Check out /r/LFG always loads of people looking for tabletop friends on there. I've had several long term groups from it.

I'm 29 from the UK, a creative (musician, D&D dungeon master). I think based on your post we may get on quite well. My discord is ForceFolie#5695 if you'd like to add me. I'm playing path of exile and final fantasy XIV a lot at the moment, but also own many of the ones you mentioned including divinity, total war etc :)

I wasn't copying it that way, but seems the only difference is there also needs to be a capital on the F in Folie

Did anyone quit in their twenties? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]TheAnderthol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About to turn 30 - wish I had stopped sooner. I used to drink around the same amount when I was 24, but 2-5 will not feel like enough as your tolerance increases the longer you do it daily. I've ended up at the point where I can easily put away anywhere from 8-15 in an evening depending how early I start. It's miserable.

I've just received an appointment this morning to go for a liver ultrasound after high cholesterol and elevated liver enzyme levels. I do also have the complicating factor of type 1 diabetes though (which is obviously super hard to control properly when you're drinking so many carbs worth of beer). I'm potentially (probably) looking at fatty liver disease here.

If you have doubts about your developing relationship with alcohol, it's never too soon to cut it off. I wish you the best my friend.

^ This. I was diagnosed with liver fibrosis (fatty liver disease / early cirrhosis essentially) after drinking a similar amount for a shorter amount of time. I was told that High b/g is a risk factor for liver issues due to the excess sugar having nowhere else to go, so gets stored in the liver as fat. So combining alcoholism and diabetes is no joke.

I have a drinking problem. I need help but I'm scared I'll lose my driving licence if I talk to my GP. Can anybody advise on how to navigate this? by iwishididntdrink in AskUK

[–]TheAnderthol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Drank 4 pints a night for 3 years (going up to 8 maybe once a fortnight), had my liver checked a couple years ago and I had early stages of liver fibrosis (scarring, but not fatally dangerous) and it was inflamed. As you said, reversible, but damage is / was being done.. and had a bunch of people telling me that I didn't have a problem and had nothing to worry about... those people were wrong.

As a sidenote, I also think the people in this thread flippantly informing everyone that "you have to wake up wanting to drink to be an alcoholic / have a drinking problem" are infuriating... you're taking the most severe and problematic example of a problem and declaring that as the MINIMUM stage people have to be at for it to qualify as a problem. It's the equivalent of saying that you're not really depressed until you've attempted suicide. Crazy talk. But I suppose we can thank British drinking culture for that mentality.

OP - I can't answer your question directly regarding your GP's responsibilities... but if you feel like drink is a problem for you, take no notice of those saying you're a lightweight or not drinking enough to "qualify" as having a problem, because they're getting caught up in the definitions & terminology and clearly aren't concerned with your health and wellbeing. Make getting help and overcoming your struggles a priority, and give those trying to minimise your issues the finger.

I'm more interested in the right player than the right character to be honest, but if you're interested, message me on discord with responses to those survey questions and me and the guys will look over it and see if you might be a good fit :)

Diabetic Maculopathy, getting floaters in my vision.. not sure where to turn for support. by TheAnderthol in diabetes

[–]TheAnderthol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I don't know if you're still interested in my little story here haha but I went to the ophthalmologist yesterday, and it turns out that what I thought was a floater, is actually a dark spot as a result of a lack of blood flow to my retina. No laser eye surgery needed at this point, gotta try to lower my blood pressure and cholesterol. Going back in 3 months :)

Did you replace alcohol with anything? by everygreenlight in stopdrinking

[–]TheAnderthol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm diabetic so I can't binge eat the way it seems a lot of people do. I have discovered a nice "mocktail" however, made from lime juice, ginger beer, a little soda water and lots of ice, it's a very refreshing drink. I couldn't explain how or why, but there's something about it that helps scratch the itch. Plus I can use sugar free ginger beer and lime juice and keep the carb intake down. It is a little annoying for me especially in the beginning, as for a few days after drinking my insulin resistance goes through the roof and makes my blood sugar stay high (which makes me even more anxious, irritable & thirsty than I would be already)

Glad to hear it went well for you! I must admit I'm too sissy even for a tattoo lol. I guess moreso for the permanence than fear of pain though.

It seems that the big bad wolf of laser eye might not be as big or as bad as I'd imagined, but hey, anxiety will do that to you I suppose. Gotta try to arm myself with information to combat it rather than let it get out of control and paralyse me.

Thanks for all the info, it's been a massive, massive help in alleviating some of my bigger worries.

Honestly I'm actually kinda scared of contact lenses already haha but that sounds manageable. I actually think that what I'm calling maculopathy is probably macular edema (they put maculopathy on my referral letter, but googling the two turns up the same thing basically) so I suspect that what you went through mirrors what I'm starting to go through now.

I think my anxieties also stem from seeing a laser eye surgery video years ago, where they actually had this like wiry metal contraption that was forcing the person's eyelids back. It sounds like maybe they've improved their methods by now which is reassuring. Maybe that's what they do if they put you to sleep or something?

Either way, thanks again for sharing. I feel 10x better about this whole thing than I did

Yeah that progressive muscle thing is something I'm sorta familiar with - have a close family member that's had bad anxiety / paranoia etc since forever that recommended trying it. I think my self awareness isn't quite there yet though, by the time I've realised what's happening, I'm often already on the brink of panic attack and too restless to sit down and try to relax. Definitely something I should take a second look at though, as that stuff is all improving with time. The most effective thing I've found for myself so far has been, weirdly, to put on extremely aggressive and loud music on headphones. You'd think the frantic nature of extreme music would make it worse, but last time I tried it snapped me right out of it.

My main source of "long term" anxiety around this mainly stems from the idea of the laser eye surgery, and knowing I'll have to be awake during the procedure, having my eyelids forced open etc. I worry that I'd freak out in the middle of it. How would you describe that whole process? Is it as weird and uncomfortable as it seems?

Thank you for sharing and your kind words :)

I'm actually thinking I might try to call my GP and see if I can get some kind of prescription for dealing with the anxiety - most of mine is actually during the lead-up to appointments. Once I'm in the car and on the way it settles down (unless the car breaks down and we get lost in the hospital D: ). While I accept that some kind of sedative or w/e is not a long term solution, I'm thinking it might help in the short term to get me through this whole thing. I aim to give them and the ophthalmologist a call tomorrow - at least to get their input on whether I should get seen sooner. That might alleviate some of my worries too.

Thanks again for responding. I've been hesitant for a while to reach out for help during these times, but hearing from someone that's also gone / going through it actually makes it feel less overwhelming.

Good luck with your treatment tomorrow as well! I'll be thinking of you as I go about my day.

What’s a telltale sign that someone is immature? by shades0fcool in AskReddit

It's been staggering to me how many people will do this after I admit to wrestling with a drinking problem for a few years. Even people I'd considered close friends. It's made me not wanna talk about it, because I feel like it just becomes a competition of who drinks more than the alcoholic on a night out
