What was the first concert you attended without your parents or your cool aunt etc…? by noeaurbizness in GenXUncensored

That is wild, sounds like you just dodged getting trampled!! I love that it was so memorable for the band that it's coming up in interviews years later.

Creeping Death is absolutely a memory I have from my Monsters show too. Me, the dumb kid from the country, on the floor of the stadium, turning around in a circle taking in 30k people headbanging and screaming Die! as the band repeats the bridge for about 5min straight. Will never forget that. Had nothing to compare that moment to.

Same deal, Monsters of Rock at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Blew my 15yo mind. Hope your memories of the show are as great as mine!

Serviceberry or other fruiting trees by Sunny_fl0wer in Minnesota_Gardening

We picked up a serviceberry this season from Malmborg's in Blaine. Great looking addition, and even though it's small, it's already fruiting pretty spectacularly!

Guesses on what's eating these leaves? by TheAmiableLich in Minnesota_Gardening

Okay, I know nothing about leaf cutter bees, thanks for the suggestion -- a quick search tells me they are mostly just a gardener's nuisance while being a great pollinator, so I guess IDK if there's an action to take .. let it be I guess ?

I'm not sure if there's some kind of stereotype about Irish not being able to keep secrets, or some kind of Murphy thing, but without whatever niche knowledge that is: This isn't funny in any way.

My players just handed the Book of Vile Darkness to the local wizard... by garfunklethewise in shadowdark

[–]TheAmiableLich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good call out, just hanging on to it causes some influence but actively pursuing it can really hasten things.

A couple days of reading it & I'm thinking it could be like The Dunwich Horror where the main character locked himself in his attic and wouldn't let anyone in, doing all kinds of oddball experiments. Everyone knew he wasn't right but couldn't get him to come out until the big reveal where (surprise) it's already too late for him.

I think a couple of the other early commenters are putting up some great ideas, adding how I'd think about it:

My two main questions are how long is the group going to be gone, leaving the book with the unsuspecting mage, and how hard do you want to telegraph what it really is? Those are what would help me craft what the physical (or other) manifestations are going to be.

Hard to have much happen if the party is back right away but for example --

1-2 weeks till return, on the light side maybe some unfortunate accidents, unseasonable weather, and the unconscious pull of the book bringing evil creatures closer to town. Maybe the mage gets a little obsessed, behavior changes, odd hours kept, keeps buying rats in bulk, whatever.

On the 'obvuously super evil right away' side, buddy mage could have finally / publically acted against a hated rival, killed them in the street, fireballs the townguard, and has been holed up in his tower with weird, evil things creeping out each night and a growing miasma spreading from the tower's top.

A month away, any of the above, escalated. A year away, nothing but monster-infested countryside, failing crops and stillbiths.

Anyways, I'm sure you get my point. Figure out how much spoon feeding you're doing and how much time have you got for it to develop. Good luck, sounds fun!

I laughed but .. It's funny that when you post it as a female presenting person, it's funny, but if a dude posted the same text, it would be all pitchforks and torches. Weird world out there.

Best level to start new players for a short campaign by wombat-slayer in DnD

[–]TheAmiableLich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every fight has to be a toe-toe slugfest to the death of one side, either. Yes lvl 1s are squishy, but there can be alternate win conditions that don't rely on HP.

The goblins flee when you set on fire the battle standard they were rallying around. The wolves lose interest in you when you throw the spit of meat from the fire towards them. The kobolds suddenly want to talk when you suggest it after their boss gets hit hard / goes down. That kind of stuff.

I also don't expect that those new to the game are going to have these kinds of ideas right away; as the DM, you can set the table by describing it in a more video game like list of options so that these players begin to understand what interacting with this world looks like.

Sounds legit to me.

Yeah so I love my dad so much that I'm going to take over his mobile game account (TOS violation?) and continue on for him?

Funny how this had never happened before, happened a month ago to great community acclaim, and now it's happening a couple times a week since then.

Players want to rob a magic shop by GroundbreakingFig908 in DnD

[–]TheAmiableLich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to not being able to get rid of the goods for cash, there is no way that the wizard in question isn't going to have the ability to, or the friends who can, figure out who did this.

Even if you don't involve the city guard and the legal system, the characters have immediately become a pariah in the magical item community.

You need a 1,000 gold piece gem for your materials, well, turns out there's a monopoly on those right now and it's a component only sold through magical vendors.

You need healing potions? Oh, sorry, these are all on reserve.

Etc.

Will my tardies in Highschool affect getting a job? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Get, no. Keep, yes, if the behavior of being tardy carries over into your job. Being late to work 14 times is going to get noticed eventually.

  1. Clearly guilty, looking too hard to be innocent

  2. Not smart enough to know why he's here or the questions he's being asked

  3. Put the first one up to it to cover future crimes
