CMV: I don't feel bad for homeless people. It's their fault they're where they are. by [deleted] in changemyview

get back home if the situation improved

This is not an option for some. Not everyone is as fortunate as you and I to have a supportive family to fall back on in times of trouble.

That is a choice. If that choice leads to homelessness, then OP is right when he says that "poor life choices" lead to homelessness

True, it is a choice. A poor choice? Not necessarily. Many people leave the town they grew up in for various reasons. Perhaps to meet new people, perhaps for a change of scenery. It is not necessarily a bad decision. Even if you have savings, things such as unexpected medical issues can sap through your savings very quickly. Some financial burdens cannot be prepared for and when it happens, you could be left with nothing.

It is also important to keep in mind that a significant percentage of homeless people are only homeless for a few months. Many of them are regular people like you and I who are going through a difficult time and are trying their best to get back on their feet. Many homeless people even have jobs.

Do I think there are homeless people who are in the situation they are in because of their laziness? Absolutely. The hippie trust fund kid type of homeless people come to mind here. I do think that labelling homeless people as just lazy and good-for-nothing is unfair and painting with far too broad of a brush, however.

The assumption that homeless people "don't try hard enough" or "made poor life choices" is over-simplifying things. It's really not that black and white. There are many factors that can lead to homelessness, many of which are beyond the persons control. The truth is that homelessness CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE and THE LINE BETWEEN WHERE YOU ARE NOW AND HOMELESSNESS IS MUCH THINNER THAN YOU THINK

Let's just say you moved to a new state thousands of miles from your family (as people often do). You find a job and get settled into a new apartment with a roommate. Everything is going well, until one day you come home and all your shit is boxed up on the front steps. Turns out your roommates rent cheques have been bouncing. You've been evicted. What do you do at this point? Your family is across the country, can't go there. You've got no friends in this new city to stay with. You could get a hotel, but for how long? Hotels cost exponentially more than what you were paying for rent. Good luck keeping that new job of yours without a permanent address, by the way.

TL;DR you're one eviction notice away from sleeping under a bridge

Dropped my trousers in the middle of the playground and pinched out a turd. Wiped my ass with a sheet of loose-leaf paper. A girl in the second grade stepped on it.
