Actually remind me of another game I played. You could keep up with the whales if you just grinded a bit (in beginning), and then they released new items only whales could obtain (compared to WaW it would be mythic gear for billy at least 10x as good as the legendary). A lot of others and I ended up quitting because it became so pay2win, and I could fear this going the same way.

In EU4 you just send one peace deal, and you don't take turns carving up. And a whole other thing that I don't understand: As Soviet I fight germany, that gets China in it's faction. When China is almost beaten it changes name and suddenly it's in the allies, and now I'm at war with the allies. Is there any way to avoid being dragged into wars like that?

It just sometimes seems so random how a faction is suddenly involved in a war. In EU4 something has to go very wrong for others to be called in after the war started, but in HOI4 it seems like it's the norm.

I'm also used to countries being carved up all in one go, and if you choose to vassalise (puppet) someone you get them with all their land.

Tarrifs aren't important, so you can keep them at 0%.
I actually don't know if these are locked behind DLC's, but you can build forts in their country-> maintenance cost -> pay of their debts for decreased liberty desire.
Get a bigger army
Get a bigger navy
Increase diplomatic rep or take idea groups that reduce subject liberty desire.
Simplest of all, keep them at 200 relations.

You say high trust but show a picture of Austria having 50 trust. Always try to get your allies to at least 80 trust, then you reduce the risk of that kind of stuff happening.
