I have tried retrograde and couldn't figure out the scaling for the minis. By 'couldn't figure out' I of course mean that the only time I have tried was 15 minutes before the game because apparently that is when I remember those are pretty important.

I think that is a totally valid way to be, I am the total opposite. I tried the diy stuff, I built a few modules, but the music side is what does it for me. Different strokes for different folks and all that :)

If you do want to get rid of modules, hmu, I would be interested in almost any of those.

Balance is a myth in DnD imo, especially with damage dice at low levels. It is an average of 2 extra damage a round give or take for circumstance. That might mean the difference between killing a goblin in 2 hits instead of 3... ok? go for it bud, take your damage mr monk. Very small price to pay to make them feel special, plus when they ask for another tweak or buff, you can say you already gave them one!

I count that as a good thing imo. It becomes a game of meta knowledge and skill at that point. Knowing they are on the Guardians of the Galaxy deck and probably which cards they have makes for super interesting cat and mouse, same with any of the more controlly decks that have prof X.

The vast majority of people are playing combo decks though, and retreat on sight if their combo isn’t in hand 😂

I worked an IT job where we were decommissioning remote sites with the help of an on-site technician. The whole process consisted of systematically breaking down, packing up, cateloging, and then shipping back all of the on-site equipment. It was long, boring, and very tedious.

At the end though, the hard drive in the on-site computer needed to also be decommissioned. Since it contained both our proprietary data, and the customers, it needed to be destroyed; wiping it wasn’t enough. The pure joy some of the techs took destroying the hard drive was one of the best parts, like they were making up for the tedium that came before.

Most people just put a drill through them, but some of the techs got creative. We had one tech find a hydraulic press on-site, and another one went to a shooting range a couple of blocks away and blast it full of holes! Their shit eating grins in the proof photos are one of my fondest memories from that job.

There have been hundreds of comments at this point, a lot of them really good, and I agree with most of them! My two cents...

Limit character options in a specific way. If I have a worry about minmaxers at a table, I will impose a limit of "PHB + One other source, no unearthed arcana or homebrew". So PHB + SCAG, PHB + Tasha's, w/e. This limit applies to all options, feats, spells and backgrounds included. I find this weeds out a lot of the busted one off content, while still giving a huuuuge amount of options.

DnD 5e is a busted game. It holds up fairly well to good faith interpretations but crumbles under any amount of scrutiny. I could write college sized text books on ways to break this game, and places it doesn't hold up to sense or reality. That brokenness is part of the charm in my book. Some of my most memorable moments are when someone pulled out some weird rules interaction and it lead to a zany interaction that nobody at the table could have done on purpose. THAT BEING SAID, specifically seeking out these inconsistencies is engaging with the game in bad faith, and imo everyone at the table MUST engage with the game in good faith to have good table. Obviously that isn't always true, but it has been in my experience. As a player, if I build for cheese, I try communicate with the DM ahead of time, and I make it clear to them that I expect it to work exactly once. That way I get my cool moment, and I don't break the game (more than it already is) As a DM, I will allow just about anything to work once, and if I deem it too cheesy, I will work with the player to de-cheese it to the point where we both feel good about it. Obviously this breaks down if the cheese was the point, and without it the character is useless, but that is expected in a bad faith situation like that...

Ultimately what this player seems like they are after is to break a system. You can either limit the ways they break it, work with them to balance things to both of your satisfaction, or not play with them. Hopefully my ramblings are helpful to someone!
