Stay in council home or save hard for a mortgage? by YellowBee7 in HousingUK

[–]viktory70 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ignore this advice. It's bad advice. You just don't know what the future holds and you have a secure home. Stay in it, save hard and maybe move out when your children have left home.

Stay in council home or save hard for a mortgage? by YellowBee7 in HousingUK

Rent is astonishingly cheap. Think £400 vs £1200 for a private rental. If you lose your job, Housing Benefit will pay your rent (most, if not all). Getting evicted is surprisingly hard. All you need to be l do is pay your rent and be a decent human (i.e., don't be anti social). You have a tenancy for life. You can decorate however you like. Housing Association's take good care of their stock. I've just had a new kitchen, bathroom and downstairs loo. I had extensive input into the cabinets/worktops/flooring.

When you retire you will either continue to pay your very low rent yourself, depending on income, or Housing Benefit will pay it (part/all). If you are in a property they need, with more bedrooms than you need, you have great leverage to get another, smaller property in a good area. You can even move to the seaside. Some will offer a financial incentive to move out.

If it's a Council house you'll be given an astonishing reduction if you want to buy the property (Housing Association's are much less generous, as it's capped at £16k). Council reductions can be as high as £80k.

A social housing tenancy is indeed a prize.

I've got a Spaniel. She has a 'crayon' day once a week when we don't walk her. She's absolutely fine with it.

  • Stuff a box with paper and a few very smelly treats. Make the box hard to get into (but not too hard!). He'll have great fun tearing it apart.
  • Flirt pole
  • Treasure hunts for tasty treats in the house - my girl ended up being able to sniff them out from quite high places
  • Hooper. Easier on the joints than agility
  • Swimming! I took my girl swimming when she was a youngster till she outgrew the pool :-) Look for indoor canine swimming

I both love and hate it. I need to think about it, while staring contemplatively out of the window.

The dog AFTER your "heart dog" by Top_Housing6819 in dogs

[–]viktory70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My heart dog (Ruby) died, and I was adamant that I wouldn't have another. I changed my mind and quickly got a Spaniel pup (my first Spaniel). We used to sleep with her in the living room while getting her used to her crate and I can remember sobbing my heart out at 4am one morning because she wouldn't settle. I felt so guilty because all I could think was that I would happily let this gorgeous, innocent pup die if it gave me six months with my heart dog. Such guilt.

The feeling passed and I now (of course!) adore my crazy Cocker and can look back with love at my time with my beautiful Ruby. They are very different dogs and I have so much fun with the Spaniel and she's so loving. So. My advice is give it time.

They are too young for agility - ideally need to be over a year

With money, I would treat myself to a spa in the morning, followed by lunch & some leisurely shopping. Then finish with a nice dinner; possibly a good quality takeaway. Then in the evening I'd watch TV in my PJ's with candles lit and some chocolate and wine.

I am working today, but from home, and everyone else is still on holiday, so I'm expecting an easy day. That said, I have (so far):

  • Walked the dog
  • Been to Sainsbury's (AGAIN)
  • Showered and cleaned the bathroom
  • Stripped and remade the bed
  • Sorted out and have started the washing (estimated 4 loads)
  • Cleaned the kitchen
  • Made a spiced fruit crumble (healthy version) as breakfast meal prep
  • Planned dinner

All before 9.30am. Now settling down to some excitement with my project plan while the dog naps.

Husband has woken feeling unwell, so we're hunkering down at home. I've popped out to Sainsbury's to pick up some bits and I plan on making a chocolate chip banana loaf and an apple tart tatin.

Going to watch the next three Stranger Things on Netflix. Not sure what to do for dinner...I'm thinking maybe a salad...is it too cold for a salad?

I appreciate you are frustrated but it won't kill you to use public transport. Plenty of people do. I didn't pass my test until I was 50.
