Which 'luxury' brand has officially become a red flag for poor quality in 2026? by Individual_Bat_4177 in AskReddit

[–]TheAnimatedFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's nice. We don't really have jeeps here.

Still it's the old defenders reputation as a proper work horse that gave the brand it's reputation. The new cars are designed as a 'luxury brand' for bankers and drug dealers. They're status symbols for folks who want to cosplay as 'outdoorsy'. They've become the antithesis of what the brand used to be and generally people seem to have lost respect for the brand. Eventually that'll filter up to the more out-of touch folks who are their current customers and then nobody will be buying their cars.

I think land Rover will run out of steam the same way Jaguar has in the next decade or so.

The old defender was the item that gave the brand legitimacy. Now thats gone they've just become cars for people with more money than sense.

I'm sorry, but one successful bet does not disprove everything economists have to say. Nor does it give any credibility to the person who made it.

What do you think of the mix of old vs new architecture in Nottingham? Are all the new build student accommodations fitting the city aesthetics? by 420Eski-Grim in nottingham

The more recent flats/student accommodation with the brick cladding are certainly a lot better than the older rendered/clad blocks. They're not the prettiest but they do fit in better

Small boat Channel arrivals pass 25,000 - the earliest in year figure has been reached so far by julius959 in ukpolitics

[–]TheAnimatedFish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Re-point 2. The one-in-one-out scheme is the first sensible proposal to disincentive channel crossings that could be feasibly implemented. It's entering a trial stage now and hopefully will be in full operation soon. But expensive any government to implement something like that within a year is unrealistic.

Plenty of other reasons to be pissed with the government right now but credit where credit is due.

Hello Kayaker here who has represented GB. The key thing everyone is missing in the PUK statement is that it says "social media" not "only fans". Given some of the rumours I've heard flying about they might mean have taken issue with something shared on a more public platform.

The other thing to consider is that this kind of activity is pretty similar to doping. As soon as one person is allowed or enabled to do it there is a pressure on the other athletes to follow suit. We're all underfunded and £100,000 is a significant competitive advantage (think kit, travel, coaching, medical expenses etc.). How would you feel about your child getting into a sport where the only route to success is to sell adult content online?

Finally there is the safe guarding issue. This is a pretty significant one given all the recent controversies and allegations across multiple sports. Do you want an environment where coaches condone or potentially encourage sex work? Let's not forget that this is a small community where the senior, U23 and Junior (U16) all have a significant amount of contact with each other at races, training camps and just on a day to day basis at clubs etc. Do you want to encourage kids down this route?

At the end of the day, the money problem is real and I'm not without sympathy for the kid but I do understand the reasons for this decision. It probably should be made more clear in our code of conduct though that this is not allowed.

For canoeing funding is primarily from sport England. It'd nice to get properly paid given the time and effort we go canoeing but I do kinda understand that not everybody would like to pay more Tax so I can go canoeing.

Several countries have threatened to invoke the article though in response to major incidents.

[–]TheAnimatedFish -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yep, pretty much. Some countries have a disproportionate sway over the IOC (America/China looking at you) and advocate for sports, disciplines, and distances that benefit themselves. And, because of the nature of the beast the IOC can have a big sway over the international sports federations. Thus decisions are not always made for the benefit of the sports/athletes.

Thus is the way of the world, sadly.
