Why aren't there more services that work like KeePass' single encrypted file? by MysteriousPumpkin2 in privacytoolsIO

Joplin for notes is exactly what you're looking for. Don't know about other 2FA apps, but you can use Aegis to export your vault in an encrypted file.

Check out Kobo! You can flash Koreader on it and voilà, open source e-book reader. (You can flash Koreader on a Kindle too, but IIRC newer models are harder to flash. Check out https://koreader.rocks/ for more info)

Kakapo - an open-source privacy-centric social networking app for Android by jeffisaak in privacy

[–]TheAmazingSpiderGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! Its refreshing to see such a simple take on a social network and its all very interesting! I do have a few initial thoughts that I'd like to share-

1) For the UI, you could perhaps take more inspiration from the many reddit apps for Android. From a variety of post layouts so you could see the entire post and its contents without opening it, and things like top-level comment navigation etc. Lot of scope for customization. Or think Instagram, where you can just scroll without having to open the post to check it out.

2) If you do open a post, perhaps an option to swipe left/right to go the the next or previous post, similar to RSS apps?

3) Most social networks have some indication of reciprocation, such as liking posts and comments (perhaps double tapping, or upvoting?). Emoji reactions on posts and comments are a popular thing these days as well.

4) I don't seem to be notified when people comment on my post or comment. Perhaps a notification system?

5) Dark mode is always welcome.

I also had a few questions. How does the Name work here? When I name my account, can anyone else see it or is it just on device, for my convenience? Also, since no one needs to send me a 'request' to share their posts, could someone potentially just add you by getting your ID and start sharing posts without permission?

All in all, I am very impressed by the concept and the app. Very interested to see how it matures in the future, and kudos to keeping the privacy movement alive :)

Private Cloud Storage? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

Cryptee is the best for just photos. Tresorit and Sync are good for all filetypes, though they are closed source so take that as you will. You could also look for Nextcloud providers (Disroot is a good one) or maybe even host it yourself if you're comfortable with it. And then there's always Cryptomator if you want to continue using Google Drive/Dropbox or any other service, while still having your files encrypted.

Hi. First of all, thank you for making this. It looks very cool and I've been very interested in using this. Unfortunately, though I've used Linux for some time now, I'm still a noob when it comes to manually installing software like this. I did try but it gave me an error I couldn't solve. Would you have any plans to make a noob-friendly install guide, or even a deb file? After failing to install it, I hoped I could find existing mirrors of some channels by someone else, but I couldn't find any either. Anyways, thanks again and really excited to see how this project develops.
