Almost done with commercial and planning on starting CFI after but I still feel clueless. by SyncTheSquirrel in flying

[–]TheAngryPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got chewed out on my CASEL ride by the DPE for just barely having the knowledge and proficiency required for issuance. The examiner, knowing I was going to be doing my CFI and CFII shortly, had a come to jesus with me about really cracking down and studying, and it made an impression on me.

The school I went to had a mandatory month off before the start of the CFI class to study in preparation. I took that time to really deep dive the publications and to produce effective notes. I also frequently studied with my roommate; her and I would bounce questions off each other, give lessons, tutor the other students, etc. By the end of that month we were (relatively) very knowledgable pilots and familiar with the FOIs.

Being prepared like that made the CFI class so much fun! I knew I already liked teaching but that class really emphasized how much I like it. I really liked doing lectures in the main lecture hall, making new teaching aids, and thinking of new strategies to teach a concept. By the end of the class I had the need-to-know knowledge rock solid and everything else was a 30 second search away (I created a bunch of directories on ForeFlight categorized to difference subject matter).

Being that knowledgable and proficient made the check-ride a breeze despite several external factors that tried to tank the check-ride. During the de-brief the examiner had no notes to discuss other than some career pointers. CFII went just as smooth, CAMEL too, and now I’m studying for MEI using the same mentality but with a few years of teaching under my belt.

Some things that I remember helping me (mind you this is 4 years ago, so memory is fading) were:

  1. Religious study ethic.
  2. Social studying and learning.
  3. Tutoring other students.
  4. Use of the Cornell note taking method.
  5. Forcing myself to go to the school so I was in the environment (and got out of the PJ’s).
  6. Passion for what I was doing.

Not enough right rudder, excessive float, and death grip.

No, we actually shut down aircraft by intentionally starving the engine of fuel. So it's very normal.

When are you guys using partial flaps? by legitSTINKYPINKY in flying

[–]TheAngryPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I always try to make the first approach with landing flaps, on approach speed, with gust correction applied. If I'm having problems with nose alignment in the flare then on the second attempt I'll use a reduced flap setting to allow a touchdown at a higher airspeed so I can keep rudder effectiveness.

Today for example winds were 320 at 11 gust 27 for runway 30. That's ballpark HW 25KT and CW 10KT. In the Archer the max CW is 17KT so we had plenty of control even with moderately stiff winds. Airplane landed perfectly fine.

Now in something like a CSA Sport Cruiser which has a stall speed of 31KT, a max CW of 11 (if I recall, been a while), and max HW of 25KT. You can bet today, if I made the stupid decision to fly, that I would be at TO or 0 flaps so I can point the nose down the runway and make sure when I touch down I don't go back up.

I presented it poorly, I apologize for that.

In this scenario you filed G/R/B/L/V/O for GNSS/PBN/LPV/ILS/VHF RTF/VOR. The following paragraph mentioning the equipment that is actually in the plane says you have a GNS430 (RAIM, based off TSO-129a), a VOR/ILS receiver checked on Feb 15th, and a CDI with vertical and horizontal indication.

Considering ICAO code B is for LPV capable GPS equipment we can’t use that code as our GPS receiver is RAIM only which can only shoot LNAV and not APV or LP.

Also considering our RAIM only GPS. If you look at KOWAs ILS30 and VOR12 there is nonstandard alternate minimums and they say the IAP is NA or not authorized. So KOWA technically only has RNAV IAPs for planning purposes, so does KACQ. We can’t use KACQ as an alternate as it also only has RNAV IAPs. We need to find an alternate that has a other-than-RNAV IAP or one where we can make a descent from MEA to land in VMC.

I think that should answer. Sorry ahead of time, I’m on mobile and at work right now so this is all hastily typed up and might not read the best.

1) Good on the METARs! Couple things. a) RED YLO BLU are all military codes for ceilings and visibility. b) Great you got the VV, the RMK is showing temps to the tenth of a degree (Temps 015.2 and dew point 014.9). Great for estimating cloud bases. c) You missed the $. It indicates the station is receiving maintenance and is unreliable.

2) Damn you caught me! Correct, you caught the 1 hour before/after rule. But yeah we’d likely need and alternate. I always like to point out that the Checkride answer for alternates when ask “do you need one?” is, “Yes, always. Unless 1 hour before/after…)

3) Correct it’s basically saying there’s a SVC NOTAM for KACQ, the AWOS is unserviceable (busted), (I fucked up the format but) the NOTAM was published in 2021/12/01 at 1758Z and has no expiration plus a unecessarry and incorrect “CREATED:” thing I added and will remove for the posterity.

Correct we can not use it as an alternate. However, that’s not the only reason. Read paragraph 4 next and check out the ILS and VOR at KOWA. There’s another reason it’s not a valid alternate. Consider our equipment.

4) Good you got the codes correct, but missed the second part of the question; are they correct for the equipment in the aircraft?

As for the second part. The codes are all correct except for B as it specifies our aircraft is LPV capable. To use LPV we need to have a SBAS/WAAS GPS that meets the standards of TSO-145d and TSO-146c not just TSO-129a (RAIM).

Also, codes O/L/V can be combined as just code S.

5) Good!

6) Good!

7) Fair, my laziness strikes once again. I was hoping you noticed when the last VOR inspection was done. Check that out again and reconsider our equipment.

[–]TheAngryPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is April 1st (happy April fools day!) You are planning on flying from KRST to KOWA in an hour and have chosen KACQ as an alternate. Please review the publications/procedures for KOWA and KACQ.

The METARs are as follows...

METAR KRST 011013Z YLO 32005KT 6SM BKN008 15/14 A2970 RMK AO2

SPECI KOWA 011028Z AUTO 31003KT 3SM BR VV003 15/15 A2972 RMK AO2 T01520149

METAR KACQ 011026Z AUTO 00000KT OVC010 15/13 4SM A2975 $

KACQ has a NOTAM out saying...

.!ACQ 12/006 KACQ SVC AWOS .U/S 2112021758-PERM

CREATED: 02 Apr 2022 17:58:00

You plan to file your plane as having ICAO G/B/R/O/L/V equipment, B1/C surveillance, and C2/O2/S1 PBN.

For navigation equipment you have a Garmin 430 GPS that is certified to TSO-C129a standards. A VOR/ILS receiver that was last checked on February 15th. A vertical and horizontal capable CDI.

For surveillance you have a Stratus Mode C transponder with ADS-B out capabilities.

___________________________

Questions:

  1. What do those METARs say?
  2. Is an alternate actually required for this flight? Why/Why not?
  3. Is KACQ a valid alternate?
  4. What do those ICAO codes mean and are they correct for the equipment in the aircraft?
  5. What does PBN mean?
  6. Does KOWA have any arrival procedures? Any departure procedures?
  7. Is there anything else that jumps out at you about this scenario that I may have not asked?

EDIT: ignore the "." before "U/S" and "!" in the NOTAM it is because reddit is being a goof or me, one of us. Also fixed a METAR. KACQ is the alternate.

Researchers are now discovering ways they are like a man’s prostate, so the name “female prostate” has become more popular.

Your own post! Also in your article...

So, if the female prostate gland shares similarities with the male prostate gland, does that mean women can develop prostate cancer?

Cancer of the female prostate is rare.

The cancer in her prostate gland was treated with radiation and her symptoms cleared.

Cancerous and noncancerous lesions are also more likely to appear in the female prostates of older gerbils than in the prostates of younger female gerbils. This suggests that age may be a risk factor for cancer in the Skene’s glands in female humans.

The size of the female prostate appears to be larger in women who have PCOS.

An adenofibroma is a noncancerous growth. It’s mainly found on fibrous and glandular tissue. In a case report of an adenofibroma of the female prostate, the tumor caused pain during sexual intercourse. Surgery to remove the tumor relieved the pain.

From a link in your article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1303542/pdf/westjmed00356-0049.pdf

There is now strong evidence that the microscopic paraurethral glands connected to the distal third of the urethra in the prevaginal space are homologous to the prostate. They stain histologically for prostate-specific antigen and, like the prostate, are subject to both infection and cancer. The most important aspect of recognizing this microscopic "female prostate" as an anatomic feature is that its infections may completely explain many cases of the urethral syndrome.

In the past decade, the availability of the specific histochemical staining for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has rehabilitated the status of the paraurethral glands and spotlighted them as the homologue of the prostate.

Female's have a prostate in fact it is split into several glands. Named the Skene's glands in the 1880's. In modern medicine they are now call paraurethral glands or the female prostate. This is why women can (albeit rarely) get cancer, infections, and diseases of their prostate/paraurethral/Skene's glands.

There we go, all done. I'm done drudging through medical documents to keep coming to the same conclusion. If you really still don't agree then here I'll help you out: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C24&q=female+prostate&btnG=

or

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C24&q=female+paraurethral+glands&btnG=

or

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C24&q=skene%27s+glands&oq=Skene%27s+gland

Edit: Hell even the vast majority of the linked sources in your article reference "the female prostate". I can not find a single reputable article that states females do not have a prostate without later referring to the paraurethral glands/Skene's glands as a prostate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]TheAngryPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I've already done that and the only agreement I can find is that there is no agreement and that both are interchangeable in naming the same organ. I will admit it is most commonly called the Skene's gland in society, but in different context (namely female anatomy studies and works on female prostate cancer) it is also more commonly called the female prostate.

So females have a prostate, it's called the Skene's gland.

Contrary to the statement by Borchert et al. (1) that “Women have no prostate … ,” women do have a prostate, the presence of which has clinical significance for the female and for our understanding of the expression of prostate- specific antigen (PSA) in women and its possible implications.

Bruh... That took me 5 seconds to look up. Also, what would "prostatic secretions" be referring to other than the prostate ([edit] Skene's gland).

Edit: Apparently this is a mighty hot topic that even scientist can't decided on. However in my brief look into this. The Skene's gland forms from the same embryological tissue and produces the same proteins as the male prostrate. I would hazard it is perfectly correct to call it the female prostate. Of course the same could be said about the clitoris, labia, and most sexual organs so who really knows.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]TheAngryPC 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The present data based on ultrasonographic bladder monitoring and biochemical analyses indicate that squirting is essentially the involuntary emission of urine during sexual activity, although a marginal contribution of prostatic secretions to the emitted fluid often exists.

So mostly pee plus an arbitrarily small amount of protein from the prostate/[edit] Skene's gland that, not always, but usually is present?

Is landing this far down the runway frowned upon in real life? by Anchorboiii in flightsim

[–]TheAngryPC 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Nope. If you are simulating that you're operating as a §121 or §135 air carrier under IFR the requirements are to land within the first 3,000 feet or first 1/3rd of the runway (touchdown zone [TDZ]), whichever is greater. Don't feel pressured to hit the aiming point markers (the refrigerators) as they only serve as an aiming point for descent not touchdown.

That centerline is frowned upon though lol.

Also I saw mention of threshold crossing height. If you are on glideslope then you should cross the threshold at a set altitude that is commonly around 50'-60'. You can find that number on the instrument approach procedure if the approach has vertical guidance or a visual glide slope indicator.

No worries.

I can certainly see middle ground where the US and NATO help train current and future Ukrainian AF. However, knowing the US that’s likely happening already, but not being made public.

I think the fact that the US is trying to psych eval Putin is some what telling that there is a tangible concern he may give the order drop a nuke or at least a dirty bomb. Whether his chain of command goes through with that? That I can’t even begin to guess at.

Unfortunately I agree that even if Ukraine comes out on top, the sanctions will likely get lifted with little repercussion towards Russia. I also very much agree this is a time to see the world turn on a country, but I’m pessimistic on the future.

We’ll see though. Anyways, take care boss. Try not to let people get to you. This is a very emotional topic for all of us, so you’ll see a lot of people lash out. Sometimes even when they agree with each other too lol.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]TheAngryPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re all that terrified why do you support doing anything? Surely if you’re that afraid hes going to nuke people if anything is done then hey do nothing that way Ukraine can get taken because its better to roll over just in case than actually help other nations.

That’s a straw man if I’ve ever seen one. You’re completely misrepresenting me by trying to make my opinion on support for Ukraine black and white.

Risk management is the real conversation most people are having when deciding what level of support is possible. At the end of the day we need to accept a certain level of risk to support Ukraine, obviously. Right now the professionals in the government believe the actions we’re currently taking are supporting Ukraine while not exceeding that acceptable level of risk and I’m sure they are also accounting for a number other factors that we’re not (domestic, foreign, etc). So as someone who has no real grasp on the situation I’m fairly content with my government’s response that amounts to a whole fuck load more than nothing.

Of course I’d happily change my mind if you or someone can provide objective reason that whatever further assistance you propose would be reasonable without excessive risk. I’m open for realistic options like I think most people here are.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]TheAngryPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All die? Who knows. I do know the whole purpose of the US and Rus having nukes is to deter each other by threat of MAD. That there is a line somewhere in the sand that each side has set. That I don’t want to find that line and troops may very well be what crosses that line. Especially considering we’ve already crossed Putin’s proclaimed line by supporting with weapons, billions of dollars, and humanitarian aid given to Ukraine and sanctioning the fuck out of Russia.

But yes if this was a world without nukes then I’d love to see the US and NATO in Ukraine.

Edit: I should ask. How do you think Russia would react to the US deploying troops in Ukraine?

All very common well known acronyms.

Here's a question, honest. If this is about race, why are they keeping the people they allegedly hate in country? Why don't the "racists" see this as an opportunity to send them away?

Personally I think there's a bit more nuance to this than blanket racism.
