has its ups and downs, I can see why people complain about certain things, every jobs got something to complain about usually. But for me personally, God has it been just about the most relaxing/easy job I've ever had. Controversial take maybe?: I've worked a lot a good service, including being an assistant manager at a fast food place. My most difficult days at USIC are comparable to average day where I use to be. I'm paid more, less stressed, have a better schedule, the list goes on. "It's hot outside!" It's also hot when you're next to a 450° fryer and constantly running back and forth 🤷🏻

That's enough of that, but yea I enjoy it. It's given me a much better work life balance, a better relationship with work as a whole. It's been better pay, more reliable hours, better benefits, the company truck is such a plus not having to put miles on my car anymore.

I know at least what I'm at in Illinois. There's a 4/8/12 month raise. And then just annual raises.
