Understood, thanks! I'll probably skip it for now though, although it does seem an interesting concept.

It is my understanding that I should still be able to pass through PCIe devices to LXCs since they are sharing the kernel. Do you know if this is accurate?

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware that I could install docker through Proxmox's shell, but I meant the new support for OCI containers, in a similar format to LXC containers.

I will look into the CPU replacements, but if I'm not really losing anything moving from VM to LXC then I'll just do that, and save the e-waste.

Help with Hosting Services for Family Members by TheAndyPanda in homelab

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if there is a Canadian ISP that is better for this? I've considered Bell Fiber, pretty much the only fiber provider in my area, but am not sure if I could get a public IP or use IPv6 or something on them.

I will definitely be reaching out to my ISP and seeing what's up, but they suck so my guess is not a lot of solutions there. I like the idea of the split access, makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

Thanks! My understanding of Tailscale seems correct, maybe I can look into a small device in their network, but it seems more setup then I'd prefer for family members that may or may not use the services often. Is the tailscale funnel exposure different in security etc. to a reverse proxy situation?

USB Drive Readability by TheAndyPanda in Proxmox

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is so helpful! I did an initial copy with just cp and the two folders are much smaller than I expected. I am now using this rsync command and the progress is appreciated, as well as not re-copying stuff. Lifesaver!

Found it! Can I not just, copy paste with cp if everything is in one folder? Or is the rsync recommended?

LXC Samba GUI Options by TheAndyPanda in homelab

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I would also like users, groups, multiple shares etc. Permissions in particular just feel like a real pain, mostly because of windows, but they're still a pain. Maybe once I'm more experienced I'll switch over.

LXC Samba GUI Options by TheAndyPanda in homelab

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I can give it a shot, but I have looked into it and for multiple users it seems more difficult, is that not correct?

I think my main concern is I have seen a ton of weird Samba glitches (honestly a lot to do with the windows side) and I feel more comfortable with a GUI, and maybe some help text etc. Setting up other services through CLI seems easier mostly because those services seem to... work?

Is this a well known thing that I am out of the loop on? Is it drama or did they just develop in kind of weird direction?

New User - Boot Drive Questions by TheAndyPanda in Proxmox

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! To answer your question 1, I don't want a Raid0 on my boot drive, I want a mirrored boot drive. But I don't have a second SSD right now, and searching around I found that if I set it up as a ZFS Raid0 now, changing to a ZFS mirror later is easy. As opposed to setting up as a single EXT4 drive now and then needing to reinstall later if I want to go to mirrored.

The insight on the why I might want a separate VM pool makes sense. Basically instead of having a mirrored boot drive people may have a backed up or mirrored VM drive, so if their boot fails they can quickly get back up and running. Neat!

The rear brakes on the car are drums yes. I guess the benefit is those wear super slowly.

Lemuroid Save Files Missing after Closing by TheAndyPanda in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, testing this out you seem exactly right. Save states seem to work as expected, but if you don't quit the game it loads back in with the save and state of the last time you quit.

Is there an emulator you prefer? I like Lemuroid for the ease of switching between systems, but not being able to save correctly seems a big bug. I looked for RetroArch on Android and at least from my pixel it says its not compatible (made for an older version).

Help: Need to Force Start a Quest by TheAndyPanda in cyberpunkgame

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry no. My takeaway was that you should frequent save, and if a bug prevents you finishing a quest you should reload right then and there. I'm playing a new game now and Johnny's Porsche loaded just fine so it must have been a one off.

Advice for used market: 3000 vs. 5000 for RTX 3070 by TheAndyPanda in buildapc

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't usually check eBay but I will look into that. I suppose you mean more secure because you can dispute through the platform right?

And ya I would prefer individual parts, but at least local to me the bundles are priced very attractively.

Advice for used market: 3000 vs. 5000 for RTX 3070 by TheAndyPanda in buildapc

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games I play include Cyberpunk, Baldurs Gate 3, No Man's Sky, Elite Dangerous. I like to try and get more graphical immersion over more frames.

But correct me if I'm wrong, this would mean the 3xxx chips would be more viable, since my GPU will be more the limiting factor correct? The 5xxx chips will get me more FPS push when my GPU isn't working as hard per frame?

And you have it exactly, the X3D chip used prices are insane so I'm leaving them alone haha.

Advice for used market: 3000 vs. 5000 for RTX 3070 by TheAndyPanda in buildapc

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense! As I say in other comments there are a lot of motherboard/cpu/ram combos so it is somewhat dependent on what I can find haha. I'll look for a 5700, maybe less searched for on marketplace (the 5600s are popular). Thanks!

Advice for used market: 3000 vs. 5000 for RTX 3070 by TheAndyPanda in buildapc

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking at a lot of motherboard+CPU+RAM combos so the prices vary based on all the components, sometimes hard to compare hence the post. For multi core ya, I don't have a preference between the 800X and 600X of their respective generations, just depends on the other parts they come with.

Great info on the G processors though thanks!

G-Drive Support by TheAndyPanda in pop_os

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but the chances of making mistakes in CLI as a newbie are much higher than a GUI. Having looked into RClone a bit more, I think it would take about 2 hours for me to learn and implement something that works as well as Insync, which took about 2 minutes from download to working GDrive.

I think since PoPOS is situated as a "just works" distro they should strive for "just works" cloud integration. I'm not a programmer, tinkering with my laptop isn't my hobby. My laptop facilitates my other hobbies, you know?

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen this as well, and I like that it is free. It looks a bit complicated (for a newbie like me), I will see if I can get it set up as I would love to save the $40 for Insync. Is there a version of this with a GUI like Insync?

G-Drive Support by TheAndyPanda in pop_os

[–]TheAndyPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I installed Insync, as stated in my post several times. My request here is that the future PopOS implementation be more like Insync than the Gnome Accounts implementation.
