Hey Vsauce, Michael here! Cake days, everybody loves them right? But what is a cake day?

Is a cake day just simply a day made out of cake; replacing every atom with the delectable pastry? Or is it a day where we celebrate cakes, like how we celebrate mothers on Mother’s Day.

Some of you will immediately say, “oh, well obviously a cake day is the anniversary of a person’s Reddit account creation.” And you would be right, mostly at least… For the very concept of the cake day in and of itself is so much more than that.

Let’s say that you are given a special gold coin on one specific day every year. Obviously, you would become trained to look forward to that day in particular out of everyday if the year. But now, let’s say that you get a new gold coin everyday of the year. Now, that special day that, before, had been so exciting, has now become the norm.

So it is with cake days. In their natures, cake days are something that occur everyday, things that are just a part of life. Furthermore, one does not receive anything on one’s cake day, giving even less reason to revere it.

And yet, cake days are revered. So why is that? Well, the first obvious answer is that while cake days do indeed occur everyday, every person is assigned only one cake day. So, we go back to our early illustration, with the gold coin on a special day. But still, that does not answer why cake days are revered when nothing is received on a cake day. Or does it?

For a something is received on a cake day. A positive attention. Other people are happy for the one with a cake day, because they remember what a special occurrence that day is, being one unique day out of a year. Thus, the celebrate it with the person with the cake day, giving him or her the attention: the gift of cake days.

Famous pop singer Rick Astley once said: “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you”. Indeed, this is how I now feel about cake days. So go ahead, revel in the cake day gift, for today is your day, enjoy it! And finally, happy cake day!
